Due Sunday October 19, 2008 ART PROJECT Title: The Purposes of Art Instructions: In order to learn even more about the purposes of art in a different way try this studio art project. Art is around us everyday--one of the purposes of taking this class is to learn to see art and appreciate it in our daily lives. For the next few days become aware of everything you see and try to figure out if the images you see are art. What purposes do they serve? Cut out pictures from magazines, newspapers and even print out some images you may find on the web and make a poster that you can then title "What Is Art?". This kind of activity is called a grounding exercise and it will help you learn and remember the content of this chapter. Again, it is helpful to do something working with the visual when you are studying art. Remember the purposes for art you should include in your poster will be all of the following: Art creates beauty Art reveals truth Art exposes fantasy Art creates order and harmony Art expresses chaos Art records and commemorates experience Art reflects social and cultural context Art protests injustice and raises social consciousness Art enhances our environment Art immortalizes
