Editorial / Contents

After its being launched market, which lacked maturity at the time, in 2006, I am proud to have contributed, with help from my colleagues at La Rochelle and Kortrijk, to the development of this trend-setting product. Not only is it attractive and economical, it is in great demand for its ecological properties.

Today, at least 2 million square metres of gardens, balconies, terraces and spaces open to every type of event, boast the use of our artificial grass. Drawing on our extensive experience in dealing with artificial grass, it was logical for us to become a European scale manufacturer and we have no intention of stopping the process!

By setting up a strategy of an export strategy to England, Germany or Benelux, to name just a few, we hope to confirm our position as a European leader over the next few years. The challenge is a considerable undertaking, facilitated by our total control of everything, from product development to manufacture, including the yarn purchase and the assembling of the rolls and the pre-cuts.

Choice by aesthetics At first, you might think that there is not much to choose in terms of the aesthetics of artificial grass. Think again! Opting for artificial grass means that you can choose the colour you want. Like many seed plant varieties, there are many shades of green. For a more natural appearance, Exelgreen proposes 4 tones, varying from dark to light.

To make the right aesthetic choice, you should consider the shade of the grass in your area, or just think about the decorative aspect you want to give to your landscaping scheme, more or less neutral or impacting.

A soft touch is essential in the imitation of natural grass. It has that "feel good" characteristic associated with landscaped areas. The level varies according to the height of the grass but also depends on the profile and material used for the Jan.

The resilience of artificial grass guarantees that your investment will last a long time. It is evaluated according to the yarn, the weight and the coating of the artificial grass.

"Walk-on" comfort is an essential pleasure criterion for the user. This criterion depends on the density used in the design of your artificial grass. The higher the density the greater the agreeable underfoot damping feel you will get on every step you take.

PROOFVIA THE YARN

Your lawn design depends on the right yarn!The yarn is the leading component of artificial grass. It demands high technical capability, in terms of resistance to UV light and abrasion. Exelgreen's know-how enabled it to select the appropriate technology for each yarn, according to performance expectations.

Choice of materialThere are 2 main artificial grass yarn materials: polyethylene (PE) and the polypropylene (PP). PE is thought to be softer than PP. It offers high resistance to UV light and temperature variations. With a concern for quality, all our top yarns are of polyethylene (PE) in order to provide optimum softness. All our crimped yarns are of PP for better retracting and hold.

SUPERTOUCH GB 3820 is a fine and short yarn artificial grass with a particularly realistic look. Its height is 20 mm.

It is economic and particularly suitable for low-traffic areas. This lawn is ideal to set off green spaces and balconies.

SUPERTOUCH GB 3820 consists of a straight top yawn with two shades of green: pale green and a darker green to add relief to your artificial grass. The crimped yarn is green and beige. This artificial grass is light green, easily taken for a newly planted lawn.

Available in many hues, it consists of a two-tone C-shaped top yarn with two dark and light green shades matching each other perfectly. SHOP CUTTING SERVICE

Fire-proofing regulation The purpose of this regulation is to limit fire risks in Buildings Open to the Public (BOP). It requires the use of fire-rated products inside BOPs, that is, products meeting the requirements of the fire resistance standard. To be fire-rated, the products must be tested by an accredited and independent organization which issues a report. The safety commissions of the BOPs regularly inspect the reports to ensure that the installed products are compliant.

While most artificial grasses on the market have to be sand-filled or full-bonded, Exelgreen is the only company proposing a collection with free-laying BflS1 or Cfls1 fire classification.

Geotextile is material designed to protect your artificial grass from the aggressions of the ground. With 2 sizes available, this black geotextile will cover the biggest installations. Masking and anti-UV treated, it stops weeds or other unwanted from growing by stopping the sun's rays and preventing photosynthesis. Be assured, le geotextile allows air and water to pass through to preserve the right moisture level in the ground and ensure aeration. With the anti-weed geotextile, the tedium of weeding and the concerns about drainage will be a thing of the past!

