This pasta skeleton is easily made from a few different typesof pasta and dried beans glued to a piece of black
construction paper.
When you're done, you'll have a great Halloween decoration
that you can also use to learn the names of some of ourbones. For apage with the bones labeled, click here.
Supplies:
A few different types of pasta and dried beans, like spaghetti, macaroni, tiny tube pasta, long tube pasta, wagon wheels, long

You can use just about any type of pasta (or
dried beans) for the bones. A wagon wheel isnice for the head. Spaghetti makes good

are good as vertebrae in the spine. Long tubes
make collar bones. Longer tubes or long
spirals make good arm and leg bones. Small

Draw a spiral on a paper plate. Cut
along the line.
Decorate the paper plate using markers, crayons,
or paint.
Using green construction paper, draw a leaf and cut itout. Either draw tiny butterfly eggs on it or glue on
tiny paper circles (either cut them out or use a hole
punch to make some). A cluster of butterfly eggs are
usually laid on the underside of a leaf; the eggs are
white or yellow or greenish, and are circular to oval.
Draw and cut out a caterpillar (the egg hatches into
a caterpillar, which spends its entire time eatingleaves). Decorate it.
Draw and cut out a pupa (the stage during which the
caterpillar makes a protective case around itself and
turns into a butterfly). Decorate it.
To make butterfly wings, fold a small piece of paper
in half, and draw half a butterfly along the fold line.
Using dark paper, make a
body for your butterfly (it's
basically a long oval with a
circular head).

Papier-Mch Globe
Make your own globe of the Earth from a balloon
covered with newspaper, flour-water glue, and paint.
Although this is a messy project that takes days to
complete, the results are very nice and teach a
tremendous amount about geography.
Supplies needed: A round balloon Lots of newspaper Flour and water glue (instructions below) A container for mixing the glue (old plastic containers work
well)
A spoon or stick to stir the glue A printer Pencil Blue and green tempera paint Paint brushes A dark marker
Make a simple, thin glue from flour and water. Mix 1
cup of flour into 1 cup of water until the mixture is
thin and runny. Stir into 4 cups of boiling water (the
heating gives the glue a nice consistency, but is not

necessary). Simmer for about 3 minutes, then cool.
Tear a lot of strips of newspaper. Strips should be
about 1 inch wide; the length doesn't really matter.
Blow up and tie a round balloon for each student.
Papier-Mch: Dip each strip of paper in the flour glue,
wipe off excess, and wrap the strip around the balloon.
Have at least three layers surrounding the balloon. Let
it dry (at least overnight) after each layer.
Let the globe dry completely (it may take a few days).
When the papier-mch is dry, the balloon usually pops
by itself, and separates from the outer papier-mch
skin.
Print out maps of the Earth (or use a commercial
globe or maps).
If using our printouts, choose color map
printouts (Western Hemisphere andEastern
Hemisphere) or black-and-white map printouts
(Western HemisphereandEastern Hemisphere).
Draw the Continents on the Globe:
Using a pencil, draw a line around themidsection of the balloon representing the
equator, and draw a dot for each of the
poles.
Draw the continent you live in. To draweach continent, show the student the shape
of that continent, how big it is in relation
to the globe, and where it is positioned

(with respect to the equator, the poles, and
the other continents). Using a pencil, draw
that continent on the globe.
Repeat this process for the othercontinents.
Work on a bed of newspapers; this is pretty
messy. Paint the seven continents green with
tempera paints.
When the continents are done and the paint hasdried, use blue paint to represent the oceans,
seas, and lakes. Let the paint dry.
Using a dark marker, have the
student label the major
features on the globe and also
where the child lives. The
student can mark and labelthe equator, the seven
continents, the oceans, the
poles, etc. (depending on the
student's grade level).

Supplies needed:
A white balloon Scissors 2 white plastic grocery bags Tape A black marker
Cut the handles off the white plastic grocery
bags. If there are colored markings on the
bags, cut them off too.
Leaving the seam at the bottom of the bags intact,
cut the bags into strips.
Blow up a white balloon.
Tape the plastic bags around the end of the
balloon (tape the bags in a circle a few inches
from one end of the balloon). If you plan on
hanging the ghost up as a decoration, tape the
plastic bags around the plain end, leaving the tied
end of the balloon exposed so you can tie a string
to the top of the ghost.
Using a black marker, draw two eyes and a mouth
on the ballon.
You now have a spooky ghost that you can use as a
Halloween decoration or as a toy (but not for very
young children). This ghost flies really well!

Scary Mouth Pop-up Card
Make a Mouth Pop-up Card. When you open the
card, the mouth opens! You can make your card
look like a bird, a shark, or a big-mouth monster.
This is a very easy project and a lot of fun.
Supplies needed: 2 pieces of paper (colored card-stock works great) paste scissors Crayons and/or markers
Fold a piece of paper in half. Cut a line about 2
inches long (5 cm) about the middle of the crease.
Fold back each of the flaps to make 2 triangles.
Open up the card. Lay it down like a v.
Push one of the triangles up and pinch theedges together above the card.
Repeat with the other triangle.
Close the card and push down on the folds tomake them well-creased.

When opened, you have a pop-up mouth.
Fold another piece of paper in half (a differentcolor looks great).
Glue this new card to the outside of your pop-upcard. Don't glue near the mouth area or it won't
open! Let the glue dry.
Draw a scary animal around the mouth and finish
decorating your card.
For variations on this card, don't cut a
straight line - cut a wavy line or a
zigzag for scary teeth. You can even
make more than one mouth for 2
monsters or a two-headed monster.This pop-up area also looks a lot like a
bird's beak or a shark's mouth.
