The President’s Address. I’d like to give everyone a warm welcome to a new year with Sutekh!

I’m Nathan, and I’ll be Sutekh’s president for this coming year. I am very passionate about all things tabletop and board game. My plan for the coming year is to reinvigorate the events we all love and bring new and (somewhat) experimental events into the fold.

If this is the first you’re hearing of me or the new changes to the year, not only have we now redone and improved the website, with up to date event times and locations but have brought a new set of One-Shot events for those who want to get in on some RPG games but don’t have enough time, and a whole set of events to help break down some of the more daunting elements of board games and TTRPG’s for those who are interested but don’t know how to get involved. We have a lot more in the pipeline, this is just a taste of all the new Sutekh offerings we are bringing to the fold.

If all of these changes seem a bit daunting don’t worry, as our mainstay Monday, Wednesday and Friday events are sticking around, and if anything improving slowly, as well as keeping some of our best one off events like holiday game sessions and camp.

Sutekh has been a great source of warmth and joy and games for me and I want to be able to spread our great community and the fun we bring to as many people as are interested. Never be afraid to chat to me at any event, or even if you bump into me elsewhere. I’d also like to give a pre-emptive thanks to our great exec team, as we couldn’t bring all of this to you all without their hard work.

In care and boardgames,

Nathan Corr

The first is Cosmic Encounter a game where you control an alien

race trying to establish colonies on your opponents planets. It’s a fast

paced game that can take anywhere from 30 min – 180 min

as you sway the balance of the galaxy this way and that.

The Red Dragon Inn is the second game we acquired in the semester break a favourite at last year’s board game camp. This is a fun card game where you try to be the last to leave a fantasy bar. On your turn your character will be drinking, gambling and brawling their way to the top.

New Games! Over the summer break Sutekh was able to get a few new games to add to our board game collection.

We also got Super Smash Bro’s, Mario Kart and Super Mario Party all on Switch for Mario Monday’s.

Library Update. Hey Sutekh! I know what many of you will be thinking; we have a library?!

We do! Sutekh has a collection of over 3000 sci-fi, fantasy, RPG rulebooks, non-fiction, comics, manga, DVDs, magazines and more! This collection is stored in the Cage, which unfortunately is not accessible to mere mortals (such as non-exec. Trust me, I tried. Why do you think I became librarian?).

So, in order to make the library more accessible to everyone, we have set up an online catalogue and borrowing system! In three simple steps, you can have access to nearly all the books in our library*!

Step 1: Fill out the patron application, online or by form. If you fill out the form online, it will automatically be sent to the library email, and I’ll be able to set you up with a login for the library website. The information from the form will be used to contact you about when your books are ready for pickup or due to be returned!

Step 2: Once you have your login, head over to the library website and pick out your books. You can put a book on hold, which will notify me, your omnipotent librarian. I will approve (or not) your hold, and get the book ready for pickup at the next Sutekh event.

Step 3: You will receive a message by your preferred contact method letting you know that your book is ready for pickup, and at which events you can access it. Show up to the event to claim your book from the Book Box, and feel free to stick around and play some games while you do!

For the links to the patron application and library website, head over to https://www.librarycat.org/lib/Sutekh_USyd

Disclaimer: Sutekh is not responsible for missed deadlines or any other forms of procrastination which may be caused by this awesome new access to books. Sutekh also claims no responsibility for your new inability to talk to people about anything except the book/series you just read. Please read responsibly. (Or don’t. I’m your librarian; I’m more like your dealer than the fun police.)

Best Regards,

Your Librarian

Jess

*Borrowing of DVDs and RPG rulebooks will be limited to in-event borrowing. You can ask to use a book at your event, but it must be returned to the Cage immediately after the event. If you want to borrow, say, a rulebook for a one-shot you are running through the society, please email [email protected] directly, and I will see what I can do. Magazines are not able to be borrowed at all, due to their fragility, but if you are interested hit me up and I’ll see what I can sort out.

USU Pop Fest.

September 11th and 12th 2019

Petra Player | [email protected]

The USU’s first ever pop culture festival, conveniently named PopFest, took place on the Wednesday and Thursday of Week 6, Semester 2 2019. Across the two days there was a huge range of competitions, events and activities for students to take part in, as well as numerous zones such as an Artist Market, Gaming Lounge and Expo Hall to be explored.

