JURIED ARTS COMPETITION Second Annual Arts Country
OxfordCounty
Oxford is a county where art meets agriculture, history meets nature, and where highways 401 and 403 meet. Straddling Canada’s busiest highway, at the centre of many southern Ontario attractions, we’re the perfect overnight hub. As you’ll see from our “creative spirits video” on www.tourismoxford.ca, we’re eclectic by nature…
Shop for world-class original art in one of our studios or arts centres. Tour our lighthouse gallery, housing a collection of original religious artwork from around the world, and once taught at the Stu-dite monastery here.
Tour Amish countryside on backroads where large commercial farm operations are intermingled with horse and buggies, inside one of the largest Dutch communities outside of Holland.
Visit a local farmer’s market, or explore our stately public buildings, Victorian museums, and beautiful public gardens. You’ll soon see why we won the “International Communities in Bloom” title. Photographers love it here, and return year after year.
Eat some great local food as part of our Oxford Fresh program (www.oxfordfresh.com). Stay overnight at a country inn and spa, bed and breakfast, or local hotel and find out why there were close to one hundred cheese factories here during the 1800s. Dine in our famous 1800s barn and dinner theatre, and enjoy top-notch music and comedy.
If shopping or destination golf is the order of the day, you won’t be disappointed. Hike our trails and birdwatch, or capture images to brag about. Launch your canoe or kayak in one of our lakes or streams.
Our black cemetery and nearby Quaker museum are throwbacks to stories from yesteryear. One of our museums tells the story of the nearby location of the first recorded baseball game. Each year we welcome visitors from the Taiwanese community who travel to Canada to visit the birthplace of one of their national heroes. He was born here, and his legend lives on beyond the 1800s.
Visit www.tourismoxford.ca or give us a ring at 1-866-801-7368. We’ll fill in the names and places of some of the experiences listed here, and tell you about many more reasons why we’re a great place to visit.

Artist Martha Hofstetter has loved drawing and painting all her life. She studied advertising art at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art, and taught art classes for many years. Martha has travelled across Canada, painting the diverse landscapes, most notably Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia. Her love of gardens and flowers, especially Trilliums, shows in her art. A permanent gallery of her original works hangs at the village of Winston Park in Kitchener.
Gary began his playful journey with colour and movement in the 1980s and has been having fun ever since. He relishes the surprise that comes when a piece is complete and unplanned images emerge. His original acrylic work is non-objective in nature with a stroll toward abstraction and has been described as lyrical. Studio open year round by appointment and during the Oxford Studio Tour the first weekend in May.

studio Deb Beard9
41 Bridge St. W, Tillsonburg | 519.842.6151 | [email protected]
The range of form, colour & texture that can be created in clay is ever emerging. I still smile quietly to myself when I examine what is now the finished piece- all the nuances- from simplistic & subtle, to a riot of colour. The general understanding of the media doesn’t always explain those wonderfully unexpected consequences from when I first envision the work to its outcome. It continues to challenge and teach me. Work available at the Station Arts Centre.

MiddlesexCounty
Explore, Learn, and Experience in MiddlesexBy Rachel Robson, Marketing Coordinator, Tourism Middlesex
Middlesex County is steeped in local history. With a number of local museums, War of 1812-1814 celebrations, studio tours, and fantastic rural art, there’s something interesting to experience and learn about each community.
From painters, potters, and sculptors, to glass cutters, jewelers, and weavers - Middlesex’s collection of artists and artisans is growing. In the summer of 2012, Tourism Middlesex collaborated with local artists and artisans to create a brochure showcasing all of the studio locations throughout Middlesex. For more information, visit www.tourmiddlesex.ca/experiences/arts.
Using fabric, film, paint, and pen, local citizen’s service clubs, schools, and businesses have created a monumental project that crosses boundaries in the beautiful rural areas of Middlesex County. From the County of Middlesex to Chatham-Kent along 65 km of the Longwoods Road (County HWY #2) lies the Longwoods Barn Quilt Trail, an “art corridor” created to commemorate the War of 1812-1814.
There are many other barn quilts located throughout Middlesex. The Village of Ailsa Craig has taken a unique approach and created a series of “murals” that depict the town’s history. Visit the Lion’s Park in Ailsa Craig to see additional quilts throughout the park.
Just South of Strathroy is the area of South Caradoc where you will find the Native Women’s Quilt of Tears and the South Caradoc Barn Quilt Trail. You’ll find individual barn quilts at various business establishments and parks including Heeman’s Strawberry Farm and the Fanshawe Pioneer Village.
In addition to the barn quilt phenomenon, there is an annual event entitled the Ailsa Craig Community Quilt Festival, which hosts and showcases different countries each year. In 2013, they will be hosting “The Quilts of Israel.”
For more in-depth information on the Barn Quilts located within Middlesex County, visit our website:www.tourmiddlesex.ca/experiences/barn-quilts
Discover local history by visiting one of the many local museums, or exploring the Middlesex County Heritage Trail. For more information, visit www.tourmiddlesex.ca/culture/museums or www.tourmiddlesex.ca/visitor-info/maps-guides

