LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. Luke 10: 25

While teaching about the way we should lead our lives, Jesus shares with the crowd the parable of the Good Samaritan, challenging those around him to expand their view of the world, and embrace their responsibility for the care of others. Jesus promotes a vision of the world where everyone is treated with compassion, and no one is forsaken.

When reviewing the past year, and considering the graces bestowed upon Arrupe Jesuit, I am drawn to the Gospel. My reflections on the success of our school, and the accomplishments of our students always reveal the same truth: Arrupe Jesuit High School thrives because so many of you respond as the Good Samaritan responded. You choose to embrace our students and families because the mission of Arrupe calls each of us to work as a community.

Prior to the arrival of COVID-19, Arrupe Jesuit was in the midst of a wonderful year. With your help, our students were fully employed through the Work Study program and we celebrated a brilliant Magis Night. COVID-19 introduced many new challenges to our community, including distance-learning and a cessation of CWSP for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. Despite those challenges, we graduated 100 Seniors in July at our first ever Drive-In ceremony, an occasion we hope never to repeat!

You will read in the stories that follow an account of students who love their school, and are determined to make the most of the opportunities available to them. I pray that you will also see yourselves, working in partnership with our students as faithful neighbors. With gratitude,

Michael J. O’Hagan

Sooper Credit Union has partnered with Arrupe Jesuit

since the 2013-2014 school year, starting with four

students and increasing to seven over the years.

Students work in a variety of areas: four students work

as bi-lingual bank tellers, one student in marketing, one

in accounting and another student in IT. Students in

accounting use software programs such as Alogent, CU

Prodigy, and Excel/Word to provide operational support

to their departments while the student in marketing

assists with customer mailings as well as social media.

In IT, students troubleshoot, work on graphics, help with

computer assembly, and respond to service desk tickets.

Thank you for your partnership in career readiness,

Sooper Credit Union!

“We love Jimena! Jimena is a quick learner who is

always happy to help. She has been particularly useful

helping us manage our social media channels and

marketing inventory. She really does a fantastic job.”

“Ericka has been wonderful to work with and willing to

take on any task. Her help allows us to work on other

aspects of our jobs.”

“Carlos has really matured and flourished in his role as

a teller. When he started he was shy and reserved. He is

the most ambitious student we have had – he asks for

additional training – training that isn’t required of our

Arrupe Students – because he wants to learn more; he

takes on the “scary” tasks and is not afraid to take on a

new challenge.”

“We firmly believe that every child deserves access to a quality education and that education can be the key to launching families out of a vicious cycle of poverty. Arrupe Jesuit High School not only provides students with a college preparatory education, but also an opportunity to gain valuable life skills in the workforce propelling students’ success far beyond a traditional education. AJHS students are impressive - committed, caring, hardworking young men and women - and the nurturing environment of the AJHS community is inspirational. We have seen the positive impact our donation makes on the lives of many first hand and feel honored to support AJHS students and families!”

“Graduating from Arrupe Jesuit in

2011 I never saw myself as a teacher

or even returning to work here. I did

the Alum Service Corp (ASC) after

graduating from Regis University

with a double major in Spanish and

Sociology with a minor in Criminology.

I always thought I would end up

becoming a Social Worker, but when

I was placed at Regis Jesuit High

School as a Spanish teacher I loved

it! I loved sharing my culture with

the students and educating them on

it. When Arrupe Jesuit offered me a

job it was a different experience; an opportunity that I felt called to accept...

educating our students not only on THEIR language but THEIR culture and

history as well.

Many of our students, including myself, don’t get educated on our history or

culture in the U.S. I wanted to provide that for our students at Arrupe Jesuit.

It’s important for the identity of our students and our institution as well. I have

the advantage of building unique relationships with our students because I

am an AJ alum, Mexican-American, and bilingual. I have the tools to connect

with my students through language, culture, religion, traditions, and high

school years. I enjoy reminding them that I started exactly where they are and

anything is possible if we work hard for it! I feel myself as one of them and

always encourage them to fight for their future and values because no one

will understand us like our own community. That’s why I am at Arrupe Jesuit: I

want to be their support because I am one of the few people at our school that

have been where they are right now.

It is obvious that I am at Arrupe Jesuit for our students, but another of my

passions is our parents and families. I was a first generation graduate and

I remember how lost my parents were when I was in high school and the

transition to college. I work with our parents and support them because

sometimes they don’t know how to be a part of their child’s education. They

are always so grateful and loving that it makes me enjoy work so much more.

