ARTIST LATIFF MOHIDIN BRINGS “HARMONY” TO DUO

Among a series of artworks by leading Singaporean and Malaysian artists, commissioned to grace the public spaces of DUO and Marina One, is “Harmony”, a 9-metre tall sculpture created by Latiff Mohidin, one of Malaysia’s most celebrated poets, painters and sculptors.

Designed to be the focal point of DUO’s Central Plaza at the heart of the development, “Harmony” is a freestanding modern sculpture crafted from stainless steel. Its minimalist form casts a strong visual impact that holistically complements

DUO’s architecture in its materiality and design. Inspired in nature by the interlocking leaves in plants, the sculpture symbolises the harmonious relationship between the states and the people of Singapore and Malaysia.

Its creator, Latiff Mohidin, is considered a national treasure. Born in 1938 in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, he earned the nickname “Boy Wonder” at a young age, after presenting his first solo exhibition at school. He received his art education at Hochschule for Blidende Kunste in Berlin in the early ‘60s, followed by further studies in Paris and New York. Upon returning to Malaysia thereafter, Latiff soon established himself as a modernist painter, with notable works including his primitive Pago-Pago series and his more contemplative and abstract Mindscape series.

This latest work of art will serve not only as the centrepiece of Central Plaza, but also as an enduring work of excellence to be appreciated by everyone living, working or enjoying life in the vicinity of DUO.

At its strategic location in Bugis, DUO is taking the lead as the catalyst for URA’s transformation of the Ophir-Rochor corridor into a vibrant mixed-use district, bustling with offices, hotels and residences within a park-like, pedestrian-oriented environment.Singapore’s next live-work-play-stay hot spot in the heart of the city.

Boldly breathing life into this vision, DUO is the largest integrated development in the area, bringing together Grade-A offices, luxury residences, a 352-room hotel and a retail plaza in one dynamic mix.

DUO’s iconic Ole Scheeren design will be the defining landmark in the district. Its sweeping concave shapes and hexagon-patterned façade blend influences from the area’s rich heritage and the gleaming modernity of the nearby Central Business District to creating a stunning silhouette.

Designed to accentuate DUO’s unique architecture at night, both towers will be illuminated with dynamic kinetic lighting that combines light with movement, adding striking vibrancy and colour to the city skyline.

In harmony with this, its public courtyards and plazas recreate an environment that is reminiscent of the heydays of this charming district, destined to make DUO a vibrant meeting point in itself, as well as a nexus for the community.

The development will also be directly served by the proposed North-South Corridor, which will facilitate the movement of not only vehicles, but also cyclists and pedestrians, with tree-lined footpaths and cycling lanes in the vicinity, and connectors extending to the north and south from Rochor Canal.

COVER STORY CONSTRUCTION DEVELOPMENT

DUO SCALES NEW HEIGHTS

The rooftop of DUO Tower, the development’s office building, was the fitting venue for DUO’s topping out ceremony, a historic occasion that signified the beginning of the transformation of the Ophir-Rochor district.

Sited at the axis of Ophir-Rochor’s rich heritage and exciting future, DUO is set to inject greater vibrancy into the entire area, elevating it into a premium city destination. “We look forward to welcoming global multinational occupants, residents and hotel guests through our doors, and I am proud that DUO has done well to attract concepts new to Singapore, including the first Andaz hotel in Southeast Asia,” said Ms Kemmy Tan, M+S Chief Executive Officer.

Aside from being the tallest and the largest integrated development in the Ophir-Rochor precinct, DUO is considered an engineering feat where its office tower features a 20-metre cantilevered section, the longest in Singapore, spanning from the 15th to 25th floors. The residential tower will have a smaller cantilevered protuberance of up to 13 metres from the 22nd to 50th floors.

* 94% of residential units sold. Limited Premium 3 & 4-bedroom units and penthouses on high floors available.

MARINA ONE SECURES STRONG LEASING COMMITMENTS

While celebrating its topping out, Marina One also announced it has secured strong commercial leasing commitments.

“We are pleased to secure strong office leasing pre-commitments of over half a million square feet, details of which will be announced soon. These are some of the largest office leasing deals in 2016 and we continue to be in active negotiations with many other multinational companies who are looking at securing office spaces over multiple floors.

Prospective tenants are taking this opportunity to move into Marina One as it is the only new integrated development in the prime Central Business District that offers excellent connectivity, efficient floor plates, and lush green biodiversity at the heart of the development,” said Ms Kemmy Tan, Chief Executive Officer of M+S.

Meanwhile, at Marina One Residences, up to 90% of released units for the first tower have been sold to date. The next phase of the residential units will be launched after the development receives its Temporary Occupation Permit (TOP) in 2017.

DUO’S ROLE IN REVITALISING THE OPHIR-ROCHOR AREA

THE CITY’S NEW CAPITALS TOP OUTDUO and Marina One officially topped out in May and June 2016, and their respective tower superstructures have reached the roof levels with work continuing on to complete the finishing works along with the installation of furniture, fixtures, and equipment, marking an all-important milestone on their path to reshaping the city skyline. Both Marina One and DUO remain on track for completion in 2017.

DUO’s topping out ceremony was officiated by (left to right) M+S Board Member, Wen Khai Meng; M+S Chairman, Tan Sri Azman Yahya; Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer, Obayashi Corporation, Makoto Kishida; and Managing Director, Obayashi Singapore Private Limited, Aik Seng Lee.
