STUDENT LEARNING & REFLECTION

SCOTT BROWN School of Environmental Planning

I have gained unique experiences working with the research team, and “real data”. I have already test-coded data from the CHANGE exhibition. Carleen and I are currently compiling an annotated bibliography to inform 4+ academic papers. We’ll later use the same sources in project podcasts. Mentorship from Dr. Groulx, Dr. Meletis and Michelle Connolly of PICS has given me new understandings of the complexities of research. The inclusion of social science, science, and community engagement is giving me invaluable insight for my future career.

CARLEEN PALTZATEnvironmental Science

I was involved in the UNBC Ethics Review process, document writing and editing, recording material for our podcasts, and was the key contact for the CHANGE

art exhibit. All of these are great complements to my classes and my involvement in “Students For a Green University”. This award has allowed me to stay involved

with a project that I am proud to contribute to. I am a science student, and this project exposes me to art, social science, public participation, research methods,

and communications—which I don’t encounter in my classes.

Art, Change, and Creativity (ACC) is a project that sits at the intersection of science, arts, and public engagement. It is a partnership between UNBC, the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions, and Two Rivers Gallery (Prince George). We challenge the idea that engagement is top down dissemination from “experts”, aiming for behavioural change. We incorporated activist and artist panels, art activities, and a co-curated art exhibition, to move climate change into new spaces and spur different dialogues. We continue to learn from our unconventional research team and data. Our goal was to disrupt typical engagement formats and to blur lines drawn between art and science, research and activism, expert and project participation. We also experienced growth as individuals and as a team. URE student involvement has added unique perspectives and key resources to our project, as we move into the reporting phase.
