CSU IMPACTED UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS

AND CAMPUSES FOR 2017-2018

ACADEMIC PROGRAM IMPACTION--For 2017-18, all undergraduate programs, pre-

programs, and undeclared/undecided programs are impacted for the following campuses:

CSU Fullerton, CSU Long Beach, San Diego State University, San Jose State University,

and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

To search for a specific program at a CSU campus, scroll down to the online impaction

database search after entering the campus name.

CAMPUS IMPACTION or LEVEL IMPACTION means that a campus has reached its

enrollment capacity in terms of instructional resources and physical support and cannot

accommodate all the eligible undergraduate applications it receives during the initial filing

period. In these instances, the campus has established a local admission area for first-time

freshmen and/or upper-division transfer students.

In general, applications received from students from outside the designated local area

would be held to higher admission requirements than those received from students inside

the local area. Check your college for impaction

Private & Out of State Public and Private Colleges

Apply through The Common Application

o Open NOW for the 2017-2018 admissions season

o Over 500 colleges and universities – including Yale, Cornell, Duke and

Dartmouth – are members of the Common Application, a non-profit

organization that allows students to complete a single application for

multiple schools

Note: many common application schools also ask applicants to

complete supplemental forms

Visit https://app.commonapp.org/ for a list of member institutions

If the private college or out-of-state public college is not listed under

the common application program, you must directly contact the

admissions office to obtain an application.

If applying to a private college, you should complete a CSS/Financial Aid Profile

at http://student.collegeboard.org/css-financial-aid-profile

o You must check with each private college to see when to submit the CSS

form

Note: some schools request the CSS/Financial Aid Profile as soon as

October

This will allow potential schools to look at your finances and decide

how much financial aid to give you

The application registration fee is about $25 (fee may

change). However, with the CSS profile, you will have to pay an

additional fee of about $16 (fee may change) for each additional

school to which you want your application sent, while the FAFSA is

free of charge

See your counselor for possible fee waivers

You will have to check with these institutions to see if they require the SAT I,

ACT, and/or SAT Subject Tests. Many schools will now accept any of

these. Specific test information is also available in our guidance offices.

15

Financial AID 101 FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that can be prepared

annually by current and prospective college students (undergraduate and graduate) in the

United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid.

You can complete, submit and track your application online. This is the easiest way to

apply for federal aid. The online program even checks your data before it is transmitted to

the processing center, so there's less chance of making an error.

FAFSA PRE-APPLICATION CHECKLIST FOR YOU AND YOUR PARENT

Please have these documents ready when applying for the FAFSA

Your Social Security Number

Your Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)

Your parent’s most recent federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of

money earned. (Note: You may be able to transfer your parent’s federal tax return

information into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.)

Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)

Records of untaxed income (if applicable)

An FSA ID to sign electronically.

Grants and Scholarships Defined

The terms “scholarship” and “grant” are often used interchangeably, but there are

usually differences between these two forms of aid.

Most scholarships are merit based. This means that they are awarded to students

with certain qualities, such as proven academic or athletic ability. Many scholarships

have rules — maintaining a certain GPA, for example — that you have to follow to

continue receiving aid.

Most grants are need based. This means that they are usually awarded based on your

or your family’s financial situation.

To apply for grants and scholarships, you’ll most likely have to fill out financial aid forms

such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS/Financial Aid

PROFILE®. Outside scholarships usually have their own application forms and application

processes.

The FAFSA is available online at FAFSA on the Web. If you need a paper copy, you can

download a PDF at www.studentaid.ed.gov/PDFfafsa or call 800-4-FED-AID (433-3243).

FINANCIAL AID 101

Must complete the FAFSA or Dream Application to be eligible for a CAL GRANT.

CAL GRANT

Is a financial aid program administrated by the California Student Aid Commission

(CSAC) providing aid to California undergraduates, vocational training students, and those

in teacher certification programs.

Cal Grants are the largest source of California state funded student financial aid.

Cal Grant is a State Grant for use in undergraduate studies, vocational programs, and

teacher credential programs for use at Cal Grant Eligible Institutions only.

To qualify, you must meet the eligibility and financial requirements as well as any

minimum GPA requirements. Cal Grants can be used at any University of California,

California State University or California Community College, as well as qualifying

independent and career colleges or technical schools in California.

DREAM ACT

The CA Dream Act Application (CADAA) is used by undocumented students who

meet the eligibility requirements of AB 540. The application can be found at

www.caldreamact.org. The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) processes the

application and any aid received can only be used at eligible California public or private

institutions. They may be eligible for federal student aid as well as California student aid.

The Cal Grant application deadline for students using the CADAA or the FAFSA is March

2 prior to the academic year. For Cal Grants offered under the California Dream Act, you

must also submit a certified GPA to CSAC. Undocumented students are given privacy

rights and all information obtained in applying for financial aid, will be kept confidential

and used solely for the purpose of obtaining financial aid for college.
