Alexandre Ilmov was born in Lviv, Ukraine, in 1949 in a Russian family. Among his ancestors he has travelers, Far East explorers, musicians and Cossack chieftains. In high school he was the school newspaper’s artist. Some of his linocut portraits were published by the republican children’s magazine. At the same time, he began to make photographs with his father’s camera “Zenith”, and then continued with his own compact “Smena” and middle format “Liubitel”.Having a great passion for travel, Alexandre worked as a guide and interpreter with international tourist groups.When he decided to deal with the meaning of life, he was admitted to the Leningrad University and studied ethics and aesthetics in the philosophy department. In parallel with philosophy studies, he had graduated from the Department of Social Sciences, having been awarded the diplomas of the designer and photographer. During his university years, he became interested in astrology, in which subsequently he became involved professionally. He was the founder and the first president of the first Russian astrological association and the school of astrology. In 1993, Alexandre immigrated to the United States. In his photography, he uses both film and digital techniques.

Александр Илмов родился во Львове.Среди его предков были путешественники-

исследователи Дальнего Востока, музыканты, военные и атаманы казачьих

войск. Еще в школе он стал рисовать стенгазеты, учебные пособия. В одном из

детских журналов была опубликована его линогравюра - портрет поэта Т. Шевченко.

Одновременно Александр занимался в клубе «Космос» и в киностудии. Увлекся

фотографией, когда получил в руки отцовский «Зенит». Затем была уже своя

«Смена» и широкоформатный «Любитель».В армии он оформлял ленинскую комнату,

писал плакаты. После демобилизации трудился на заводе в Бюро эстетики,

разрабатывал дизайн радиоаппаратуры, для которого создал новый шрифт. Как художник, писал маслом и акварелью.

Любовь к путешествиям Александр реализовал, работая гидом-переводчиком

с чешскими группами в международном молодёжном бюро «Спутник».

После чего, решив разобраться со смыслом жизни, поступил в Ленинградский

университет на философское отделение по специальности «Этика и эстетика».

Параллельно закончил факультет общественных профессий, получил дипломы

художника-оформителя и фотографа-корреспондента. Во время учёбы у

Александра возник интерес к астрологии, которой в дальнейшем он стал заниматься

профессионально. В результате он создал первую в России астрологическую ассоциацию и школу астрологии, где был президентом и ведущим преподавателем.

Примерно в то же время он начал работать над философской проблемой символа.

В апреле 1993 года Александр эмигрировал в США. Путешествуя по Америке, много

работал как с плёночной, так и с цифровой аппаратурой.

James Jahrsdorfer started painting right after graduating from the high school. He studied drawing and painting at a college close to his home. He taught himself a great deal by studying the works of great masters of the past, making copies of their works. He also painted directly from nature. Soon, James started to show his works in art galleries. He also started working as an illustrator for U.S Army publications. Having mastered a 3D design computer program, he continued to work as a technical illustrator for a sport equipment production company. At that time, James had his first commercial exhibitions in New York and Washington, DC. Year by year, his experience and mastery were growing. Having created special art effects for sports uniforms, James Jahrsdorfer had attained a unique plasticity in his work. The talent cannot be acquired; one must be born with it. His paintings and drawings clearly demonstrate his unique individual style. James is a master of pastel, one of the most difficult and complex media in the visual arts, but is also completely at ease with oil painting. His work captures the real emotional strength, which exists both in nature and in mankind.James Jahrsdorfer is a naturally gifted artist whose work and artistry will continue to gladden us for a long time.

Джеймс Джарсдорфер начал рисовать в возрасте двадцати лет, после окончания школы. Он изучал

рисунок и живопись в колледже недалеко от своего дома и научился многому, созерцая работы мастеров

прошлого, делая копии их работ. Кроме того, Джеймс много рисовал с натуры. Вскоре он начал выставлять

свои произведения в галереях. Параллельно он начал выполнять заказы в качестве иллюстратора

военных изданий армии США. Освоив компьютерную программу для работы

с трехмерными изображениями, облегчающую выполнение чертежей, он

продолжил профессионально заниматься техническим иллюстрированием - для компании, выпускающей спортивный

инвентарь. В это же время прошли первые две выставки-продажи работ Джеймса - в Нью-Йорке,

