Artbeat is a community arts initiative launched by Allen & Overy in 2003 which was inspired by a model developed in our New York office.

It aims to harness the artistic talents and entrepreneurial spirit of local young people and communities, with the aim of improving outcomes for its participants. Artbeat aims to strengthen relationships with communities by providing much needed resources for art education in order to inspire young people from underprivileged backgrounds by developing their creative and entrepreneurial skills enabling them to work alongside professional artists and explore new media.

Artbeat is delivered in London and New York and forms part of our global corporate responsibility programme structured around the theme of Access to Education and Employment. Each year young people work with professional artists whom A&O commissions to produce artwork on a particular theme. The artwork is then displayed in A&Os offices before being returned to the students as part of their portfolio for art and design qualifications.

Artbeat also delivers enterprise workshops where professional business consultants teach students how to create, manage and run a business, or develop a product, with a focus on the creative industries. In this way, participants learn valuable entrepreneurial skills that can be applied across all disciplines.

A&O believes that business has an important role to play in changing young peoples’ horizons and helping them to reach their full potential. Artbeat is recognised as an award-winning arts programme by Business in the Community as an example of excellence and awarded a “Big Tick” and Highly Commended in the Arts and Business Award Category.

Artbeat: Ten Year Reflection

Changing City, Making your Mark, Identity, Reflection, Colour, Translucency and Opacity, Life along the Thames, the Olympics, Literacy, World Cultures and Society – a handful of themes students have considered as part of Artbeat over the last ten years.

800 participants from ages 9 to 90 have now taken part in Artbeat, creating a collection of thought-provoking art for Allen & Overy offices.

The benefits of the programme to the students reach well beyond the art class. Research shows that participation in the arts help young people develop literacy skills, promotes creativity, entrepreneurship, cultural diversity and social cohesion. Well-executed arts education programmes can also improve academic performance and build the skills necessary for workplace success.

Over the years the students have worked in diverse media such as sculpture, stone carving, artwork in glass, textile silks, aluminium, lenticular, ceramics, photomontage, multitudes, life-casting, soundscapes and metal.

Thank you to everyone (past and present) who has been involved in supporting, developing, managing, participating and often immersing themselves in Artbeat over the 10 years.

This catalogue celebrates the artwork produced from the past year’s workshops held in conjunction with Bethnal Green Academy (“BGA”) our partner secondary school in London.

Creative Workshop

GCSE Art & Design Year 9 students from our partner secondary school, Bethnal Green Academy are given the opportunity to take part in a 10-week workshop conducted by professional artists and assisted by the art teachers from BGA. With this workshop, we aim to challenge the children to develop their perceptions of art and benefit from the opportunities that abound within the arts beyond their traditional exposure to art and design through the school curriculum. In turn, the children are encouraged through site visits to Allen & Overy’s offices and to galleries and museums across London to increase their awareness of what London and the City have to offer and to realise their creative potential.

The theme for Artbeat’s 2013-14 Creative Workshop is “Art & Society”. We asked each of our artists to focus their creative workshop on celebration of the richness and diversity of how London, and in particular, East London has changed – politically, culturally and environmentally – over the last 60 years. Our hope is that every student, on completion of the workshop, walks away feeling more confident and inspired. This year, as in preceding years, our hope has been realised; the students have excelled themselves and we are delighted to share with you in this catalogue the discerning new works of the GCSE Art & Design classes at Bethnal Green Academy.

This is the tenth year that students from Bethnal Green Academy have participated in Artbeat.

“Artbeat” has been an exciting opportunity for our year 9 Art students and a great introduction to their studies in Art. This year in particular the students have not only had the opportunity to work with a professional artist and take part in an external exhibition, but they have learnt some valuable skills in using either oil paint or metal work skills. Alongside their final outcomes, the students have documented their design journey, starting with external trips in sketchbooks, to planning and experimenting with ideas; both will be a valuable addition to their GCSE personal portfolio. Bethnal Green Academy would like to thank Allen & Overy for its continued support in giving the students this unique experience.” Caroline Austin, Learning Manager for Art, Bethnal Green Academy

Bethnal Green Academy

Bethnal Green Academy (“BGA”) is a mixed inner-city school of around 970 students serving a diverse local community in Tower Hamlets and Hackney. Allen & Overy became a key business partner to BGA in 2005 and over time developed a unique partnership. Allen & Overy works closely with the Academy to support its continuing work to improve results, create an inclusive and welcoming learning environment, and to become a school of choice for the local community. This is now the tenth year in which Artbeat projects have been run at the school and offered to BGA students.

Artbeat Workshop: Art & SocietyArtist: Jacky Oliver

“The project has been a valuable experience both for those facilitating and participating in the project. The energy and enthusiasm that the students showed throughout has been an inspiration for me as a teacher and sculptor. Pupils were able to work with specialist equipment, learning techniques that could not have been introduced to them in school in normal circumstances.”

