The council’s brief was for a
sculpture to celebrate the life
and achievements of Nobel
Prize Winner Dr Francis Crick,
co-discoverer of the ‘double
helix’ structure of DNA. The
sculpture needed to engage and
inspire townspeople and visitors
of all ages and create an identity
for Abingdon Street, one of
Northampton’s main shopping
streets.
Discovery is a sculpture in two
parts referencing the double
helix structure. The figures are
depicted in bold, abandoned
postures conveying a sense of
optimism and passion, and the
sheer daring of Crick’s work.

Andre Wallace’s brief was
to create a sculpture to
reflect the scale and
personality of Moreton
Street and the type of
people living nearby. The
larger-than-life sculpture,
which marks the entrance to
Moreton Street from
Vauxhall Bridge Road, is a
playful piece depicting a girl
on roller skates. It is cast in
bronze resin due not only to
budgetary considerations
but also to achieve the
necessary durability to
withstand traffic pollution.
Testimonials
Martin Reeves Group Creative Director at Maris Interiors LLP I've known and worked with Catherine for a few years now, and each time I ask for her help and consultancy with clients , I am always not only impressed, but I have become used to looking forward to seeing her contribution and proposal. Sarah Asghar Executive Assistant at Edison Investment Research Catherine is a knowledgeable, personable professional who strives to ensure that the client is happy. She has incredible attention to detail and truly understands the needs of her clients. Fantastic to work with. Tara Kleiner EA to CFO & Main counsel/support to Legal Director I engaged Catherine to assist me in obtaining an artwork that was to be framed and featured in one of the new Executive Offices. I found Catherine to be very informative, pleasant and accommodating in each step of the process to which she personally delivered the final product. I would also like to give my appreciation to Catherine for arranging the artist statement that she went out of her way to arrange, this was certainly a wonderful idea that was very well received by the Executive - so, thank you Catherine, and for a very easy and pleasant experience! Jan Portch Office Manager at Land Securities Group PLC Catherine is a joy to have on board - always creative and reliable, never pushing her ideas on you but always able to rationalise them perfectly. Inevitably they work! Has great attention to detail and a sound understanding of the business requirements alongside that creative expertise. Very patient and personable, too!
Deborah Eastwood Office Manager at Ropes & Gray LLP I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Catherine Thomas at Art Acumen. Catherine has worked with me several times on various different collections, budgets, concepts and has always delivered to an exceptionally high standard. Catherine is passionate about her work and has an in-depth knowledge of not only art but also the up and coming artists and how their work can be integrated into a building's design. She had a great sense of responsibility, commitment and was always available to help solve any problems. She is a valuable member of the design team and the results of her input have contributed to the many awards subsequently given to the building and it's interiors Jackie McGrath Facilities Manager – Boston Consulting Group We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Art Acumen.