Victor had been a professional photographer for 20 years, Living on the Ausable River Cut near the Pinery Provincial Park in southwestern Ontario, for 25 years, he had a near-perfect back drop for portraits. Being an avid boater on Lake Huron sparked his interest in nature and landscapes. Victor picked up a paint brush and converted an easel that held photos into his new support for canvas. He paints in both oil and acrylic, from his studios in both Strathroy and Grand Bend. Also on this web site www.victoralderson.com are some of Victor’s other works: Lake Huron driftwood ships, and award-winning photography.

A Newcomer’s Perspective on the Art of Norfolk Countyby Carrie Kitzul
When I moved to Simcoe from London, Ontario in September of 2012, I was surprised by the vibrancy, diversity and robust health of Norfolk County’s arts community. Having grown up in rural Saskatchewan, it did not conform to my experience of culture in a rural community. Though thriving and diverse, the creative community in Saskatchewan has a much different character that is defined as much by its vast, and often isolated, geography as its economic, social, or political environment. Yet, it is also the geography of Norfolk County that has shaped its arts community in both overt and covert ways. For instance, consider how the rural and agricultural roots of the community are communicated in the works of Silver Hill artist, Jonas Stonkus, who manipulates the detritus of tobacco farm machinery into sculptural form. And while the rural nature of Norfolk County has provided an artist like Stonkus with both the materials and space to produce his work, the close proximity of neighbouring towns facilitates access to all that the arts community has to offer. The Norfolk Studio Tour is a perfect example of how, in the quest to visit every studio possible, one can traverse the County from Port Ryerse to Windham Centre in just one day, and in doing so visit potters, painters, and photographers. Though people from this region may not recognize it, this is something unique for a rural community, and has no doubt contributed to the distinctive character of the arts community in Norfolk County.
A vital component of said arts community is the public art gallery – the Norfolk Arts Centre. The Norfolk Arts Centre is Norfolk County’s only public art gallery. It is defined as such by its mandate to collect, preserve, present and interpret works of art from the past and the present; it maintains a collection which it holds in public trust for the benefit of Norfolk County and its development. To me, this means that the Norfolk Arts Centre plays an important role in the community that extends far beyond the exhibition of visual arts and preservation of artworks. Indeed, it performs a significant pedagogical function that contributes to the understanding and appreciation of the visual arts, the psychological well-being of the community, and the economic development of the arts and culture sector and all their private sector partners.
There are a number of ways that the Norfolk Arts Centre meets the needs of the community in these areas. Through its education and public programming the Arts Centre is a primary provider of visual arts education for children, youth and adults in the community. Hundreds of children with an interest in the visual arts further their understanding of aesthetics and creative production every year through programs such as Summer Arts Adventure. This is important at a time when visual arts education is all but absent in many schools. Through co-op, volunteer, and summer employment opportunities youth learn about the daily operations of a public art gallery, collections and arts management, and education programming, and in doing so, develop both life and employability skills. And where else in Norfolk County can adults of all artistic levels take a life drawing class that uses live models? It is important to note that local instructors are employed to deliver the wide variety of programs that the Norfolk Arts Centre run each year. And in this way, the pedagogical function of the Arts Centre is also inextricably tied to the economic well-being of the County and its artistic community.
It is rare that a rural area is the beneficiary of an arts community as dynamic and accessible as that found in Norfolk County – be it in the form of a Jonas Stonkus sculpture, a cross-county tour to various artists’ studios, or an exhibition at the Norfolk Arts Centre. This is something that Norfolk County can be proud of.