а затем в Вашингтоне. С годами пришли опыт и мастерство,

да и работа в качестве дизайнера принесла свои плоды в общую

копилку. Придумав особые эффекты для спортивной униформы, Джеймс

Джарсдорфер достиг уникальной пластичности в собственных

произведениях. Впрочем, талант нельзя приобрести, с этим надо

родиться. Картины и рисунки Джеймся демонстрируют это однозначно - во всех

свойственных этому художнику формах и стилях. Он - мастер пастели, одной

из самых трудных и сложных техник в изобразительном искусстве, и в то же время он чувствует себя совершенно

непринужденно в масляной живописи. В его работах живет какая-то естественная эмоциональная сила, глубинно-природная

Alexander Khomsky was born in Moscow.He studied classic drawing and painting with the most famous art professors in Moscow and finally was accepted into the most prestigious and highly regarded Stroganoff Institute of Fine and Applied Arts founded by Count Stroganoff in 1825 as the first private academy of art in Russia. After graduating Khomsky worked as an Interior Designer and Mural Artist for the Russian Federation Art Fund and at the same time continued to master his painting technique. He also developed interest in the avant-garde contemporary art and was accepted in highly recognizable Union of Graphic Artists in Moscow.This organization, which was much more liberal then the official Union of Artists, the major official art organization in the former USSR, was supporting vanguard art and underground artists, whose work was very difficult to promote during communist era in Russia. His first most prestigious show was held in Bonn, Germany, in Christian Democratic Party Headquarters in 1988. It was named was “Bonn – Moscow, Russian Vanguard Art” and represented most important Russian vanguard artists such as Ilya Kabakov, Komar and Melamid and other well known vanguard artists from Russia.The exhibition was held during the first visit of Russian president Michael Gorbachev to Germany and was very highly regarded in German press. Two of the Alex’s paintings were sold to Swiss ambassador to Germany, who later became Alex’s collector and acquired several art pieces for his vast collection of vanguard Russian art. From this point Khomsky’s career as an international artist had started. Then next year he had his first solo exhibition at the Gallery Doll in Kotzting, Germany. He also started to be represented by the International Gallery Reich in Koln. Seeking artistic freedom, Khomsky moved to US in 1990.Since then he participated in more then 50 solo and group shows in US, Canada and Europe. His art was reviewed in many publications such as Los Angeles Times, World Art News among others.

Александр Хомский родился в Москве.Он изучал классический рисунок и живопись

с самыми известными профессорами искусства в Москве и, наконец, был

принят в самых престижный и уважаемый Строгановский институт изобразительных и

прикладных искусств, основанный графом Строгановым в 1825 году, как первая частная академия искусства в России.После окончания Александр Хомский

работал дизайнером по интерьеру и художником для Русского Фонда

Федерации искусства, в то же время продолжая совершенствовать

технику живописи.Он был принят в Союз

художников-графиков в Москве.Эта организация была

более либеральной, чем официальный Союз художников,

она поддерживала авангардное искусство и “подземных” художников, чье творчество

было очень сложно продвигать в коммунистическую эпоху в России.

Его первое, самое престижное шоу, было проведено в Бонне, Германии, в штаб-

квартире Христианско-демократической партии в 1988 году, которая получила

название “Бонн-Москва, Россия авангардного искусства”, где были

представлены наиболее важные русские художники авангарда, такие, как Илья

Кабаков, Комар и Меламид и другие известные художники из России.

Выставка состоялась в ходе первого визита президента России Михаила Горбачева в Германию и было очень высоко оценена

в немецкой прессе. Две картины были проданы послу Швейцарии в Германию,

который позже стал коллекционировать работы Александра и приобрел несколько

произведений для своей обширной коллекции русского авангарда.

Valeriy Kovalev was born on 28 August, 1949. He graduated from secondary school and, with honors, from Art School.He was a member of various youth art groups and later was elected as a member of the Russian Union of Artists. He is a painter, sculptor, designer and muralist. His art works are constantly being shown at numerous group and personal exhibitions in Russia and abroad. The sculptural landscaping compositions created by Valeriy were installed in several cities in Russia, Lithuania, Poland, and USA. His monumental wall paintings are presented at the building facades in Kaliningrad and Svetlogorsk. Many of his paintings can be found in the museums and private collections.Since the mid-eighties Kovalev became seriously engaged in book graphics. From that time, he had illustrated more than forty books. Recently, Kovalev is had discovered for himself the new genre, the sculpture miniature, and now is working on series of medals and plaques dedicated to the history of Kaliningrad (form. Koenigsberg).

