Art Deco is the style that became popular in the 1920’s and 30’s.

Brief History…

Around the turn of the century the world was experiencing a profound increase in a growing middle class. The result of more people having more leisure time and money led to an explosion of decorative art, architecture, and fashion. Art Deco is based on the repetition of mathematical geometric shapes. It was considered to be an eclectic form of elegant and stylish modernism.

Art Deco Painting

Step 1In your sketchbook draw three thumbnails (small rough sketches) of ideas for your abstract art deco design. Use some of the motifs you have seen in the art deco PowerPoint. Use repeated circular and or square shapes, various kinds of lines, or organic shapes. Your design should be interesting and fill the whole page.

You can use more organic curved kinds of shapes…

Or you can use more geometric kinds of shapes. (squares, circles)

Step 2Pick your best one and draw it on the paper provided by your teacher.

Step 3Divide your image into three equal sections and neatly cut them out.

Step4 Paint each design one of the following colour schemes:

Complimentary Colours : Colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel. (Red – Green), (Blue – Orange) or (Yellow – Purple)

Analogous Colours : Colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel (Yellow, Yellow-Orange, Orange), (Violet, Blue-Violet, Red-violet), (Green, Blue-Green, Blue) etc.

Monochromatic Colour: One colour with black and white added to it.

Step 5Use a black pen or carefully painted black lines to outline your design. Be sure to ad variety by making some lines thicker than others.Step 6Mount your work on a black piece of paper.