Jacky works as an artist/craftsperson, lecturer and artist-in-residence and facilitates workshops for participants of all ages around the UK. Working with others enables dialogue, interaction and participation with art, which informs Jacky’s work and allows it to develop in previously unexplored directions. Trained at The Royal College of Art and Middlesex University, her practice is focused on creating site specific pieces, ranging from small, intimate hand-held pieces, site-specific body works through to large-scale forged and welded architectural pieces.

Having lived and studied in London all her life, this project – “Art and Society” – was a great opportunity for Jacky to work with pupils from a school at the heart of the capital and help them to explore their perception of themselves, their community, and the local area.

The workshops introduced the pupils to a range of metalwork techniques through which they were able to creatively explore their ideas. The theme of the project, ‘Art & Society’, allowed them to look at their local community and consider how this might be represented visually with and on metal. For example, some students chose to look at modern maps of Bethnal Green, London or their family’s country of origin. Other students also considered how text and language is used in their community. Developing ideas and learning new technical skills was a challenging task but it was a challenge that the pupils rose to meet.

During the workshop pupils were able to see, first-hand, professional artists’ work and had the opportunity to visit the Tate Modern and Contemporary Applied Arts where pupils were able to view and discuss the work of both Fine and Applied Artists’ work. At the Tate Modern’s Mira Schendel Exhibition, pupils saw how the artist made use of a number of visual approaches to her work throughout her career, including in particular her use of expressive typography. A visit to the Contemporary Applied Arts Gallery allowed pupils to see examples of makers’ work in metal, ceramics, textiles and glass as well as an exhibition on model-making. This demonstrated how ideas have been developed by makers and architects using wood, resin and metal. Pupils had the opportunity to draw, make notes and take photos to help them reflect on the wide range of work at both galleries.

The pupils worked through a broad range of technical skills, including practising handling a piercing saw, which enabled them to cut intricate shapes from sheets of metal. They also practiced joining elements together using silver soldering in a controlled and precise manner in order to add a three-dimensional aspect to their work and playing into ideas about the layering of imagery and text.

Working with both sheet metal and wire, pupils gained valuable experience with using hand tools to manipulate forms and apply textures. The growing confidence that pupils had in their technical skills and their understanding of the properties of metal allowed them to grapple with the annealing of metal – heating it to soften it – which enabled them to make good use of letter punches. Adding to these skills, pupils were then introduced to different methods of preparing metal for acid etching. These methods were adapted for the classroom environment, where they were able to scratch expressive marks or carefully cut more controlled designs through a ‘mask’ to expose the surface of the metal, making it ready to be etched. Another process they enjoyed was researching photographic images, which were then printed onto special etching paper.

The pupils had the opportunity to express and develop their ideas individually, sketching plans and gaining confidence and knowledge in traditional metalwork techniques. These skills are not only relevant to those wishing to pursue a career in arts or craft; they also develop hand-eye coordination and provide experience working in a controlled, sensitive manner – all vital transferable skills in a wide variety of careers from surgery to engineering.

Artbeat Workshop: Art & SocietyArtist: Stuart Simler

Stuart’s early experiences as an artist were based around drawing – the idea of draftsmanship excited him, in particular its versatility and range of mark-making possibilities. From here, the natural progression was to paint. The resulting bodies of works consist of large-scaled canvases, canvas on board, or works created directly on to sheets of mild steel.

The latter, providing a tangible reference to work that responds to our urban environments. Stuart selects materials that reference other subject focuses, which stem from physicality and communicate his need to carve himself into the painting’s surface. The process begins with a physical experience through expressive mark-making and heavy bodied mediums: oil-based gels, encaustic, bitumen and silver sand. Working in this way he investigates a number of themes, which are often communicated through a figurative element.

The discovery of layering and then carving paint back to its origins is a constant source of enquiry within his work and is something used to explore on-going themes of memory, duality, journey and community – investigations informed by his travels around the world.

Working from his experiences and developing projects for diverse communities, Stuart progressed his practice by inviting schools and groups at roots level to take part in social interventions that would have a positive impact and offer opportunities for community cohesion.

Recognising the potential for this type of engagement and to reach a wider audience, he accepted a role as art consultant to work with the British Council on two International projects in China with Better Community, Better Life (BCBL 2010) and in India for the Youth Global Citizenship Summit (YGCS 2012).

Stuart continues to deliver sustainable art projects locally and across the Southern counties, and maintains a key role in the development of the art education programme at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.

“The students did extremely well to take on board some of the concepts of this project, especially given its nature. They weren’t just shown examples of artists who referenced society in their art practice, they were invited to become the artist and respond to their own environment. Working through the processes from moment of concept to point of completion the students of BGA and Artbeat embodied the ethos of practicing artists when responding to a brief.”