Живописец, график, скульптор, дизайнер, монументалист Валерий Ковалёв родился

28 августа 1949 года. Окончил среднюю общеобразовательную школу и, с

отличием, художественную. Произведения Ковалёва неоднократно

экспонировались на коллективных и персональных выставках в России и за

рубежом. Скульптурные садово-парковые композиции, выполненные художником,

установлены в ряде городов России, Литвы, Польши, США. Монументальная

настенная живопись представлена на фасадах зданий в Калининграде и Светлогорске. Многие произведения

станковой живописи находятся в частных коллекциях и музеях.

С середины восьмидесятых годов Ковалёв, параллельно с другими видами

изобразительного искусства, серьёзно занимается книжной графикой. За эти годы он оформил свыше сорока книг.

В последнее время, открыв для себя ещё один пласт художественного

творчества – скульптурную миниатюру, Ковалёв работает над серией медалей

и плакеток, посвящённых истории Калининграда - Кёнигсберга.

Eugene Kuperman was born in Kharkov, Ukraine in 1987. His native city was too far not only from Paris and New York, but even from Russian cultural centers Moscow and St. Petersburg. Nevertheless the winds of modernism were reaching even the province, and in that Russian-Ukrainian city was formed the group of poets, artists, photographers and architects supported by progressive scientists, engineers and students wishing to keep up with modern European art. Even though the perestroika had begun at that time, they had to become frondeurs to wade through the icebergs of Socialist realism, which were melting in the both capitals but seemed to still be adamant in Ukraine. When Eugene Kuperman was born, it was just 14 years since Picasso passed away, and Salvador Dali was still alive. These were the bogey names, with which the Soviet authorities were still trying to intimidate artists who, in a dash to overcome the rigid canons, decided to throw in a scrap-heap of history not only Deineka or Laktionov, but also Shishkin, Levitan and all sorts of “Itinerants”. Arguing that the artist cannot be just a photographer and a copyist, they have cited Goethe’s saying: “If I paint my mistress’ pug-dog true to nature, I have two pugs, but never a work of art.” Their fellow photographers were as well in search for the new ways of artistic expression, trying the approaches of surrealism and impressionism. Moreover, in the new generation of visual artists, not considering themselves the formal members of any particular art movement, were formed the real creators, who combine both painting and photography as means of visual representation. Eugene Kuperman belongs to that cohort and, despite his young age, had become a Master.

далеко не только от Парижа или Нью-Йорка, но даже от Санкт-Петербурга и

Москвы – главных очагов художественной жизни Советского Союза. Тем не менее

ветры модернизма долетали и сюда, и в этом украинско-русском городе

образовалась интеллигентная группа поэтов, художников, архитекторов, фотографов и поддерживающих их ученых, инженеров и студентов, стремившаяся идти в ногу с

западно-европейским временем. И хотя перестройка уже началась,

им приходилось слегка фрондировать, преодолевая устрашающие айсберги

соцреализма, которые уже подтаивали в столицах, но казались тогда еще

несокрушимыми на Украине. В тот год, когда родился Евгений, всего лишь 14

лет минуло со дня смерти Пикассо, а Сальвадор Дали был еще жив. Это были имена-жупелы, ими власти по-прежнему

пытались запугивать художников, которые, в порядке противостояния и порыве

преодоления канонов, решили сбросить в мусорник истории не только Дейнеку или

Лактионова, но и Шишкина, и Левитана, и «передвижников». Уличая ретроградов в

отсталом натурализме, они приводили слова Гёте о том, что художник не должен быть фотографом-копиистом: «Если художник в точности нарисует мопса, то будет два

мопса, а искусство ничего не приобретет». Фотографы тоже не оставались

в стороне от поиска новых средств изображения - ими были взяты ими на

вооружение импрессионизм и сюрреализм. Более того, в новом поколении мастеров

изобразительного искусства, позволяющих себе не оглядываться на принадлежность

к каким-либо определенным «измам», появились творцы, которые одновременно,

в одном лице, являются и художниками, и фотографами, выбирая ту или иную

технику в качестве средства выражения - в зависимости от конкретного творческого импульса. К ним принадлежит и Евгений

Куперман, про которого, несмотря на молодость, можно уверенно

сказать: «Это – Мастер».

