ARTHUR D. BUDD (1882-1965)
Lt. Col. Arthur Dryhurst Budd was born on 22 January 1882 in Meriden, Connecticut to Montgomery
Randolph Budd and Louisa Elizabeth Dryhurst Budd, who had four additional sons and two daughters.
Budd became a cadet at the United States Military Academy in 1900 and graduated in June 1904,
becoming Second Lieutenant of the 1st Infantry. During assignment in Panama, he earned a bachelor’s
degree in Spanish from Instituto Nacional de Panama.
Budd went to France in 1917 with the American Expeditionary forces and saw action near Chateau
Thierry in 1918 in the first encounter involving Americans. He served in the Meuse-Argonne
Offensive, making combat liaison with the 4th French Army under General Henri Gouraud, and
earning a Distinguished Service Cross for action near Grand Pré. He was the first person to enter
Les Petites Armoises, and his troops took Tannay in November 1918. A statue was erected in
Tannay in July 1921, recognizing the American liberation and Budd in particular. The plaque included
a relief of Budd, and a street in Tannay was named for him.

After World War I, Budd attended the Paris Peace Conference as technical advisor and delegate of
Panama. In 1923, he served as Aide to General Gouraud, accompanying him on a tour of the United
States. Budd lost his eye in an accident in 1930, but decided not to retire on disability so that he
would have the option of being recalled to active duty. He served as a military advisor during World
War II.
When Budd retired in 1932, he and his wife, Helen Gamwell Budd, moved full-time to Notchview in
Windsor, Massachusetts. Helen Budd had been born in Providence, RI, and graduated from Smith
College in 1887. She became a registered nurse in 1890 and was superintendent of Rochester City
Hospital, where she met and married Dr. William S. Ely. He died in 1912, and their son, William S.
Ely, Jr., who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, was killed in France in 1918 and was buried in
Oxford, England. She married Budd in August 1920 in London.
Helen Gamwell Ely had purchased 250 acres of land (the former Norman Miner Farm) in Windsor,
MA in 1909 and had rebuilt the old Miner farmhouse in 1914 into Helenscourt, a 24-room mansion
with terraced gardens modeled after Versailles. Over time, she and Budd increased the property, which they called Notch View Farm, to some 3,000 acres. Buildings included Gate Cottage, West
Cottage, an ice house, garage, workshop, hilltop reservoir building, sawmill, sugar house, several
sheds, and two small structures that housed fire hydrants and hoses. The Budds employed a full staff
to help them care for the property. Helen died in 1958.
In 1964, Budd married Dorothy Frances Whitney, the widow of Roy Foxwell Whitney, a pioneer in
the New England power industry. Budd died the following year, on 25 September 1965. He had
contemplated leaving the property to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or to the Episcopal
Church, but he decided to leave it to The Trustees of Reservations, along with an endowment. The
house (which was left to Smith College) and the extensive gardens were maintained as a residence
for Dorothy Budd. In 1969, The Trustees opened hiking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing trails
on the property. West Cottage was renovated in 1973 and opened as the Arthur D. Budd Visitor
Center.
After Dorothy Budd’s death in June 1985, The Trustees purchased the house from Smith College.
The contents of the house were auctioned off, and the gardens were removed so that staff could
focus their energy on aspects of the property other than yardwork. Over time, The Trustees
determined that the house required too many financial resources to maintain and offered a sum to
anyone who would move it from the property. Unable to find someone willing to move the house,
The Trustees paid the sum to the Cummington Fire Department, and in 1995, the house was burned
in a fire training exercise.
The Notchview reservation has become known for its cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PAPERS
The Arthur D. Budd Papers document the life of Lt. Col. Arthur D. Budd, who bequeathed
Notchview reservation to The Trustees in 1965. The papers, which span the years 1891 to 1964,
emphasize Budd’s distinguished military career; the bulk of the material is from 1914 to 1961. The
papers are organized into six series: Correspondence, Certificates and Awards, Commissions and
Discharges, Personal Papers, Photographs, and Other Papers.