If your artificial grass is intended for heavy-duty use, opt for the 20 m neutral joint tape. By far, it is the strongest way of making a clean and solid connection between two widths of artificial grass. The use of polyurethane resin is necessary with the tape; just mix the two parts of the glue and apply it to the 20 m long neutral joint tape with a toothed spatula (applying 250 g per metre; one 5 kg pot of glue corresponds to one 20 m long neutral joint tape). Using this 20 m long neutral joint tape, you minimize installation costs and guarantee that your artificial grass is not liable to come away.

Pre-glued joint tape (3 m and 10 m)

It is now so easy to install your artificial grass yourself, using the 3 m and 10 m long pre-glued tape rolls. This ready to use joint tape is an ideal solution for connecting two widths of grass and making your installation a permanent feature for many years. It is easy to use, offering very high adherence, dispensing with the need to use any special equipment or adhesive. Simply pull off the protective film from the adhesive side and apply to the widths of artificial grass. In a jiffy, creating a garden corner becomes child's play!

Two-part polyurethane resin (5 kg)

The two-part polyurethane resin we use attaches for once and for all the artificial grass to every type of surface: from concrete to tiles, and including stone and asphalt. If you need to cover a large area, requiring the laying of several widths of our artificial grass, a part of this polyurethane resin, used with neutral joint tape, will ensure successful joining and reduce the costs of the join. The glue is very easy to use, just mix the two parts, the hardener and the resin. All the equipment you need is a drill and a mixer attachment. Once the glue has been mixed, simply apply to a strip of joint tape with a toothed spatula. For optimal efficiency, we advise you lay the widths of artificial grass accurately before preparing the mixture. Then join them together. With a 5 kg package of polyurethane resin, your artificial grass is sure to stay in place for many years!

Galvanised staples (20 & 200 items)

The staples used for laying are essential accessories when artificial grass is laid on the ground. They are used during finishing, for attaching the various rolls to the ground. For secure attachment, it is advisable to place 1 staple every 50 cm, on the entire perimeter of the artificial grass. Galvanized staples (corrosion treated) resist the wear of time and bad weather, making them suitable for outdoor use. The lower section is sufficiently deep (15 cm) with a double anchor system to secure your grass to the ground properly. The upper section is almost totally concealed. Similarly, the ends are designed to facilitate driving into the ground and pierce the backing of the artificial grass without damaging it.

Shampoo (1l)Its 3 in 1 allows the disinfection, degreasing and deodorising of your artificial grass. After diluting it in water, just let the shampoo stand for no more than 5 minutes then rinse with clear water to remove all dirt. An easy way to recover a clean lawn!

Double-sided tape (10 m)

The 10 m roll of double-sided tape is ideal for the temporary attachment of your artificial grass. Unlike the polyurethane resin used for the final attachment of the installation, the double-sided tape allows you to remove the artificial grass if necessary. The principle is simple: one side is applied to the backing of the artificial grass and the other holds it durably against the ground. Attach to the perimeter of the installation for high stability and minimize the wind resistance. This 10 m double-sided tape can be used indoors and outdoors, by far the fastest and easiest way of attaching your artificial grass.

LAYING TIPMake sure that your artificial grass widths are laid in the same direction, preferring to lay the yarn tilting towards yourself.

Pay out the anti-weed geotextile felt to align it with the starting edge and assemble the widths, ensuring that the widths overlap by approximately 2-3 cm.

After covering the ground with a geotextile, pay out the widths of artificial grass, always laying them in the same direction.

Press down the grass. Cut the outer sections using a cutter. Repeat at each of the ends.

Place the 2 artificial grass widths along the joints and apply the 2 edges so that they meet accurately. If necessary, run a cutter between the 2 seams to maintain regular spacing. Ensure that the fibres are always laid in the same direction.

Press down the 2 widths which must join accurately.

Attach the artificial grass with staples for artificial grass.

For optimal results, brush the artificial grass using a stiff bristle broom (or a blower).

FINISHING

Run a brush or blower over the grass, moving it in the same direction on each pass.

If the coat is thin: break it with a small roller (not too heavy), then sweep up the pieces.