Amongst the stalls in the Expo Hall up in ISL, several societies including Sutekh set up displays and ran games and events to attract both new and old members. Dotted between the society stalls, companies such as Event Cinemas and Good Games, as well as groups such as SYDLUG, Sydney very own Lego Community, offered students the chance to explore beyond the university, as well as pick up some of their favourite products.

Around the Expo Hall were several activity areas, such as AEL’s Gaming Lounge, the Table Top Area with games donated by Good Games, and a Chillax Zone where students could create itty bitty pompom Pokémon, or add to the Scribble Wall created by local artist

Bunkwaa. Across both days, Incubate hosted several panels, including ones that featured past students, WomANZ, USyd’s resident celebrity scientist Dr Karl and Junkee’s previous editor Rae Johnston.

Down on Hermann’s Lawn, Sons of Obi Wan offered students the chance to learn how to use a light sabre, while on Thursday afternoon Ed Dyer created a large number of wonderful caricatures for students to take home. Hermann’s Bar was home to a number of events, ranging from club events such as Quidditch Club Trivia and FiloSoc Karaoke, to competitions such as Slam Poetry, USyd’s Got Talent and the Cosplay Competition. Finally, a showing of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse closed off the two days on Hermann’s grass.

So, what will PopFest 2020 include? This year’s PopFest aims to build on the success of last year, and bring new experiences for students to enjoy. We’ll be bringing back the JFR Artist Markets, expanding the Arcade Area, and AEL will once again be decking out the IGLU Space with their very own Gaming Lounge! Check out the details* and some of highlights overleaf!

An Elegant Solution. An Excerpt from a D&D Session

The first hint that something was wrong came when the ship’s sail seemed to flutter and contract, and with an almighty sound snapped free of its riggings and shrunk down to half its original size. It had been 2 days since the group had set out from the coastal city of Palken, on the continent of Vashet, and 2 weeks since their betrayal at the hands of Hellion, an Elven man who had manipulated them into furthering his own goals. Determined to track him down, the group had hired a ship to carry them back to the Windfall Basin and were making good time until they saw the other ship, lurking behind an island.

The captain stared dumbly at his shrunken sail for a few seconds as it fluttered to the deck. Hearing the commotion, the rest of the party scrambled topside. Without its sail the ship began to rock to a near halt. The other ship, now close enough for everyone to see clearly, began to leisurely creep up the starboard side of the ship.

Verwyn leaned over the sail and poked it with one foot. “Hmm, looks like it’s been shrunk with magic. They were probably waiting for a ship to come close enough that they could do this and then rob them blind. That's... pretty clever, actually.” The druid’s sleepy voice denoting no more emotion than a mild inconvenience as he continued to prod at the sail, which looked perfectly normal, aside from its new size.

“Hello there, crewmembers of this fine-looking vessel!” A voice boomed out from over the other ship. “As you can see, we have rendered you largely immobile, and as I say this, we are aiming our ballistae directly at you. Now understand that we would prefer that everyone sail away from this, so if you would simply place your cargo in a landing craft and set it adrift, then there will be no need for us to actually use force. You have one minute to decide whether we salvage your sunken ship, or we simply make off with your goods.”

The gnome Oranna, her Paladin armour gleaming in the mid-afternoon sun, turned to the captain. “You have replacement sails in case of emergencies, yes? How quickly can you get another one up?”

The captain shook his head slightly, his eyes never leaving the other vessel that was circling around to the front of the ship, and the nasty-looking ballistae on each side.

“We do have spare sails, but they take time to set up. During which, those pirates will be free to rain down whatever hell they want on us.” He gestured to the crew that were backing away from the railings. “We took you on board in case a situation like this developed. That said, I won't ask you to fight a battle you can't win. Can you fight them, or should we surrender our cargo?”

“Nah, screw that. I want these guys dead,” Rekkfist said, glaring at the ship as if by sheer force of will he could get it to come within his arms reach. In true Barbarian style, the half-orc had all his weapons already strapped on and within fist’s reach. “Well, if you’re sure, I'm going to get my crew below decks. You do what you need to do.” The captain turned to the open hatch that led below decks and, waiting for his crew, jumped down it and closed it after him. The party came to huddle over the shrunken sail. For all their bravado, they began furiously discussing just how exactly they were actually going to pull this off.

“None of my magic can reach that far, and I have no way to get us over there.” offered Marion, as she carefully sorted through her spell components and assorted witchy instruments. “If we are set on fighting these ruffians, then-”.

“We are,” Rekkfist interrupted. Marion glared until he stopped bouncing on his toes.

