Artwork needs to be “married” to the furniture below
Most artwork is too high!
This art looks like it is lost, or floating
The old “eye level” ruleis not very useful—
instead make sure that art looks connected to something
![Page 3: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Use the rule of “Goldilocks”—not too high and not to much
Too high Just right
![Page 4: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
This picture is next to a fireplace, but it looks great just above the bench, instead of higher…
![Page 5: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Groupings of art work should have common lines or themes. This grouping is lined up at the bottom.
![Page 6: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
![Page 7: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
This grouping is lined up at the center line
![Page 8: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Art can look like it is resting on a common line. In this case, it really is.
![Page 9: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
![Page 10: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Artwork side by side, or stacked vertically, gives a sense of order, and can unify a grouping
![Page 11: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
![Page 12: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
![Page 13: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Art items can be placed in a shape, such as a rectangle, a line, a square or an “L” shape, to unite the group
![Page 14: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
![Page 15: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
This art grouping forms a spiral shape. For complex groupings, lay out the art on a big piece of paper on the floor, marking all the placements. Tape the paper on the wall, hammer the nails through the paper, peel off the paper, and hang the art.
![Page 16: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
How do you know what size art work to use?
Most people tend to use art that is too small
Be brave about the size of art or mirrors
![Page 17: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)

Smaller art work can look larger with large frames or wide matting
Smaller works can be grouped
Using a dramatic hanging device can add to the apparent size
![Page 25: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)

Similar frames
• Art in different sizes and shapes can be unified by coordinated frames
• And if the works are similar (such as all black and white photos, etc,)
![Page 31: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
![Page 32: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
![Page 33: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
To unify different photo sizes,
frames (all one size)
have been used with
different custom mats
![Page 34: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
•These are all photos
•They are in different size frames
•The frames are different shapes
•They are unified by one frame color
•And matching mats
![Page 35: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
•Same story here, but with all black and white photos
![Page 36: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Changing frames
Three different frames
Same artwork
Three different effects
Which do you prefer?
![Page 37: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
The frames are in many shapes
The frames are even different colors
What do the frames have in common?
What does the art have in common?
What about the background?
![Page 38: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
If the art is kind of busy, use a simple background
![Page 39: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Frames
The choice of frame is very important
They don’t have to be expensive, but they need to fit the artwork
Even a Matisse looks ridiculous in a bad frame or the wrong frame!
![Page 40: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
![Page 41: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
![Page 42: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
![Page 43: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
The frame of the art is not a “property line”
Use your best judgment…
Art and accessories can overlap!
![Page 44: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
![Page 45: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
![Page 46: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
![Page 47: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
Overlapping and grouping help the small size of these similar items to work better
The texture of the wall helps as well
![Page 48: Art & Accessories Part 1](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042613/54bc30c54a79592a738b45e7/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
•This is great, even if we added tall flowers.

A sign collector has grouped the sign collection in the library
This keeps the rest of the house from looking like a flea market
It gives more impact to the collection
The signs can be enjoyed all at one time

Lots of artwork, or busy artwork, requires simpler furnishings, simpler backgrounds
