Art History Assessment 1

Edward Gorey, Bird Thingy n.d.

I selected Edward Gorey’s image Bird Thingy to compare to my Donkey Kong illustration. Gorey’s Black and white style creates a morbid mood through the use of colors.

Edward Gorey’s artwork is influential to me because he uses black and white to create a morbid and dark image. He uses hatching and ink to create his displays for children's book/ cards. Using these techniques he creates the texture in his work. His work has a weird feeling to it but I like his humor.

Similarities

• My Art work is similar to goreys because we both used hatching techniques. We also used the same colors aiming toward a dark almost evil effect on the illustration.

Differences

• Edward’s picture has more of a past or older feel to it, I think it is from his use of only 2 colors through the hatching technique but mine appears to be less realistic. Even though his mood is dark and obviously fiction somehow he makes it seem real like it could actually exist .

Reflection

• I think Edward Gory would like my art that was influenced his Art. I think Edward Gorey would find it interesting to find out that we studied his work and made our own using his techniques but I have to admit not as well. His work is definitely better which just shows that I have more to learn.
