1 Usage

ArtistaGUI is a human machine interface board that allows users to facilitate TFT-LCDs in

their electronic or electromechanical systems in an interactive manner.

End-user interacts with the ArtistaGUI using LCD - touchscreen pair and ArtistaGUI relays

these inputs to the target system using some signals and communication protocols.

Additionally, target systems transmit their outputs like warnings and messages to

ArtistaGUI. ArtistaGUI draws these messages onto the LCD. Therefore it acts like a medium

interface between the end-user and the target system. Main idea behind that is the

abstraction of target system from LCD driving and touchscreen handling.

Almost any microprocessor based system with a RS-232 connection can host colorful TFT-

LCDs and touchscreen pair using ArtistaGUI. This allows being able to design lower

complexity control systems. Moreover, ability to deploy colorful TFT-LCDs on already

designed systems. All of those yield faster time to market.

ArtistaGUI is a flexible control unit. It supports several TFT-LCDs from 4.3” to 15” size and

from 480x272 to 1024x768 (XGA) resolution.

5.4 Data Connections

5.4.1 MicroSD Card (CON6)

MicroSD card connector is used for mass storage needs and production needs. It is also

the default transfer medium for GUI configuration files and user Images.

Connector: Nexus 0203FR . It has pin connections as defined in the publicly available SD

Card standard files.

5.5 Target System Communication Connections

5.5.1 RS-232 (CON17)

There are two RS-232 connections on the board. One of them has all signals other than

Receive (Rx) and Transmit (Tx) pins and with the Isolation and translation layer. Second

one has only Receive (Rx) and (Tx ) at TTL level. For connections of the second channel

please see the table in Section 5.6.1

RS-232 connection is the main communication between the ArtistaGUI and target system.

That is because ArtistaGUI sends and receives events and actions from target system

through RS-232 connection. Protocol of this RS-232 connection is Modbus RTU. For more explanation of Modbus RTU please see section 10 MODBUS RTU - RS-232 SERIAL PROTOCOL.

5.5.2 I2C (part of CON15)

There is an I2C connection on the board. It is only a Master connection with 3.3 Volt. So

that communication can only be initiated by ArtistaGUI and target system can use one of

the GPIOs as an Interrupt input so that it can make ArtistaGUI to initiate a

communication. It can be used to further add components to the ArtistaGUI system.

For connections please see the table in Section 5.6.1

Page 14: ArtistaGUI Datasheet VX.X...20.06.2012 1.8 Added more details about AR-02-181 25.06.2012 1.9 Added connector descriptions & set GUI Design section referernce to the “Programming

5.6 Control Connections

5.6.1 GPIOs (part of CON15)

There are 8 GPIOs on the ArtistaGUI Board. End user customization can allow deciding

between input and output. They are 3.3Volts. 4 of the 8 GPIOs which are selected to be

inputs can also be used as Interrupt inputs. These GPIO connections allow ArtistaGUI to

control several other attached devices and components.

measurements and triggering actions.

For connections please see the table in Section 5.6.1

5.6.3 PWM – Optional (part of CON15)

There is an optional PWM output on the board. PWM signal can be used as a control

connection to target system. Duty cycle steps and frequency are configurable. However

PWM signal and backlight dimming cannot be used at the same time.

For connections please see the table in Section 5.6.1

9 GUI Design

ArtistaGUI uses the powerful Qt cross-platform application framework for GUIs. It also has

QtQuick Libraries and QML for defining and storing GUIs. Qt is a widely used framework

for designing mostly GUI based Applications. QtQuick is a library add-on to Qt. It allows

dynamic user interfaces using a declarative language QML. These technologies allow

ArtistaGUI users to use a visual design tool QtCreator.

Figure-3: A visual GUI design demo on QtCreator

QtCreator is a WYSIWYG tool for designing Qt Applications and GUIs. GUI design flow for

the customer product will be done using the QtCreator. QtCreator instantly translates the

visually designed GUI into QML. Also anything written into QML file with proper QML

syntax is directly shown on the visual design part.

Figure-4: QML code automatically created on QtCreator (Same application on Figure-3)

User only has to upload this QML file and Image files into the ArtistaGUI board using

microSD card

Please refer to our “Programming Manual” for more details about programming the

ArtistaGUI.

10 Modbus RTU - RS-232 Serial Protocol

Modbus is an open and license –free specification. It is a well-known, industry standard

especially in Automation industry and available more than 30 years. It defines a framing

and messaging scheme for RS-232. Complete specification can be found on

http://www.modbus.org/specs.php . Good overview can also be found on

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modbus

Target system will be a modbus slave to ArtistaGUI and only “Read modbus registers” and

“write modbus registers” operations are used.

11 Boot-up time

ArtistaGUI board has bootloaders and an embedded Linux kernel running on it.

So boot-up requires around 30 seconds.

12 Firmware Upgrade

Firmware upgrade of ArtistaGUI is done with MicroSD card interface. Kernel, filesystem

and user defined files like pictures and GUI files are uploaded with MicroSD card interface.