Whimsical in spirit, my artwork almost always depicts some aspect of the natural world and its iconic subjects re-create with colour, line, shape and texture. Most of the work I do is mixed media; building layers of paint, papers, mediums and found items on canvas or paper. Sometimes poetry, lyrics or phrases are incorporated into the work. It is intended that my artwork impart a sense of the beauty and mystery of nature, or the human condition; and that the little stories that exist within a peice might give viewer some pause for thought, reflection or amusement.

Arts Country Gallery opens in Port DoverBy Adam Veri
Artists throughout the South Central Ontario Region (SCOR) have a new, permanent home. Opening in May, 2013, the Arts Country Gallery will feature exhibitions that bring many of Ontario’s finest artists together in an extension of Arts Country’s collaborative, regional marketing partnership.
The gallery is housed in Port Dover’s historic Old Town Hall, better known as the home of the nationally-recognized Lighthouse Festival Theatre. The gallery is located inside the street level lobby, which also serves as the theatre’s box office and receiving area. Regionally-created artwork will be displayed against the more than 100-year-old red brick walls of the designated heritage building.
The theatre’s box office has long featured artists with a Norfolk County connection, typically through residency. The new Arts Country partnership will open the exhibition space to artists from throughout the SCOR, which includes the counties of Brant, Norfolk, Oxford, Elgin, and Middlesex. Artists who participate in their respective county’s studio tour and appear in the printed Arts Country publication will be included in solo and group exhibitions.
“Lighthouse Festival Theatre is proud to provide this space to Arts Country,” said Lighthouse Theatre Administrative Director Helen Wagenaar. “The theatre’s management and Board of Directors see this as a natural progression of our dedication to promoting visual artists, and an asset to Port Dover’s already vibrant arts-based tourism industry.”
Joining the theatre in this collaborative effort is the Norfolk Arts, Culture, and Heritage Alliance (NACHA), the registered not-for-profit organization that oversees the Arts Country project; five studio tours; the Elgin Country Arts Trail; the Norfolk Arts Centre in Simcoe; and Barber & Veri Inc., a Norfolk County-based marketing company that has coordinated the Arts Country Project since its inception.
“NACHA couldn’t be happier,” said the organization’s co-founder and board member Kit Julian. “The new gallery initiative helps provide Arts Country with additional stability and legitimacy, and will also help grow the project and renew interest throughout the year.”
Julian leads a group of artists from throughout the five partnering counties who have volunteered to organize the regional exhibitions. Joining her on this sub-committee are Sue Goossens (Oxford), Cathy Groulx (Oxford), Kim DiFrancesco (Brant), Aliki Mikulich (Brant), and Sherry Lloyd (Norfolk). Volunteers from Elgin and Middlesex are still being sought. Administrative Director Wagenaar will continue to represent Lighthouse Theatre’s stake in the partnership as exhibitions are scheduled.
The Arts Country Gallery at Lighthouse Festival Theatre will be open during the theatre’s regular business hours, which fluctuate seasonally. Exhibition openings will be scheduled on Sunday afternoons. Admission is free. Exhibition details and operating hours are available at lighthousetheatre.com, artscountry.ca, and culturenorfolk.ca.