I was born in Donetsk, Ukraine, in the spring of 1959. In 1975 I had finished 9 years in high school and continued to study at vocational school in Kiev mechanical works. My father was a big fan of photography for all his life. My acquaintance with photography happened in high school when I was making portraits of my friends and classmates, and continued during my military service. Upon being discharged from the army I became a professional photographer and started to work at a photo studio. My photos were published in our local newspaper, and some were exhibited at art events in Kiev. But most of all I liked to make color slides. My father was a master of sports of cycling. He traveled all over the Soviet Union and had several thousand photographs and slides from all parts of the country, and I tried to keep up with him.In 1997 we immigrated to the United States and had brought our SLR cameras Zenit and Kiev with us. A year later I had bought Nikon 6006, and only then I got a real pleasure of photographing. Then digital technologies had come, and now one should change the camera every year to keep up with the progress. Now I use Canon ;. I always try to limit post processing of my digital images to keep their natural look.

Я родился в городе Донецке весной 1959 года. Детство и юность прошли

в г. Новоград-Волынском. В 1975 году закончил 9 классов и пошел

учиться в Киевское ПТУ на слесаря механосборочных работ. В 1978 году

пошел в армию, в 1980 году вернулся. Мой отец всю свою жизнь занимался

фотографией. Помню, как и я по несколько раз перефотографировал всех своих

друзей и одноклассников, и на этом мое школьное знакомство с фотографией

закончилось. Второй раз за фотоаппарат я взялся в армии. По возвращении из

армии встал вопрос о трудоустройстве. В горбыткомбинате мне предложили идти

учиться на фотографа. Через полтора года, став дипломированным фотографом,

я устроился работать в фотосалон. Много свободного времени проводил

в фотоклубе. Мои снимки печатались в нашей городской газете, и некоторые

работы участвовали в выставках в Киеве. Но больше всего мне понравилось снимать на слайды. Мой отец был мастером спорта

СССР по велотуризму. Он объездил весь Союз, у него несколько тысяч фотографий

и слайдов со всех уголков страны, и я старался не отставать от него.

В 1997 году мы уехали в Америку и захватили с собой камеры “Зенит” и “Киев”. Через год я купил себе “Никон 6006”, и вот тогда получил настоящее наслаждение от

съемки. Потом пришло время цифровой техники, и камеры уже приходилось менять каждый год, чтобы поспеть за прогрессом. Сейчас я пользуюсь камерой “Canon 50D”.

Снимки на компьютере стараюсь сильно не обрабатывать, считаю, что так они теряют

свою естественность.

My acquaintance with photography happened in high school when I was making portraits of my friends and classmates, and continued during my military service. Upon being discharged from the army I became a professional photographer and started to work at a photo studio.

I was fascinated with photography since my childhood. I still remember with a great warmth those summer nights with my father in the kitchen with curtained window, red photo light, the magic of the image developing on a white paper, group photos with friends, the joy when the girl liked her portrait…My passion for photography got a new start when I moved to US several years ago to do research in the university and by chance I’ve met Vladimir Andreyev who I can call my teacher in photography. His works inspired me and had revived my forgotten passion. Now I can say that because of photography I’ve changed the way I see the world, I can notice and picture the moments of life which otherwise would have passed unnoticed. Photography for me is the way to see and convey the beauty than I see around us - the majesty of nature, the elegance of architecture, the beauty of the human face with its feelings and emotions, and much more.

Меня зовут Евгений Лукьянов. Я врач. Последние несколько лет

перед приездом в Америку работал онкологом в клинике. Сейчас я

работаю в Университете Нью-Йорка как ученый, изучаю новые методы

лечения опухолей мозга. Мое детское увлечение

фотографией получило вторую жизнь и поднялось на другую

орбиту под влиянием моего друга и учителя Владимира Андреева,

чьи вдохновенные работы заново открыли для меня желание

узнавать, находить и запечатлевать прекрасные моменты нашей жизни.

Могу сказать, что благодаря фотографии я стал по-другому

смотреть на мир и по-другому его видеть.

Почему люди смотрят на картины, слушают музыку, читают

стихи, любуются природой? Что хотят они найти в этом? Созвучия. Гармонии. Чувства осознания себя частью великого Целого, звучания

струн своей души в аккорде, пробужденном словом, звуком,

картиной. Внести в жизнь жажду и радость видения необычного и

прекрасного, поймать неповторимое мгновение, промелькнувшую искру – вот что может сделать фотография

и вот почему это делаю я. И если мне удалось передать вам частицу

моих чувств, моего видения, подобрать аккорд, созвучный и Вам

– значит, мир уже стал лучше.
