When something is valuable to God, it has true worth and should be treasured by us. Because of what it meant to Him, Jesus Christ purchased the church by His precious blood. What matters to God matters to us.

The church consists of people who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ and now belong to Him. You cannot join the church like you join a health club; membership is acquired by being born again of water and Spirit. The New Birth experience begins when a person dies to their sins in repentance, and having faith toward God, is baptized in water by immersion in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and receives the gift of the Holy Spirit with the initial evidence of speaking in other tongues. (See John 3:3-5; Acts 2:38.)

I was born into a family that was a member of the body of Christ, the church! I was born on a Monday and went to church on the following Sunday. Because my parents were faithful and devout, I never missed a Sunday until the chicken pox forced me to stay home at the age of seven. My mom recently told me that I did not want to miss church and asked her to take me anyway. I planned to sit in the car with the windows rolled down to listen to the service. (In those days, there was no air conditioning at the church, and the windows were left open.) Our parents knew the value of church attendance. They did not forsake assembling with the people of God at church. (See Hebrews 10:25.)

We did not just attend church. Jesus Christ was at the center of our home. Because our parents were authentic Christians, my siblings and I did not resent the church. We fell in love with the Lord and His people at church.

What does the church mean to me? It was the place where I was saved at the age of eight. It was at church that my parents were grounded in principles that made for a sound marriage and family. The church was where I learned principles that have guided my life away from tragedy and toward blessing.

The church was also a place of friendship and fellowship. As I grew up, the life of the church was my life. Sunday classes, youth events, youth camps, and hang-outs with godly peers helped hold me steady through what could have been tumultuous teen years.

It was at church that I learned to cherish the Bible. The Word I heard was a moral compass when the world attempted to disorient and disillusion me. The church is where songs and sermons drew me to a place of commitment to Jesus Christ. When I could have lost my spiritual footing, going to church—the “house of the Lord”—helped me regain my balance and kept me on the right road.

It was because of the church that I met the godly and dedicated young lady who would become my wife. We were married in her home church where we made vows of faithfulness to each other in the presence of God, our family, and friends. Our three sons were dedicated in the church. The man of God in our life took our baby boys in his arms and presented them to the Lord. We took them home and endeavored to raise them according to the Bible, in the church. At this season of our lives, having a stable, sound church where our grandchildren can grow up and be saved means the world to my wife and me.

For the past twenty-two years, our family has been committed to Atlanta West Pentecostal Church, but we are not just connected to our church officially as pastor, wife, and family. This is our church home. This is the place where we love and are loved by our amazing church family.

The church is where mourners are comforted. The church is a sanctuary from the storms of life. The church is an anchor that keeps us from drifting. The church is a source of hope in times of despair. The church is where our giving gains eternal interest. The church is where our ministry gifts are utilized for God’s glory. God created the church as a community of believers, to share the abundant life together and enjoy Heaven forever. That, my friend, is what the church means to me.
