FOUNDATION VISUAL ARTS

ANDREW BOSTWICK | GRAPHIC DESIGN

FOUNDATION VISUAL ARTSUpcycling trash into art treasure

At NBCCD, we regularly explore design by using al-ternative materials such as cardboard, plast ic, wire, t in, scraps and even vegetable sk ins amongst many others. Amateur and professional art ists explore ex-pression through using recycled materials and trans-forming everyday objects into art, craft and design work. With a short PowerPoint inspirational presen-tation, students are introduced to these techniques for their own mixed-media explorations.

Learning Outcome: Students wil l be expected to be able to make mixed-media creat ions from recycled material and have a basic understanding of the envi-ronmental impact of recycling.

GRAPHIC DESIGNMixed-media Self Portraits

Students will create a mixed-media self portrait using magazine clippings, construction paper and markers. Students wil l choose a theme to base their portrait on to emphasize the possibi l it ies of communication through graphic design. Typography will be explored as well as the basic elements and principles of design.

Learning outcome: Students wil l be expected to be able to create a mixed-media self portrait emphasiz-ing communication through graphic design.

JEWELLERY/METAL ARTSTexturing a Metal Dog Tag Jewel ler y has been used for centur ies as money, adornment and to show social status. Students create personalized copper pendants using hammers to ex-plore texture and stamping on metal. Students may use additional materials to add the element of colour to their creat ions. Leather cords are suppl ied so students can wear their creations immediately. The design process and use of hand tools are highlighted.

Learning Outcome: Students wil l be expected to be able to create a personalized copper pendant using hammers to texture and stamp designs on metal.

PHOTOGRAPHYTelling a Story with a Photograph

Everyone takes pictures, but NBCCD teaches the art of tak ing pictures, story tel l ing and expressing creativity through photographs. With a short Power-Point presentation, students are introduced to taking portrait pictures that go beyond ‘self ies’ or quick snap shots. Putt ing l ife into photographs, control l ing the narrative, composit ion and lighting are just some of the topics touched upon. Students form partners and use their own cell phones in this experience. Students are of fered the opportunity to share their photographs for discussion and crit ique.

Learning Outcome: Students wil l be expected to be able to take a self portrait that has good composition, l ighting and expresses their personality.

“The Clay Design with Underglazes workshop, with Chase Plourde, was an outstanding experience all around. To begin our Art Depart-ment asked the Craft College to help us come up with some unique underglaze techniques and projects we could use in our classes. Chase put together a series of activities that were hands on and would f it perfectly into the Art Curriculum. The underglaze techniques were fun to try and open doors for students wanting to go beyond the basics of underglaze colour. The Craft College is one of the few places that will offer exceptional

workshops that f it into Professional Development days at no cost. The Craft College is a great resource in our province and is willing to de-sign workshops that will work for your school. This gem of a resource helps to link your Art Department with a post-secondary institution, creating connections between schools and the artistic community, here in New Brunswick.”

RON LEGERLeo Hayes High School

“This outreach program is not only engaging but also inspirational for high school students. The hands-on activities are unique, using materials most high school students don’t have access to, and is very informative, allowing them a birds eye view of the studios, programs and life at the college. NBCCD’s programs aren’t intimidating in the least, and Trudy effectively shows that all students can be successful in the arts.”

Testimonials “As an art teacher in the northern end of the province, it can sometimes

be a challenge to get guests to visit to give my students an authentic experience with a skilled artist. Every year I make sure to book a session with the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design because their workshops offer high quality experiences from highly knowl-edgeable people. The craft college takes care of everything - I pick a day and they

show up with all the materials and resources needed for students to enjoy a full day of art making experiences. These sessions also moti-vate students to examine art and design opportunities for their future. Students are always excited when they hear that it is time for NBCCD to visit. Students enjoy the presentations and the hands-on component makes a lasting impression. Students are always proud of the work they create and we often feature the projects from NBCCD sessions in our annual art show. This was my favourite year yet - students were very proud of their

stamped metal creations and I plan to incorporate the mixed media self-portrait project in my design classes next year.

“The exper ience my art students had with the NBCCD group was amazing. My students couldn’t stop talk ing about the day with other students, who wished they could have been included. Thanks NBCCD for a fabulous workshop.”

“Trudy Gallagher and her team of experienced artists created interac-tive and informative hands-on workshops that truly engaged my stu-dents. Paired with visual slideshows and amazing discussion, students jumped at the chance to create. My Environmental Science class was a bit awestruck at the possibilities within upcycling and couldn’t get enough of the Sizzex machine. During our year end chat of favourite memories, more than one student pointed out Trudy’s visit as a high-light in their year. Making my students think about environmental issues in an alternative, tactile way was very eye opening for them and for that I am ever appreciative.”

TIA SALEYRothesay Netherwood School

“The NBCCD Art workshops have been an invaluable opportunity for our students. Not only do they get to work with new materials and learn techniques from expert instructors, Trudy also ties in art history and examples from local artists; it’s the whole package!”

Testimonials

“As an English teacher, I appreciate the opportunity for students to experience aesthetic considerations from perspectives other than their classroom teacher’s. I like to connect what they have learned from an NBCCD workshop to what they are learning in English class. I like to expand the students’ knowledge of the types of things they can study beyond school. I like to show the students how the concept of design can apply not only to the visual world but also to the world of writing. I like students to understand how ideas take shape and can result in many different outcomes. These workshops help students understand the importance of effective presentation, as was demonstrated When students did a workshop on selfie portraits. In the selfie portrait workshop, students were shown examples of uninteresting poses and interesting ones. They were asked to analyse the differences between the two and then try it themselves. After they tried it, they shared and discussed their work. Within a one-hour workshop, they learned about effective presentation, as well as the relevance of craft school studies to their lives. My students loved the workshop on selfie portraits and were hoping

NBCCD would return to do other workshops with them. Some of the students are thinking they will consider craft school, and one said that’s exactly what he wants to do when finished school, noting that he didn’t realize he could do something like that. About two-thirds of the students took the promotional material that was offered to them. All the students were excited about practicing what they’d learned about selfie portraits and periodically would ask whether NBCCD would be coming back. The professional learning day that Trudy Gallagher did with me and

another ASDS (Anglophone School District – South) teacher was help-ful and informative. Trudy showed us how to make some wire findings so that I can help students make jewellery or mobiles out of upcycled objects, which they will make in one of the NBCCD workshops. I will be able to link the concept of findings into writing skills, while also pro-viding students with the opportunity to understand the interrelatedness of many skills, concepts, and occupations.”
