Remember to think about presentation, how could you make your page look
like the artists work - Bold colours, circles/dots, primary colours, comic book
style text.
• Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York in 1923. He
became famous for his bright and bold paintings of
comic strip cartoons as well as his paintings of eve-
ryday objects.
• Roy Lichenstein is one of the leading American pop
artists during the 60’s.
• His work reflects modern typographic and printing
techniques such as ben-day dots and he makes use
of common images.
• In the early 1960s, he developed a new style of print
that mimicked comic book frames.
• Roy Lichtenstein’s use of comic book graphics was pretty revolutionary for his time be-
cause it caused people to see popular culture as art.
• Lichtenstein drew heavily on DC Comics for his art work. He made extensive use of Ben
-Day dots, which are used for shading in comic book graphics.
• Lichtenstein chose colours carefully, to imitate the four colours of printers’ inks.
• When Lichensteins work was first seen,
art critics questioned his originality– at
the time there were no copyright laws,
and so his ‘reproductions’ were a moral
controversy rather than legal.
• He was sometimes accused of copying
comics exactly, but he said that he
made changes to the pictures – right
down to the tiniest placement of indi-
vidual dots. He was also criticized for using very basic painting techniques.
• His work served to bridge the gap between the “high” classic art and the “low” art of popular culture.
Interesting fact: Lichtenstein’s success with his comic book art really annoyed Andy Warhol, who had been experimenting with the same thing! Lichtenstein’s pieces were picked up by a well-known gallery and exhibited first, which caused Warhol to look elsewhere for inspiration. This is how he came to make his wildly successful Campbell Soup Cans prints!
