Art & Design (Textile Design) AS and A Level Examination Board: AQA AS and A Level Textiles encourages students to develop their skills to record experiences and observation, mainly from visual form, undertake research and gather, select and organise visual information. During this two year course, students can study in one or more of the following areas: Fashion Design, Fashion Textiles, Costume Design, Digital Textiles, Printed and/or Dyed Fabrics and Materials, Domestic Textiles, Wallpaper, Interior Design, Constructed Tex- tiles, Art Textiles and Installed Textiles. In Year 12, students will be introduced to a range of textile techniques under the disciplines of constructed textiles, dyed textiles, printed textiles, fine art textiles, and fashion textiles. Workshops will include felting, machine and hand embroidery, appliqué, screen printing, dyeing, batik and transfer printing. Component 1 Portfolio will include an extended project based on a theme. This will develop the student’s abil- ity to sustain a body of work from a starting point to a realisation. Students will be required to study the work of other artists to further their skill, research and develop ideas. Component 2 Externally-set assignment will see students select a starting point provided by the examination board on 1st February, or soon after that date. Students will produce a body of preparatory work and will conclude with 10 hours of unaided, supervised time to produce a finished outcome. In Year 13, students will develop an understanding of the work of others to develop and extend thinking and inform their own work. Visits to museums and galleries are designed to allow students to gain influence from others’ art, de- sign and craft. Unit 3 Personal Study will see students conduct a personal investigation into a theme, supported by written material and will lead to a finished final outcome. Unit 4 Externally-set assignment will see students select a starting point provided by the examination board on 1st February, or soon after that date. Students will produce a body of preparatory work and will conclude with 15 hours of unaided, supervised time to produce a finished outcome. Assessment: AS Level Component 1: Portfolio – 60% of AS Level Component 2: Externally-set Assignment comprising 10 hours’ supervised time – 40% of AS Level A Level Component 3: Personal Investigation – 60% of A Level Component 4: Externally-set Assignment comprising 15 hours’ supervised time – 40% of A Level Careers and Study Progression: This is a demanding but enjoyable course which encourages students to grow in confidence, develop their own particu- lar area of interest and produce a portfolio of work to support applications for Higher Education courses in Art and Tex- tiles. Previous students have progressed to university onto art related degree courses, through a Foundation Art and Design course. Studying A Level Textiles could lead to a career in fashion, surface textile design, fashion management, cos- tume design, textile and fashion buying, marketing and merchandising, and journalism.
