Barcelona is today one of the most active cultural centers in the world. Modernism was an artistic but also a social, historical and political movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The most renowned architects of the Catalan Modernism such as Puig i Cadafalch and Domenech i Montaner were also very active politicians and researchers in history and architecture of the past.

The modernist architects studied in depth Catalan Romanesque and Gothic Architecture which served as a source of inspiration for their works.

The architect Puig, one of which best represent the overall personality of the modernists, took part in the restoration of numerous monuments such as the Palace of the Generalitat, the Monastery of Montserrat and Sant Benet de Bages.

DIA 01We will visit the MNAC (Catalonia Museum of Art). In Barcelona we will visit some of the emblematic works of Modernism as La Pedrera, Casa Batlló and the Sagrada Familia. We will have lunch in a modernist Restaurant and in the evening we will go to the Monastery of St. Benet.

Barcelona is world famous for being a very active city in the cultural, creative and artistic field. It presents elements that combine and interact to chart its own style, but at the same time are cosmopolitan and international. In the past 25 years the city has become a reference for architects, designers, photographers and creative people from around the world. In addition to the works and heritage of artists such as Gaudí, Miró, Tàpies or Brossa, design is one of the Barcelona's main attractions. Design lovers will find museums, shops and buildings that are a feast for the eyes. This tour gathers together some of the main places that help to understand why Barcelona has become a city model and a reference for architects and designers.

DAY 01In the morning, visit the interior of the Disseny Hub. Then we'll travel by tram towards the Born district. Lunch at Cafè de la Princesa (included).Visits in the afternoon: Míriam Ponsa, Hotel Chic&Basic, Vitra Trespa /Arpa Design Center, MTX Mertxe Hernández, Cortana, Munich, Aro Vialis, Frederic Homs, Tascón and Joi d’Art, among others.

DAY 02We will start the day by visiting Paseo de Gracia street: shops as Vinçon or hoteles as the Mandarín or the Omm. Lunch (included) at the Cerveceria Moritz (Jean Nouvel).

In the afternoon, we will visit Gracia district, which seems to be a completely different world, with small shops and restaurants. The area is populated by artists and bohemian crowds, restaurants, cafes and shops of local designers.

Modernism is a cultural movement that had its heyday between the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century. It incorporated the most restarted trends in literature, theater, architecture, fine arts and decoration. As a style, it is characterized by the predominance of curved lines, asymmetry, the use of plant motifs and the fusion of the functional and the aesthetic. The movement received distinct names in different countries.

In Catalonia, the Eixample district of Barcelona became the most important "modernist" focus. In the field of architecture, the most important figures were Domènech i Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch and Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí is the most emblematic architect of the city and Barcelona would not be the same without his contribution. Its buildings are masterpieces that need to be admired.

The current architectural model is in crisis, both financially and conceptually. In this regard, the City Hall of Barcelona approved, in 2000, a new plan to transform the old industrial area of Poblenou into a center of new activity, converting the neighborhood into the experimental district of the 22 @ district planning ordering.

A new model of a compact city, where the most innovative companies coexist with research and technology centers, residential houses, facilities and green areas.

Integrated with the old industrial heritage, modern living energy networks, telecommunications, central air conditioning and selective waste collection coexist in the area. The design of these new networks prioritizes energy efficiency and the responsible management of natural resources.

Bilbao has undergone a major transformation in recent years. In addition to its famous Old Quarter (Casco Viejo) and its architectural richness in past centuries, in Bilbao there has been a major urban renewal in Bilbao and the work of leading architects that make the city an international cultural landmark.

From the arrival at the airport designed by Calatrava, Bilbao surprises us with its blend of tradition and modernity.

The modern underground designed by Norman Foster won the Brunel Award in 1998, while Frank Gehry's Guggenheim is the icon of the city and the reason for visiting for numerous architects and art lovers.

This route through the region of Girona brings us to a different way of understanding architecture and landscape interventions. With the theme of the work of the local studio RCR (Aranda, Pigem and Vilalta) we will travel to Olot and Palamos.

The landscape of La Garrotxa has a characteristic appearance due to its volcanic origin and beach that have served as inspiration for painters like Vayreda. The architecture also interprets and redefines the landscape of La Garrotxa with respectful interventions in the natural environment. Architecture that, in contrast with the place, intensifies its essence.

For 2 days we will dive into the landscape of La Garrotxa not forgetting, of course, the local cuisine, which also helps us understanding the territory.

In recent years, the large companies of wine from La Rioja have put great effort into renewing their wineries, in order to adapt the technology and space to the category of their wines.