Arrupe Jesuit is an environment where everyone feels safe and at home. I

wouldn’t want it any other way for myself nor our students and our families.”

“I first met Arrupe students through the Corporate Work Study Program while I was the Director of The Conflict Center in Denver. I was so impressed with their professionalism and the overall caliber of the Arrupe program, mission, and

philosophy that I wanted to give back to the school. Additionally, my wife, Mary, met students from the program while she was volunteering at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and she was also highly impressed. For several years we gave an annual gift on Colorado Gives Day, but decided we could afford to give more if we budgeted a monthly donation. We have an automatic gift sent to Arrupe each month and we are proud to help these fabulous young people develop workplace skills while obtaining a prestigious Jesuit education.”

“I wanted to take this time to let you know how grateful I am for the opportunity to work with you! It felt great that you guys trusted me enough to begin working with you this past summer! I’ve learned the skills necessary to remain confident when I’m confused and I learned new time management skills. I still remember the time I mistook the historic site with a zip line, Patricia was joking with me the rest of that day.” — Roberto, Senior, to the staff at US Forest Service

In March of 2020, Arrupe Jesuit had to quickly adapt to the

new realities of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students completed

the end of the school year remotely, and CWSP participation

was suspended. Despite these changes, students remained

engaged and experienced a deeper level of gratitude for their

teachers and supervisors.

“I can’t help but think about all the wonderful staff working at the clinic while the pandemic is happening. At the moment things are very hard and I would like to thank you all for taking the time to care for others. Know that my family and I are constantly praying for all of you and your families. I miss being at the clinic and being able to help out. I really appreciate having had the time to learn how a clinic runs, and see the many different procedures and appointments. I am especially grateful for the funny moments that have happened; the laughs shared have been my favorite part of it all.” — Roxana, Senior, to the staff of Bella Natural Women’s Care

“I want to let you all know that I’m truly thankful for choosing me to work with you and for the company. I’ve learned so much from all of you. You have all taught me how to be confident in my work and if I was stuck on something, it was okay to ask. I have always been a shy kid growing up, until I met all of you. Mistakes are a part of life and its okay to make mistakes in work and in school, and you have all shown me how to learn from those mistakes and how to be better.” — Angel, Freshman, to the staff at CO DNR-State Land Board

Class of 2010 graduate, Fred Herrera, was the first in his

family to complete high school and to earn a college

degree. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Business

Administration and Corporate Finance from Colorado

State University in 2014 and has gone on to launch his

career in finance and technology. In 2020, Fred returned

to serve Arrupe Jesuit as a member of our CWSP Board

of Trustees.

“After graduating from Colorado State University in the Fall

of 2014, I decided to take a six-week backpacking trip to

Europe and return to Bilbao, Spain where I studied abroad

the year before. Coincidentally, Bilbao is the birthplace of

Pedro Arrupe and I had the amazing experience to visit a

few monuments dedicated to his life’s work.

Upon returning from my trip, I spent the early years of my

career in Financial Planning, Catastrophic Insurance, and

most recently, the Technology Sector. In my current role,

I help advise my clients to find efficiencies within their

network infrastructure and assist in transforming their

business to best suit their end customer’s needs.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to be named to the

Board of Trustees for the Corporate Work Study Program

at Arrupe. It is an honor to serve as an Alumni and provide

insight on how our current and future students are being

prepared for the changing workforce. I am grateful to

continue to be part of Arrupe Jesuit and give back to the

family that gave so much to me.”

Though things look different this year at Arrupe Jesuit, the formation of

young men and women remains at the heart of what we do. This year will

continue to challenge all of us, but the adaptability and resilience of our

students and staff combined with generous support from our community

will ensure the sustainability of our school and the promise of our mission.

Our vision for 2021 is full of promise. We look forward to celebrating with

you at Magis Night 2021: Back to School, our first-ever hybrid gala. We look

forward to mobilizing the strategic plan and welcoming new Trustees to

our Board. We look forward to launching another class of graduates into

the world. 2021 will be a year of sustaining what we have built, recovering

from the challenges of 2020, and progressing in key areas of CWSP, Faith

Formation, Philanthropy, and excellence in Academics. Your support of

Arrupe Jesuit High School is critical to our full recovery from COVID-19, and

we are so grateful for your unwavering commitment.
