He finished four novels: This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby (his most famous), and Tender Is the Night. When consumerism, reckless self-advance-ment, and profits are worshipped, can any of us come out clean?

Gatsby’s world is set in the seductive glamour and glitz of 1922 America. These characters are swept up in the Jazz Age, an era of rapid cultural change, rampant consumerism, and moral ambiguity. The accepted practice of ignoring prohibition blurs the line between right and wrong, and the get-rich-quick stock market rewards reckless investment. Money and alcohol flow, and life can now be bigger and brighter than ever dreamed, so everyone set about chasing their version of the American Dream. Some want beauty, some wealth, some sex, some prestige, some love, but everyone is out for something.

The story’s ambivalent attitude toward wealth and glamour reflects author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s own struggle. Born into humble beginnings, Fitzgerald never felt entirely accepted by those born into money. His first love, Ginevra King, the daughter of a wealthy Chicago family, broke off her relationship with Fitzgerald for a rich and reliable match. His next love, the flapper Zelda Sayre, refused to marry him because of his financial instability. In response,

Fitzgerald focused on writing a novel that would bring him financial success, and when Scribner’s decided to publish that first novel, This Side of Paradise, his marriage proposal to Zelda was immediately accepted. The novel sold well, and Fitzgerald was granted admittance to the world of wealth. He spent several summers with Zelda on Great Neck Long Island running with a fast and rich crowd. He struggled to find his place in a society built on appearances, and that experience fueled the conflict and questioning at the heart of The Great Gatsby.

All the characters of this story are skilled at creating worlds around them that fit their version of reality, but none is more committed to dreams than Jay Gatsby. He is master of illusion, and, like other gifted magicians, the “Great Gatsby” creates a beautiful world of deception. His blind commitment to the rags-to-riches American Dream betrays him. Even the most pure-hearted idealist gets sucked into the cogs of the machine that forces individuals to be blind to the inconsistencies and failures in their own lives. In this dystopia, the audience and characters yearn together to find moments of authenticity in a world defined by illusion.
