THE CHALLENGES OF GENERATION „Y”

• Description of generation „Y” is defined by sociologists. Contrary to the former (baby boom and „X” generations) people born in the 80-s are continually exposed to multiple stimuli, grown up in a consumption-focused world, while all previously agreed social rules are fully challenged and questioned around.

• They are aware that keeping up their success requires daily efforts. Through their stamina, their very pragmatic and technocratic approach, through the efficient and innovative use of the very sophisticated systems available and utilising their enchanced skill of multiple attention a lot of them became managers soon.

• They show and promote new values, while sometimes neglecting the importance of emotional intelligence (social and motivation) skills. They are able to achieve exceptional professional successes, while also want to be sustainably inspiring leaders for long period of time.

CHALLANGES OF THE MIDDLES• Being promoted to mid-management position is a dream of everyone –

until they are promoted indeed.• This level of management requires multiple challenges, there is a high

pressure from different directions. The direct reports do not always do what they should in fact do; it is hard to maintain the human relationships with the ones who should be pushed to perform; while the top managers expect from the middles something different what they would themself consider important.

• However great performance they could show before, their promotion requires new ways of working and new skills. To escape the trap of micro-management they have to delegate and control with efficiency, defining the right priorities, utilising the available material and human resuorces in an effective way, while sometimes suffering from the limited information flow.

• Middle managers are the ones to conwey even negative information towards their team and act with credibility, but they can feel lonely and alone when it happens they make wrong decisions.
