Line and Direction
Line and the direction of line are significant in conveying mood and action.
Take a pencil and draw lines all over your page that move in the direction of vertical, horizontal and diagonal. How does each line direction feel?
materials cartridge / drawing paper A3 size
2B 4B 6B lead pencils, coloured pencils
Line and Emotion
Take a new piece of paper and coloured pencils or textas.Experiment with these to create lines conveying your
emotions.For example you could draw red sharp angled lines to
show anger.
Or blue horizontal lines to create peace and calm.
Try using other colours and lines to make other feelings. Draw curved lines, sharp angles, broken lines, continuous lines
Try these
exercises
Vary the thickness of
your lines.
Try using different
pencils 2B, 4B, 6B
and vary the pressure
you put on the pencil.
Use other mediums,
pastels,crayons or
paints to experiment
with line.
Different lines for different effects.
Left and Right
Swap hands and draw lines with your non-dominant hand.
Don’t worry about the results , just have fun and experiment with
lines and direction.
Try a new medium to draw with
Just For Fun
Using any drawing medium of your choice ‘scribble’ all over the page.
This is a great warm up activity and allows you to develop confidence in mark making.

Use pastel paper as it’s texture
this will hold the pastels onto
the page.
