Greetings and Happy 2019! The school year started strong with a focus on painting. The girls became familiar with their new supplies and prepared them to be easily transported into any room. Any time is a good time for Art.

Foundations of design were introduced through the creation of still lives using fall props; deep space watercolor landscapes; acrylic pouring abstract art; and, plaster mask forms. But, opportunities for art arose in every discipline. Science class constructed rocket ships which were painted to illustrate their individual personalities. History class created large posters illustrating multiple aspects of different countries and their cultures.

By far, the most motivational aspect of art is the opportunity to create home décor. Large scale canvases were used to create vast and peaceful galaxies. Multiple smaller canvases were painted and/or collaged as intended gifts for loved ones. Other interesting creations include: cardboard shelving units, constructed to hold meditative crafts; painted plaster ornaments; uniquely decorated holiday wreaths; and scented candles.

CAVEC girls used art to inspire their peers with passion and leadership. Tiana demonstrated stylistic skills using colored chalk to create a graffiti collage of inspirational vocabulary. Katie led her peers in a demonstration of gimp tying. Myera planned a Canned Food Drive flyer with the intension of donating the proceeds to homeless shelters. These ladies give CAVEC a new meaning to the phrase, “the future is female.”

Greetings and Happy 2019! As we turn the spotlight onto the Arts at CJR in Litchfield, we uncover a holistic approach to learning. As the holidays approached, the CAVEC Artists were able to look back on the variety of artistic opportunities that have come to pass. There are endless ways to add art to the learning experience, but the process of creating art is its own learning experience.

Besides the weekly combination of History and Literature to describe, analyze, interpret and evaluate famous artworks; we problem-solved, experimented, and discovered scientific properties of diverse media including the melting of crayons or the splattering of watered-down paint. Every completed project is followed up with a self-reflection to identify strengths, weaknesses, and overall discoveries.

During the first quarter, students were able to adventure through foundations of Design within the requirements of the 2019 Calendar Contest. Students created Portraits, Still Lives, Landscapes, and architectural forms with perspective. Many CAVEC artworks were selected to be published; these lucky

artists will receive a visa along with a free copy of the Calendar. Great job boys!

As fall developed, many students enrolled in the Work Study Program helped refurbished signs for the Farm Stand in preparation of the 6th Annual Car Show; and, we were repaid with multiple pumpkins to carve. No farms, no food, and no art! At the same time, the curriculum developed into a Printmaking Unit stemming from the popularity of designing custom T-Shirts with the help of Adobe Photoshop in Graphic Arts and iron-on image papers. Students created their own stamps, linoleum cuts and silk screen prints.

The quarter ended with a focus on Color Theory which involved learning about color schemes with the help of Pouring Medium. This was also a popular experience due to the hypnotic qualities of paint as it cascades across a canvas. A huge thank you to Culinary for their drip trays! Every student created unique abstract artwork using their choice of color schemes with geometric or organic shapes. We ended the quarter by paying homage to Light by painting Color Wheels.

As the second quarter developed, we used more shapes to create Optical illusions, and built Forts with recycled cardboard. Transforming 2-dimensional shapes into 3-dimensional forms helped prepare the students for the upcoming community project. Thanks to the Farm for their Firewood platform, and worksheets given by the Math department, we were able to create origami ornaments to decorate a Rainbow tree for the LARC Festival of Trees Fundraiser. This fundraiser helps improve the lives of individuals with disabilities. The students had an opportunity to use their knowledge of color, shape and form while giving back to the community!

Art appreciation does not stop in art class. Classes like STEM, Woodshop and Construction are constantly generating multidisciplinary opportunities. These classes create the foundations of projects that end up making guest appearances in the Art room for décor and/or touch ups. From customized speakers, to Adirondack chairs, to CNC plaques, these projects become unique and personalized for each student. We certainly have a creative team here in Litchfield!
