Editor’s NoteDear Readers,

First of all, a warm welcome to all freshmen and returning seniors! I trust all of you have thoroughly enjoyed your many months of immortality and would henceforth like to declare, earth to all of you! I am sure that amongst the hordes of those of you bemoaning the end of the holidays there are a precious few like myself that are actually looking forward to the start of the school semester. The rush to be in time for the 8.30am lessons, the desperation that fuels the late night study sessions and the ever increasing pile of work that soon begins to look absolutely depressing. But then again, there are pros and cons to everything- we rush for those early lessons together with our tutorial mates who soon become our very good friends, our study sessions are fueled by good company that share our desperation and punctuated now and then by its replacement with supper sessions- sometimes, it’s a matter of perspective.

This particular issue you hold in your hands would be your esteemed editor’s final one and thus, I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to my wonderful team of writers and photographers. Without all of you, none of this could have been possible. Also, I would like to thank my readers for your continued support and do, do continue to tune in!

Warmest Regards,

JoshuaEditor-In-Chief

It’s the start of a brand new semester! Heralding it of course, are the host of orientation camps where young people will meet and forge bonds of camaraderie that will hopefully last throughout their university lives and beyond. CAC’s very own camp this year was titled “Morpheus”, which some may recall as the name of the character Lawrence Fishburne played in the popular Matrix film trilogy. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the freshmen orientation committee and our seniors who game back as group leaders and senior attached- your contribution was critical to the event’s success!

The follow up to the camp was no doubt the proverbial Freshmen Pageant Bash, where selected participants vied to come out tops in this year’s “Hunger Games” themed pageant. “Fashion District” was held in Butterfactory@One Fullerton on the 17th of August 2012 and was all in all an awesome event. Do read on for more coverage in the pages to come.

Following right behind the Freshmen Pageant Bash was the annual Cynosure Ball, this year themed “Mafia” and saw seniors returning decked out in black tuxedos and killer heels. Held at the Concorde Hotel, the one word most suitable to employ to describe the event would perhaps be “grand” for that was precisely what it was!

On a more somber note, it is our regrettable duty to announce that our special project, Drumzout, will be going into indefinite hiatus. While the event that was held this year remained largely successful and well received, percussions are admittedly a rather more niche type of performing arts and over the years, trends have dictated that interest has waned in this particular form of music and thus, the club sees it necessary to divert our attention and funds to making other events bigger and better than ever. Nevertheless, Drumzout concluded this year at the Cathay with great aplomb and in the future, may yet be revived.

Morpheus in Greek mythology is the god of dreams. Morpheus has the ability to take any human form and appear in dreams. His true semblance is that of a winged daemon, imagery shared with many of his siblings.

With a theme this epic, camp Morpheus proved its mettle by being a smashing success. Held on the end of July 2012, the camp proved to be fun, safe and enjoyable for all.

CAC Freshmen Pageant Bash - Fashion DistrictWriter: Jamie LeePhotos: Derrick Say, Cepheus Chan

On the 17th of August 2012, the culmination of our orientation camp came in the form of the highly anticipated Freshmen Pageant Bash. This year, it was held at the popular nightclub Butterfactory, down at One Fullerton. Themed after the ever popular “Hunger Games” series of book and movies, each contestant, hailing from their various “districts”, vied to win the favor of the judges against all odds. The 12 contestants, paired up with each other to form 6 districts, spent much time in vigorous training, as this year’s theme not only incorporated the de facto standard catwalk and dance segments, but also, for the first time, had a talent time section for the “tributes” to showcase their individual talents. Indeed, there is more than meets the eye for this year, the competition was stiff- there was

a budding Latin dancer, a ballerina, a break-dancer, pianist, and even a trombone player. The dance segments were choreographed by the lovely Vanessa from NTU’s MJ dance group and proved to be a hit, with the judges commenting on the high standards set by this year’s contestants. Former Miss Singapore International, Miss Geneica Luo, a seasoned veteran of beauty contests throughout Singapore was in the judging panel, along with Miss Ng Shi Wah, 2011’s Miss Personality in the Miss Singapore World pageant contest. Despite the odds, the pageant ‘s finale saw Joel Lim and Weeshan Tay walk away the King and Queen of the CAC Freshmen Pageant Bash 2012. Till next year, and may the odds be ever in your favor!

face when you consider changing your path. Skeptics will question your choice and you will soon feel disillusioned. It will not be an easy route, but there is no harm taking a less travelled path. Keep an open mind about things happening around you, and keep learning new skills in life. It will be good if you have supportive family members who will give you encouragement just when you need it most.

Art Jam: Any shout out you might have to the student population?