“-Then we either need a way to get them to come to us, or for us to get over there. Any suggestions?” Blank faces stared back at her, except for Verwyn who was still examining the sail. Dimly they heard a faint whistling noise, and as everyone looked up at its source a large ballista bolt arced towards them, crashing into the deck. Distantly, calls to reload and fire again could be heard.

“We could always just run straight at them,” Verwyn piped up, poking at the sail with a mild interest. Everyone turned to face him as another bolt soared overhead, this one missing the ship. “Uhhh, they’re across the water, and I can’t swim very well in this.” said Alice, her voice muffled as usual by the plague doctor mask she insisted on wearing.

“Well I can, and I guess by extension you guys as well if I want.” Verwyn straightened up and frowned at the confusion he was facing. He waved his hands, like he was lecturing a group of small children on something very obvious. “I’m M-a-g-i-c. If you guys want to just run at them, I can make that happen.”

Page 19: Artboard 1 copy 2@300xSure · your opponents planets. It’s a fast paced game that can take anywhere from 30 min – 180 min as you sway the balance of the galaxy this way and that

Rekkfist grinned and turned back to the pirate’s boat, “Oh, yes please.”.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a coin, flipping it as Verwyn straightened up and began chanting softly to himself. Rekkfist caught the coin against his palm and felt a warm pulse as the coin’s magic travelled down into his legs, mingling with the magic being cast by the druid.

“Here, this may help as well.” Marion threw something at Rekkfist, and when he caught it the small kitten looked up at him and mewed, before scrabbling up to his shoulder. “I shall stay here, but he will help in my stead.”

Marion looked around at her friends, as faint glimmers of magic began to cling to their bodies. “Anything else, or is that it? Are you sure your magic will work?”. This question was answered by the rogue Talon, in complete silence and with absolutely no hesitation, vaulting over the side of the ship. The rest of the party rushed to the side of the ship to see her sprinting full pelt over the shifting sea. Rekkfist grinned and with magic-enhanced legs, leapt over the ship's rail and began bounding after the thief, and the rest of the group soon followed.

Over on the pirate ship, two brigands were loading the ballistae for another shot. They'd been waiting for a ship like this. Hiring the mage to disable the sails had been pricey, but they'd make it all back with how easy he made raiding. One of them slapped down a bolt, then paused.

“Oi Brian, what do you think that is?” Brian tightened the winch that reset the bolt. “Dunno George. That looks a lil’ odd don't it? Almost like a man...” He squinted against the sun and peered forward. “Now that you mention it, it does seem to look like a person. Actually, it looks like a couple people. And a panther. And is that guy jumping?” George grew more apprehensive as he spoke.

Rekkfist, his jumping capabilities enhanced by his magic coin, crashed into the side of the deck, cracking the railing inwards and sending both men stumbling to the ground. He grinned maniacally, rage dancing in his eyes and, strangely, a kitten clinging to the top of his head for dear life.

“Now,” he said, hefting his axe and leering down at the two who had been thrown forward by the force of his impact. “Now the fun begins.”

Blasted Blood-angels. Below is a blood angels army list for a friendly

1500 point 40K game starting with 11 command

points and, some tips on how this army should be

played. This is designed to be an extremely

aggressive melee assault army, so don’t be afraid

to get up close and personal.

In turn one, use forlorn fury and upon wings of fire

to redeploy Astorath (after chanting his litanies) allowing

for an easy early charge. The new red thirst ability, as per

the blood of Baal supplement along with the canticle of

hate, makes long charges far easier now. The tactical

squads can use frag missiles to support death company

bolters to clear a space in a screen (in my case Fenrisian

wolves wrapping thunderwolf cavalry) allowing the death

company to charge easily and get an easy first strike and

destroy a key enemy unit.

The new stratagem allowing a 5+ wound shrug for death company makes their survivability

impressive, and the death company become a useful screen for Mephiston and the

sanguinary priest to advance up without trouble. The Sanguinary guard can be brought

from reserves with the Sanguinor on turn two or three depending on the course of the game,

the benefit of turn three being the ability to capitalise on the +1 attack in the assault doctrine.

Mephiston’s incredible mobility makes him ideal to tie up and damage enemy backline, in

my case Leman Russ tank commanders, all the while the scouts are free to gather board

control and secure objectives. The aggressive nature of this list makes it fun and engaging to

play, and really helps practice the importance of positioning, such as wrapping an enemy

unit to gain immunity in the shooting phase. I have really enjoyed playing and tweaking this

army list I hope you too can go out and enjoy it as much as I have.
