TEXTURES

1. DEFINITION: Texture is the visual and tactile quality of all the surfaces around us. Surfaces are made up of different materials and each has its own characteristics. They can be smooth, rough, hard or soft. For example a glass window is a smooth surface and the surface of a peach is velvety. Textures are usually uniform but it depends on the material used.

2. TYPES OF TEXTURES NATURAL: These are not made by men. We can find an infinite variety of textures in nature: tree bark, mountain rocks, the surfaces of leaves etc. Light can highlight the texture of an object. For example the evening light creates small shadows that enrich the texture of natural objects: trees, rocks…

ARTIFICIAL: These are man made. We often create objects that imitate natural textures, for example artificial plants. We sometimes use natural materials to make artificial objects, for example furniture made from wood. And some household objects use texture for a specific purpose like the rough texture on a handle or on a pen which helps us to grip the object better.

3. ELEMENTS AND VISUAL EXPRESSIVENESS OF VISUAL TEXTURES We can create textures by the repetition more or less regularly of a simple graphic element: dot, line, graphic signs… WEFT /REGULAR TEXTURES There are regular textures used in graphic design to fill surfaces. By doing so, we can talk about: -Equality and -Rhythm on textures. Rhythm can be defined as the repetition of an element following a determined spatial interval.
