Appleton’s 25th Anniversary Gala La Belle Epoque…A Beautiful 25 Years in OcalaWithout a doubt, the highlight event at the museum in early 2012 was the Appleton’s 25th Anniversary Gala La Belle Époque…A Beautiful 25 Years in Ocala. On Jan. 28, more than 170 guests enjoyed an evening with a woodwind-serenaded cocktail reception, champagne toast and dinner in the Edith-Marie Gallery. CF students also performed music and staged “living art” during the evening.

The gala was a success with emcee Richard Kirk, son of one of the museum’s original trustees Jim Kirk. Among the attendees were Ocala Mayor Kent Guinn; CF President, Dr. James Henningsen; Linda Appleton-Potter, daughter of museum founder Arthur I. Appleton; and Congressman Cliff Stearns. Auctioned items included an oil painting by Gabriel Spat titled Grand Boulevard, a Thai dinner for 25 to be prepared by award-winning Orlando artist Ummarid “Tony” Eitharong, and three large vinyl prints of Appleton masterpiece paintings.

IT has been a year of transition for the College of Central Florida

and as the new president I am excited to be learning more about the Appleton Museum during my listening and learning tour. This year will also be a time of transition for the museum since our director, Dr. John Lofgren, has announced his retirement.

Dr. Lofgren will be moving to California to be closer to family. His last day is April 30 and we wish him well in his travels.

We appreciate all Dr. Lofgren accomplished during his tenure, most notably developing the application to meet standards of accreditation from the American Association of Museums. He also contributed to tremendous growth of the museum, including increases in membership and admission revenue, attendance at After Hours and SoundArt Music series events, participation in CF classes held at the museum, and more.

The nationwide search for a director will begin in May and I encourage you to contact me if you are interested in being part of the search process. Until then, the museum will be in good hands with Dr. Jillian Ramsammy as interim director.

Dr. Ramsammy, who most recently served as CF executive director of College and Community Relations, has a strong background in the arts. She was a museum educator for the Museum of Television and Radio in New York, program assistant for the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Lincoln Center Institute in New York, and chief of education and outreach for the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. At CF, she also served as director of the CF Hampton Center and manager of Cultural and Conference Centers, overseeing the Webber Gallery, Brick City Center for the Arts and Fine Arts Auditorium.

As Dr. Lofgren has said: come often to see and participate in the many exciting programs here at our “Masterpiece in Ocala.”

Sincerely,

JamesD.Henningsen,Ed.D.President,CollegeofCentralFlorida

The Young Shepherdess is in the SpotlightNear the end of the evening, the three large vinyl backdrops used for the gala’s “living art” were auctioned. The Young Shepherdess was purchased by Dr. Eydie Robacker who said, “We have the painting mounted on our living room wall so it is the first thing one sees as they enter our front door. We installed a ceiling spotlight to illuminate her in the evening. Spectacular!”