Arts and Culture in BrantfordSince artists are known for seeing the world in ways that differ from most, perhaps we should step into the presence of art in order to wash the dust from world-weary eyes. Go to a museum or a gallery or a few. Enjoy a mini vacation in the presence of art... preferably art that takes you into new aesthetic, emotional or intellectual territory.
In Brantford, Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant, 20 Ava Road, is one of the oldest public art galleries in Ontario. You’ll find a friendly welcome and plenty to see and talk about.
In Glenyrst’s outdoor sculpture garden ‘Meg’s Pause’ by local ‘thingmaker’ Dave Hind greets visitors near the entrance to the gardens. This 15 foot three dimensional sculpture was created entirely with recycled metals. “Continuous Portrait of Stephen Harper,” by Jane Hook, presents an uncompromising 360-degree view of the PM’s profile. Find it near the gallery on the left side of the house, outside the glass enclosed Golden Teapot tearoom.

I am a visual artist living in Paris, Ontario, focused on the original hand-pulled print-making techniques of woodcuts and etchings. I also explore other art media such as drawing, watercolour and acrylic painting. My current work is Rural Detours, a series of original woodcut prints and etchings that pay tribute to the rich stories found in our rural landscapes. I find much of my inspiration not far from where I live. It can be moments away or discovered while exploring the countryside, searching for the missing connections to our local heritage and rural environment.

Lately I have been inspired by the many walks I take along the Grand River, with my friend, a fellow artist. Discussions have lead us to deep impressions of the wildlife that lives serenely in the rivers midst, the tranquility of the location, and the effects that varying weather has on the lighting and colour of the scenery. I have a preoccupation with the world and our role in it. My work expresses our struggle, humanity’s connectivity, society’s responsibility, and individual choices.

My work is impressionistic. I use primary colours for their simple beauty and intensity. The beginnings of my ideas form in colour. A palete knife allows me to manipulate the thick layers of oil paint, affording a lush texture to my paintings as I boldly blob the paints on canvas and board. When travelling and away I make colourful sketches with acrylics as the beginnings of my new works. I paint seascapes, landscapes and still life with flowers. I paint the beauty of what I see.
Thomas Stewart Robertson was born in Toronto and raised in Brantford, Ontario, where his interest in art began as a four year old boy when a stranger gave him his first drawing pencil. Since then he has been mentored by artists such as Gary Woodward, Louis Crowe, John Fletcher, Alexandria White and Nassim Dar. His artistic mission is to bring the hidden beauty and meaning of life to light through artistic expression. Thomas is presently working on a new body of work exploring light, colour and glass.

The rural Canadian landscape is a vast and diverse wilderness, seemingly endless. I draw upon my travels, experiences, memories and exploit the tonality and aura of the landscape I’m painting, making it my own and creating a journey for others. I use extensive colour, layering and different, original glazing techniques. This technique also creates fantastic “floating” movement in my work, creating excitement and a moving landscape of endless possibilities.

After gardening and dealing with weeks of drought last summer(2012), the fall and winter seasons have provided opportunities to return to the studio and create. As a personal, emotional response to the joys and frustrations of gardening, my paintings aim to transform my mundane outdoor experiences into playful embodiments of how it feels to be a part of nature. Line, colour, and especially rhythm, are used to frame notions of the environment that are compressed onto a vertical canvas, using acrylic washes. An awareness of space and time constraints is leveraged to augment the energy of each composition.

There are two subjects that really inspire my art. The first is Urban Settings, with all the hustle and bustle. Stained glass, mosaics, glass fusion, restorations. Frank is an artist with a degree in visual arts of fire who has made, in the last 16 years, glass as his main material of expression. Teaching is his way to share the appreciation of his art and the methods used in creating his original pieces. Frank works with traditional tools and materials and is exploring unique new techniques to create an expression best described as :contemporary/modern/close to abstract!....showing that stained glass is much more than the traditional art that we are accustomed to seeing. Frank welcomes commissions.
Through working with animals and owners, I have seen the bizarre relationship between them. Can animals and people form real friendships? Have we interfered with their perfect instincts? Because of my interest in these strange relationships there is an anthropomorphic feel to my art, binding the two species together. Recently I have been introduced to a “Bone Pile” - a place where the city drops our road kill and hunted pests for the eagles, crows and other scavengers to feed from. This Problem Wildlife has become the focus of my art. My hope is we ask ourselves what affect we have on them, and how they affect us.
