1. MATERIALS

In all Art Centers there are 5 categories. Each category must have 3 to 5 materials available for the children at all times.1. Drawing Materials2. Painting Materials3. 3-D Materials4. Collage Materials5. Tools

• Drawing Materials: crayons, markers, pencils, colored pencils, chalk, things to draw on, different shapes and sizes of paper, and so on.

• Paint Materials: finger paint, tempera paint, water color paint sets, with brushes and paper.

• 3-D Materials: play dough, clay, wood, pipe cleaners, and modeling compound.

• Collage Materials: glue, various types, colors, cardboard, magazine clippings, fabric, tissue paper, pom poms, and so on.

• Tools: safe scissors, staplers, hole punchers, tape, sponges, play dough tools, rollers, and various brushes

INFANT, TODDLER, AND CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS ACCOMMADATIONS

In a classroom all materials should be accessible to children with special needs. Depending on what condition the child may have, would determine what supplies need to be put out of reach for safety reasons.

Some things that would be different for an infant or toddler room would be: They are still able to touch and see their art, but it is protected Certain materials such as scissors, pen, glue, staplers, 3-D materials would

be out of reach due to safety reasons.

2. DIVERSITY• To represent diversity in

an art learning center, you must provide a variety of art materials and tools for children to choose from. You should have materials based on different levels of ability as well.

3. Access to MaterialsIf the children are able to freely access materials and interactions the art center, they will develop skills and abilities such as:• Learn how to express their own individual creativity.• Helps build independency and raises self-esteem.

4. The Teacher’s RoleThe teacher’s role is to encourage individual expression. As well as, offer specific materials, but still give the children options, and allow them to choose.Example:• The teacher puts out blue and green paint with white or

manila construction paper. The child is able to choose what color paint and what color construction paper they want. Which makes them feel in control and independent.