Series I, Correspondence, is organized into two subseries: Professional Correspondence and
Personal Correspondence. The first subseries, Professional Correspondence, details Budd’s military
career, including the specifics of his travels. There are a number of letters from the War
Department, as well as letters from General Henri Gouraud and John Gort. There is also
correspondence regarding Budd’s discussions with the Episcopal Church, the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts, and The Trustees about the disposition of Notchview.
The second subseries, Personal Correspondence, consists of a few letters to and from family
members, as well as a number of letters regarding the gravesites of Budd’s wife, Helen Gamwell
Budd; her son, William S. Ely, Jr.; and her first husband, William S. Ely.
Series II, Certificates and Awards, contains many of the military decorations that Budd received from
foreign governments, as well as his Distinguished Service Cross award. There are also certificates
documenting Budd’s completion of Army General Staff College, Briançon Ski School, and Field
Artillery School, among others, and diplomas from Meriden Grammar School, the United States
Military Academy, and Instituto Nacional de Panama.
Series III, Commissions and Discharges, contains a certificate of discharge from the Connecticut
National Guard in 1900; certificates of commission from the United States Army from 1904 to 1928;
and a certificate of commission from the Centre d’Études Tactiques d’Artillerie in 1924.
Series IV, Personal Papers, is organized into two subseries: Arthur D. Budd, and Other People. The
first subseries, Arthur D. Budd, contains personal materials regarding Budd, such as his baptism card
and identity papers; biographical notes and clippings regarding his military career; background material
regarding his military awards; ephemera from Notchview; and materials regarding his affiliation with
the United States Military Academy.

Arthur D. Budd Papers - 7
The second subseries, Other People, contains the marriage certificate of Budd’s sister, Eleanor Maud
Budd; two poems written by Frederick F. Budd; and a 1956 copy of Helen Gamwell Budd’s birth
registration, as well as a blueprint for her cenotaph in Rochester, NY.
Series V, Photographs, is organized into five subseries: Arthur D. Budd, Other People, Notchview,
Other Places, and Objects. The first subseries, Arthur D. Budd, contains many photographs of Budd.
There are photographs of Budd as an altar boy in Meriden, CT; of his time at West Point; of him in
uniform from 1910 to 1951; and of him at Notchview, including a few that were probably taken
shortly before his death in 1965.
The second subseries, Other People, contains many photographs of Budd’s family, mostly taken
during a trip that his mother made to visit Budd’s brother, Harold Montgomery Budd, in Los Angeles
in the 1920s; in the background of many snapshots are views of home construction in their
neighborhood. There are also studio portraits of members of Helen Gamwell Budd’s family, as well
as various photographs of unidentified people, some taken in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s.
The third subseries, Notchview, contains various photographs of the outside of the Budds’ house,
Helenscourt, and of the grounds, including many aerials taken in the 1930s and 1940s.
The fourth subseries, Other Places, contains various scenes in France from the 19teens and 1920s, as
well as photographs of the gravestones and cenotaphs for Budd’s mother, Louisa Elizabeth Dryhurst
Budd; his wife, Helen Gamwell Budd; Helen Budd’s first husband, William S. Ely, and her son, William
S. Ely, Jr.
The fifth subseries, Objects, contains photographs of the Firmin Michelet bronze relief
commemorating the liberation of Tannay by Budd’s troops and photographs of a statue of Saint
Vincent of Saragossa.
Series VI, Other Papers, is organized into two subseries: Writings, and Subject Files. The first
subseries, Writings, contains three reports by Budd on his military work in France, including one on
his part in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. There are also some unidentified notes. The second
subseries, Subject Files, contains materials regarding the possibility of erecting a Connecticut
Battlefield Memorial in France; survey issues near Notchview; and Budd’s attendance at the Paris
Peace Conference.
