By the end of this session, you will be able to differentiate the structure, content, and purpose of Research Topics in eLibrary, select and utilize search options and results, and locate resources to enhance student research and educator engagement.

1.3 What is eLibrary?

Notes:

eLibrary is a vast collection of 100 percent full-text content from over 2000 magazine, newspaper, journal, transcript, and book sources. It includes over 7 million maps, pictures, weblinks, and audio and video files. Highly relevant material is organized into thousands of Research Topics pages. Curriculum standards aligned, and designed for research by students K-12 and beyond, it is available in both a student-friendly guided research application, as well as on the ProQuest academic platform. This session will look specifically at eLibrary on the Guided Research application.

On the main screen, research and educator tools are found on the upper menu, followed by keyword search functions.

1.5 Research Topics

Notes:

Under the menu on the upper left, eLibrary’s Research Topics are subdivided under searchable headings titled Common Assignments and Subjects, such as Careers, Environmental Issues, History, Science & Mathematics, and others. The lower section of the main screen titled “Need help choosing a topic?” provides a clickable visual representation of these same Common Assignments and Subjects. Each set of content is designed to make discovery and browsing quick and efficient.

1.6 Searching Research Topics

Notes:

Selecting a Common Assignment such as Historical Events, you will see a full list of historical topics. You may choose between sorting alphabetically, or looking first at the latest additions, or those which are most popular by usage. You may also narrow your list to more specific topic categories, such as Ancient World, or Middle Ages, and then navigate back using the available breadcrumb links. Clicking any image will return the Research Topic page.

1.7 Research Topic Page

Notes:

Research Topic Page content sections will vary with each topic. The links on the upper left jump down the page to each available section. The upper section provides you with an abstract and link to a full text article representative of the topic. The remaining sections subdivide the main topic and provide access to other full text material in eLibrary. For this page, you have a Background section, a Gallery of photos and links to articles about Selected Military Engagements, articles highlighting People of World War II, and additional articles and images on the Aftermath.

1.9 Search

Notes:

Search includes the Basic Search on the main page, as well as an Advanced Search. In Advanced Search, you may limit to a specified Source Type, Publication Date, and reading level, or Lexile Score. You may also limit your search to Primary or Scholarly Sources, or both. Using Primary and Scholarly together will provide a significantly narrowed search.

Limiting to Primary or Scholarly Sources only is also available after the search has been run.
