Two years ago, I started Artful Comics on a whim. To many, comics are all
about men in leotards and capes or girls with magical powers. At least this is
what I thought until a few friends recommended Blankets and Maus to me,
and I realized one Sunday afternoon what a comic could be. I have always
been a dedicated writer and, though my art supplies tend to sit neglected in a
shoebox in my closet, I have even been known to draw. Comics seemed like
a great combination of these two areas.
The idea that a graphic novel could have the same emotional impact

uncharted territory, which would explain why more colleges didn't have literary
magazines focused on comics, and I decided that Emerson should. Several
students got on board immediately, and their dedication and enthusiasm is
what kept the project moving forward. One of my most memorable moments
as Editor-in-Chief was watching these students, one after the other, speak
passionately to a faculty member about Artful Comics, this thing I had started
only months prior out of thin air, and realizing what it meant to them now.
I have had the pleasure of connecting a number of talented artists and
writers who went on to collaborate on projects we are all very proud of, and

I'm not sad to leave this organization because I know it is in the care of a
wonderful group of people.