This year’s Artbeat theme of ‘Art & Society’ provided an excellent opportunity for the students of Bethnal Green Academy to share their thoughts and feelings about this part of London and what it means to be a part of such a vast layering of communities.

Interpreting this overarching theme I’ve included the working title of ‘Urbanism’, a title that fits well with the processes undertaken by the young artists. The project was kick-started by a day trip to the Stratford based site of Danes Yard – a local business of industry founded in the late 1800’s and home of the impressive landmark, Danes Yard Tower. This part of East London has seen substantial regeneration in recent years and the site has its own plans in place for more of the same – so how does the changing cityscape impact on us and in particular people living in the local area?

This was to be our underlying point of enquiry and as such required clear areas of creative investigation – an investigation that was site responsive in the beginning and one that would unfold as students developed their sense of identity alongside their understanding of technical processes. Therefore specific tasks were set out as a guide to help them inform their research; observing areas of the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ was one of these and was documented using digital SLR cameras and good old-fashioned workbooks. The students had also attended a presentation, prior to the visit, of artists whose work also responds to urban environments, such as Antonio Tapiês and Banksy. With these artists in mind our young artists

were able to gather visual information that referenced areas of dilapidation by photographing and drawing textural evidence, while newer builds were found to have cleaner lines and surfaces due to the types of materials used in modern day builds.

Urban living is fast changing and the impact it seems to have on us equally so – because of this I introduced the students to a different type of painting surface, mild sheet steel, which also provided a strong metaphor towards the subject focus.

Using oil paints for the first time, they explored different ways of creating low-relief, working with sand and oil based mediums to develop a textural base for their compositions. Through practical experimentations, students were able to visualise the contrast between textures and line and how these represented the regeneration of Danes Yard and other parts of East London.

The final task was to communicate how they felt about this and what it meant for them to have a voice. The only difficulty was finding a way of doing this. With few opportunities of expressing oneself nowadays being a young person with opinions and not knowing how to communicate them effectively can be challenging. Symbolism and stencilling were introduced to the group as a way of channelling their ideas of what they felt about their local community and how they saw themselves within it. Did they feel connected to it…?

“Arts education is very important, we want to broaden the students’ horizons – the more cultural exposure they have, the more interesting they become, the more they have to say and the more confidence they have. Without this exposure, the students go through school with less personality and less excitement about them. With art and music they flourish and have more to say and if they can produce fantastic artwork its’ great for their confidence and their future in art and design.”Richard Marston, Art Teacher

Enterprise Initiative

Over 12 weeks, Year 12 students from Bethnal Green Academy participated in workshops led by a professional enterprise consultant. Students took images and inspiration from Year 9’s Artbeat exhibition and formed two businesses. These sessions formed part of their Level 3 BTEC Qualification in Business Studies. By combining arts and enterprise in a more tailored way, we fostered creativity in young people and encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs.

In accordance with the BTEC qualification, the sessions focused on topics such as raising finance, writing business plans, legal and financial aspects affecting the start-up of a business and selling and marketing products. Specifically, this encompasses identifying target market and trends, setting development goals and understanding the skills and personal development needed to run a business.

“This was a fantastic project as it was integrated into the curriculum and gave learners a practical, vocational edge. Unit 36, Starting a Small Business, would have been distinctly abstract had it not been for Artbeat Enterprise. The project allowed all learners to achieve higher levels of attainment than they had previously achieved this year, and it really developed their soft skills, including presenting, team work and verbal communication.”Toib Olomowewe, Deputy Head of Sixth Form, BGA

Drawing Club

Artbeat Drawing Club was developed from one of the grass root aims, namely self-expression and confidence building through art.The drawing club provided a good introduction into Artbeat’s benefits for staff, targeting more of the A&O community directly, increasing awareness of Artbeat’s projects, whilst in turn creating a potential avenue through which we can bring more volunteers on board.

“It adds to the fabric of the firm, and turns it into a proper community.”

“Being part of the Artbeat Drawing Club pushes you to think differently and creatively, something I need to do more of for my day job. I think there are lots of useful skills one can keep developing through an arts programme”.

“If we challenge people to be creative then they may translate that into their work for the benefit of the business”.

Guy Noble

Guy is a full-time practicing artist and has been teaching drawing and painting at Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design since 2006. Guy has studied in Spain and Italy and exhibited internationally.

“Getting out into the world of big city business was always going to be a novelty. What surprised me was the way we could make the office space into a studio type environment very quickly and enabling a relaxed but exciting place to work. Less of a surprise but more impressive was the shear talent. Ok so they are never going to be the next Degas but the progress made was fantastically encouraging. This was one of the reasons I was keen to start these classes. There are a lot of people out there who have the potential not only to develop into quite accomplished artists but also find out about probably the most ancient yet timeless art forms known to man. All this is fun to be part of which is why I teach.”Guy Noble