The results are new buildings that combine functionality and aesthetics, always with wine as the protagonist. Some of the best known wineries have entrusted their projects to the leading names of contemporary architecture, such as Santiago Calatrava, Zaha Hadid or Frank Gehry.

However, La Rioja, with more than 400 wineries, offers a variety of architectural styles, from traditional, excavated in living hardwoods and stone, to the most functional.

In this two-day getaway we will visit buildings, enjoy the architecture and also the wine and cuisine of La Rioja.

DAY 02 We will wake up early to see the bull running of the San Fermines. Possibility of private balcony (ask for it), with privileged views of the streets where the bulls and runners pass through in a brief but intense race.

Giants and "big head" parade in the down town, and guided visits by an architect: Bastion (Patxi Mangado), Citadel, New Bus Station (Blasco, Tabuenca, Sagastume), CIVICAN (Blasco) and the Navarra University Campus with buildings by Moneo, Carvajal or Vicens.

Pamplona is internationally known thanks to the festival of San Fermines. Thousands of people come each year to experience the thrill of its popular bull running, immortalized by Hemingway in his book "Fiesta". For nine days, everyone dresses in white and red costumes, Pamplona inhabitants and outsiders are driven by the festive spirit that invades the streets of the city.

However, Pamplona is much more than that and it is worth a visit while enjoying the festival. Architecture and urbanism shake hands with folklore and it is possible to see the city in all its glory, when the streets are filled with visitors.

Santiago de Compostela, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985, is a city known worldwide. Its Cathedral has been the goal of pilgrimages for centuries. The weight of history and its reflection in the built heritage, however, has not prevented its evolution into the twenty-first century.

This modern city has opted for contemporary architecture with works by some of the best contemporary architects such as Siza, Heyduk or Grassi.

During this guided trip we can go deeper into the historical heritage and its management in the hands of the Consorcio of Santiago, and visit the most emblematic works of architecture of the past two decades, such as the City of Culture of Galicia, an architectural, cultural and amusement complex build by Peter Eisenman.

In addition to the large number of buildings that draw the heritage of the city, there are a number of contemporary buildings that have sparked the interest of architects during their trips to Seville.

In this guided trip we will visit sustainable buildings, such as the Center Palmas Altas (Richard Rogers), the Seville Sacred Art Business Park (Suarez & Santas Architects) and the offices building in Avenida Ramón y Cajal (Hombre de Piedra Arquitectos).

Seville has been shaped over the centuries by many cultures that have molded its present appearance.

The art of restoration is manifested in its architecture through its respect to the inherited values, the maintenance of the spatial richness and the historical memory. It has been updated from the contemporary point of view through new materials and concepts, compatible with tradition.

In addition, the city features many places where the Arabic influence is still very present. We find it in the city outline, in the atmosphere of the streets, and in its architecture, preserved and adapted to current needs.

We will find forgotten places, most of them ignored in tourist guides that, however, are pearls that help us understand and enjoy a magnificent hidden Seville.

DAY 01We will start our visit at Cordoba's Door. Then we will continue by the San Hermenegildo's Church, and we will see the remains of mural paintings from the Muslim city and the Arco de la Macarena. Tour through the historic center: Patio de la Iglesia del Divino Salvador and Judería's district (Santa Cruz). Murillo's and Buhaira's Gardens.

DAY 02We will start in the Monasterio de la Cartuja. We will visit the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage (Vázquez Consuegra) andthe Andalusian Centre of Contemporary Art. We will continue with the Andalusian Parliament (Hospital de las cinco llagas, 1546 and rehabilitated in 2003 by D. Martinez). We will visit the Indian General Archive. A look at the wine heritage. You will find modernist buildings that, by their unique characteristics, are authentic testimonies of an architecture where the function is combined with expertise in space configuration and a superb quality in execution.

Called this for its wealth of space and light, wineries designed by Cesar Martinell between 1918 and 1923 possibly are the most important agricultural works built in Catalonia.

The design and construction of this group of wineries, along with others, come from the short professional life of Martinell, but are the works for which he has been most valued and remembered.

They are real unknown pearls to be shown to architects today.

DAY 01We will start the day visiting the Medieval Town, its gothic churches and its renaissance palaces. Barcelona is more than just fashion. The city’s model is observed and analyzed by politicians and professionals from around the world. Sevilla conserves the charm of the cities with history, a fact that can be seen in the large number of buildings and monuments that are heritage in two of its most famous areas: Triana and La Macarena.

In a city like this, where Roman, Arab and Christian cultures have coexisted for so long, there are also many museums and cultural events.
