Mike Rooneywww.mikerooneystudios.comI love to paint. I have painted all mylife. But now I want to paint every sin-gle day. My style is very eclectic, neverreally following a set pattern. I like togo outside without a preconceivedmethod or formula. I approach eachpainting differently and like to experi-ment, to shake things up a little.I'm a full-time plein air painter, deliber-

ately choosing the outdoors to a comfortable studio. Bugs, peskyby-standers and bad weather are just a few of the inconveniencesI endure to capture the colors and nuances of nature. My subject matter varies, but I love painting outside year round, near the coast from Cape Cod in the late summer, to Key West inthe winter, and all points in between. They say paint what youlove most. That's the coast, with its boats, marshes and architec-ture, etc., so I try to be there painting most of the time.I also love Charleston, SC and paint there often too. Sometimes ascene stops me in my tracks and I just have to paint it. This defi-nitely requires a flexible schedule because spontaneity is crucial toa plein air artist. I want to have the ability to determine my owncourse in life and to paint the world, as I see it, everyday.Mike’s Workshops: FR1233, SA1231, SU1212

Carol Ann Shermanwww.carolannshermanstudio.comThat old saying “Love is lovelier thesecond time around” proved to holdtrue with my art. I finally found a wayto fill that vacant spot in my life. I havesince decided to make my art my part-ner, my companion and my love for life.I am currently employing watercolors, acrylics, batik and just a pinch of col-lage in my work. I do find the figure

and its situation to be the most intriguing subject matter. I findthe speechless animal emotion to talk louder than words at times.I feel it necessary to give voice to what I consider to be underlyingemotion in our world. I like my paintings to portray a well writtennovel composed of strong composition, vivid lively color, lines ofpersonality and an outstanding memorable emotional quality. Thebest reaction I can get from a viewer is a point and a giggle!Carol’s Workshops: SA1215, SA1225, SU1205, SU1216

Cynthia WinikaCynthia Winika is a multi-media artistwho has shown her work in museumsand galleries in the US and abroad. She is the principle encaustic instructorfor R&F Handmade Paints and hasbeen teaching nationally and interna-tionally for over 15 years. She has re-ceived grants from the Women'sStudio Workshop and the New YorkFoundation for the Arts. Her paintings

and encaustic technical advice are featured in The Art of EncausticPainting by Joanne Mattera. To view more of Cynthia's work, goto www.chelseaartgalleries.com.I have always been attracted to the saturation, sensuality, andmysterious veiled quality of beeswax based paintings; especiallythe Fayum mummy portraits. Painting, doing collage work, andprintmaking, combined with the use of encaustic technique allowsme a way of invigorating and combining these processes. This hasled to my current work. I love the way I can subdue or clarify anunderlying work by varying the number of wax applications. Lay-ering with encaustic medium, scribing and filling incisions with oilpaint to give a dry point look, creating multi-level, layered col-lages allows me to create a depth under my surface with anarcheological quality, expressing the history of the process.Cynthia’s Workshops: TH1226, FR1232, SA1230