If the coat is thick: only specialized chemical products will be capable of quickly dealing with it. Remember to rinse off your lawn as soon as the weather permits, to eliminate any chemical residue and maintain it in top condition.

In all cases: never use calcium chloride, ammonium nitrate, ordinary salt, rock salt or any other corrosive or toxic products.

GUIDE TO CLEANING

As a general rule, artificial grass shampoo is the best cleaner. It removes dust, pollen and pollutants carried by the air. If you want to your grass, use clean water spread evenly and dampened without saturating it with water; never use water from a polluted source.

GUIDE TO REPAIRS

REPAIR TO JOINTS OR TEARS:

A detached seam or a tear less than 20 cm long are minor accidents if they are dealt with quickly. To do this:

Carry out repairs in dry weather.

Vacuum clean the area to be repaired: the backing to be repaired must be free of sand, rubber, mud, glue and any other unwanted materials.

Clean the area.

Cut a piece of Exelgreen pre-glued joint tape to exactly the same width is the area to be repaired.

Apply the pre-glued joint tape under the artificial grass.

Maintain pressure on it to ensure good adherence.

REPAIRING CASES OF CIGARETTE BURNS

Cigarette burns harden the burned area causing the fibres to melt. To repair damage:

Use a wire brush and brush energetically to separate the fibres.

If this is not enough, carefully shave the molten area using a simple razor, then brush.

HOW TO READ A TECHNICAL DATA SHEET?

Top yarn structure: Tells you about the top yarn profile used.

THE YARN

Gauge (e.g.: 3/8’’): This is the space between two rows of yarns. The gauge is calculated in inches (1 inch equals 2.54 cm). It is expressed by 8 or 16 lines of tuft yarn, indicating the number of stitches used in manufacture. A 3/8 artificial lawn means that you have 8 rows of yarns over 7.62 cm (3 x 2.54) or one yarn every 0.95 cm.

Nbr points (e.g.: 21/10 cm): Indicates the number of points or stitches over 10 cm.

Number of tufts per sq m (e.g.: 18,000): This is the number of stitches per square metre. It is not the same thing as the number of tufts. One tuft contains several tufts of artificial grass.

Weight of yarn (gr/ sq m) : Indicates the weight of the yarn alone.

Yarn height (e.g. 20 mm): Indicates the yarn height alone in millimetres In accordance with the textile product regulations, there can be a + or - tolerance.

CONSTRUCTION

First file (e.g.: glass fibre stabilised for UVs): Consisting of 1 or 2 layers, it is generally made of a woven polypropylene backing stabilised for UV exposure. This first backing is used as a support for the artificial grass tuft.

Coating (e.g.: Latex): Coating consists in covering the first backing in order to artificial grass yarns. The 2 main coating materials are latex or polyurethane.

Total weight (gr / sq m): The total weight combines the weight of the yarn, the weight of the first backing and the coating. It is important to bear in mind that it is not the total weight of the product which defines the price but the weight of the yarn.

Roll width (m): Indicates the various available roll widths. In accordance with the textile product regulations, there can be a + or - tolerance.

THE FINISH

Water permeability (e.g: 60L / min / sq m): Indicates the quantity of water that the artificial grass will allow to pass in 1 minute for 1 m2. Generally, tests are carried out without a sand-fill in the grass (not weighted).

Pile anchorage (e.g. greater than 30 N) This strength is indicated in Newton and gives the resilience of the pile to being torn away and the strength of the backing. 1 Newton = 0.1020 km-force, accordingly a product whose pile anchorage is greater than 30 Newton can tolerate tension of more than 3 kg.

UV Stability (e.g.: 3,000h UVA): This test measures the impact of UV light on the artificial grass in the course of time. These laboratory tests are used for performing accelerated quality inspection on materials without having to run outdoor tests for 5 or 10 years.

TESTS

Yarn composition (e.g.: PP or PE): Tells you about the yarn composition and the polymer used for manufacturing it.

Dtex (e.g.: 6,600 g): This is the weight in grams for a 10,000 m length of yarn. A dtex of 5,500 g means that the yarn used weighs 5.5 kg every 10,000 m.