Enjoy your days in NTU!

business degree helped me open doors to the arts and broadcasting fields, as I first landed in the job of an Arts Festival marketing executive at National Arts Council, and then radio producer-presenter. It would have been very different if I had chosen a music degree; I would probably have missed out those opportunities.

Art Jam: What drives you and from where forth comes your artistic direction? What motivates and inspires you?

I always believe that a good piece of music or art is something that touches the hearts of your audience. A piece of work that is produced with the heart and soul of the creator will eventually be felt by the person listening or watching it. That is my artistic direction. Writing music that inspires.

Paradoxically, it is hard for me to pinpoint what motivates and inspires me. But I do try. As a composer, I am motivated when people come to me to tell me that they appreciate and like my music; as an educator, I am motivated when students thank me for being interesting and inspiring in my lessons. Music by my favorite composers inspire me most.

Art Jam: What advice would you give an NTU student who wishes to pursue something along the lines of what you have achieved?

Hone your artistic skills well (be it in music, visual arts or any other disciplines), understand your strengths and weaknesses, be humble and be prepared to accept the challenges that you will

Art Jam: Kit Yeng, you once schooled at NTU, attaining a business degree but from then on your interests and pursuits have been most diverse and interesting. What made you pick the path less taken?

Indeed, my career path seems so different from my peers. Right after NTU, I took up different roles: I worked as an arts administrator, became a radio producer-presenter (otherwise known as radio DJ), then a music student, and now a composer/arranger, choral workshop facilitator, as well as an adjunct lecturer with a local polytechnic, teaching subjects that are not related to business.

I guess I have always wanted to do things a little differently from others. Music has always been a part of my life, since I started playing the piano at 6. I liked banging on the piano and enjoyed

improvising and composing tunes when I was young. At one point in time, I even wanted to become an orchestra conductor! Though it didn’t work out, I got to join a community choir and became one of its conductors. I was given opportunities to compose for the choir, and fortunately my compositions were often well-received. Encouraged by the recognition, I went on to take up studies in music composition to hone my skills. Nowadays, I collaborate with choirs, ensembles and theatre groups, writing music of diverse genres.

Hence even though I attained a business degree, deep down in my heart, I know I want to do something related to arts. I suppose there is this “stubbornness” in me that encouraged to pick the path less taken.

Art Jam: Why did you choose to pursue a business degree instead of one in the fine arts? Do you stand by your decision in retrospect?

When I decided to pursue the business degree, it was out of practical considerations at that point in time. Honestly, I was torn between making a choice with my brain or my heart. A business degree would have been a ‘safe’ option, as it is a common belief that upon graduation, I would be able to find a job in the business sector with much ease, compared to having a music degree where I would end up being a piano teacher. Eventually my brain won over my heart, and I chose to enroll in NTU’s business degree, specializing in Marketing.

There was a time when I regretted not pursuing a music degree at an earlier stage, but looking back, I feel that I have made a discerning choice, as it made my life so much more colorful. Armed with marketing principles and concepts, my

expensive. Everything from top to bottom was excellent,

from the food to the prizes given out to lucky draw winners. As per tradition, long

service awards were given out to show the club’s appreciation for members who’ve been with us throughout the years through thick and thin, regardless of the committee they belonged to. This year, in addition to the long service awards, many creative awards such as “moment of the year”, “picture of the year” and “video of the year” were also given out.

Hail the black

and white. The suits and ties. The tattoos

and the liberal overdose of eye shadow. And of course, the toy guns and

swords and knives. This year, the CAC Social and Welfare committee was proud to present the fruit of their labor over the holidays and beyond- Cynosure Ball 2012. A brief history on Cynosure. Cynosure ball is an event unlike any other organized by NTU CAC. “Cynosure” is

defined as something

that strongly attracts attention due to its proverbial

brilliance and such is the innuendo whereby each year, a grand party is held, usually in conjunction with a pageant(for seniors only), to thank our seniors for their efforts in their various member clubs, special projects and other committees in the academic year past.

This year, Mafia was the theme and while admittedly a few too many black suits and dresses were seen, the combination of the dress code and the props made the event look very much “badass” for the lack of a more proper term for it. The Emcee, Wayne, came dressed in the theme with skintight tattoo sleeves which went pretty well with his bona fide signature hairstyle.

ARTJAM ISSUE30 ISSUE30 ARTJAM14 15

The pageant contestants in Cynosure 2012 proved to be stunning in the skin after seeing them on the various promotional posters and videos online. Their dance moves were slick and catwalk professional and were absolutely charming when it came to the question and answer (Q&A) section of the contest. The Emcee, Wayne, kept the crowd entertained throughout the event and not a dull moment was to be found.

All in all, the event was a great success and do look forward to Cynosure 2013!
