Preparations for the 2nd Annual Montauk’s Scarecrow Days presented by Montauk Youth and the Montauk Village Association have begun. Those wishing to participate in the contest, which involves making a designing a unique scarecrow for placement around the village, can pick up a scarecrow frame (donated by RBS)
and location assignment at Keeshan Real Estate. The general rules, as posted on the Montauk
Youth website are outlined below. Each entry must be designed for outdoor
display and constructed to withstand all weather conditions. Organizers are not responsible for any damage or loss to all or any part of a scarecrow.
Participants must place their scarecrow and all related props and materials in the location determined by event organizers. Assigned locations will be determined on a “first come, first choice” basis.
Montauk’s Scarecrow Days is an event for children of all ages. Scarecrows must be in good taste. Excessively violent scarecrows, as well as any scarecrows that display offensive, crude or derogatory components, are not permitted and may be rejected. Scarecrows that reflect controversial, political or religious themes will not be accepted. Organizers reserve the right to reject or remove any entry that fails to meet these standards or that is otherwise unacceptable or inappropriate. Participants must maintain their respective scarecrow from the time of installation through November 2. Participants are responsible for removal and disposal of their scarecrow.
All entries must be installed at their assigned location by Friday to be included in the judging. Winners will be announced at Montauk Youth’s Field Day on October 14.Call Maureen at 631.668.1540 with questions.
The bass bite is banging in Montauk, both inshore and from the shore, with surfcasters shoulder to shoulder on the rocks at the point looking to get in on the blitz.
At sea, last Thursday Jamie Wallace (above) landed a 48-pound striper aboard Captain Mario Melito’s the Lady Grace out of Westlake Marina.
Same day the Hamptons’ most eligible bachelor, Jimmy Conigliaro (below), showed he’s an outdoorsy dude. He landed this 32-pounder aboard the Grand Slam, which sails out of Gone Fishing Marina.
According to one old salt source, the action will continue right into November.

East End LibrariesBy Emily Toy
Here’s a list of new programs at local libraries. Check your branch for ongoing programs.
by Asher Lee
ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Creative energy and inspiration abound right now, so seek out those people who inspire you and brainstorm. Collect ideas and make tentative plans, loose plans that may need to change along the way. It’s about the inspired ideas more than the best plan to get there. Sit with a friend and get creative.
TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Serendipity, synchronicity, and magic are the best three words to describe things right now. Magical and expansive energy abounds. Listen for the whispers of the Universe and take action when the signs seem to indicate it is time. Magical week, so remember to not be disheartened by how things appear to be.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Relationships and love in general are the thing right now. Tune in to the people you are spending time with and really evaluate if they are “of your tribe.” The people in our tribe “get” us and help us to be more of who we are. That is what you are looking for in those around. If they “get” you, deepen those relationships. If they don’t, take a few steps back.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Okay you’ve been serious enough for a while, why not take a break and play a little? Be social and go and do and be. It is important right now to lighten up. Even if you have to handle some serious things, see if you can do them with a light heart.
LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) There is nothing to fight about. Just let people know what your choices are and resist the urge to defend them. Those who would require you to explain your actions may not deserve your love and attention and those who love you would never ask you to. Ask them to simply trust you.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Time for some gratitude. Actually, it is time to get yourself focused on what you have to be grateful for rather than looking at what you don’t have. Look around and see your blessings and hold to them. Your focus matters a great deal right now so keep your head in the best place you can muster. Writing down things you are grateful for can really help.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Align your hopes and dreams with what you want to do in the world. Career goals matter now, as does your reputation. Avoid the appearance of impropriety and live publicly according to your beliefs and highest ideals. Not a time to cut corners.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Where is your passion? Remember when you’ve been so excited by an idea that you brought all sorts of energy to the project. Well that is where you want to be. Feel what it is that moves you and then get going. If you’re not moved it is okay to sit it out.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Tune in to yourself. How well are you loving yourself right now? With Saturn in your sign you will have to make your relationship to yourself your priority and then think about how well others are relating to you. It is all about self-acceptance, for this the only way you will truly love and accept another.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Priorities matter right now – a lot! This can be a creative and dynamic time at the roots or core of who you are as long as you keep your priorities clear. You risk being focused in the wrong direction and missing a potentially extraordinary moment in what may seem to be the ordinary parts of your life. This is why your priorities need to be clear. Make yourself a list.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Stop thinking. If you could have figured out a solution you would have already and no amount of chewing on a problem will help you to resolve it just now. It’s not time to know yet. I know you want to know now, but it’s just not time. Some things behind the scenes have to move before you will have a resolve so give your head a rest.
PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Trust what you have been feeling and thinking. Even if you don’t have a complete sense of what exactly you are feeling, hold to it. It will come clear and right now is all about trusting where you are being led. There are things that may not make perfect sense just now, however, you still need to trust and take a leap of faith.
NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday.

Today’s Birthday: Gwen Stefani, 1995When Gwen Stefani was growing up in Fullerton, California she suffered from dyslexia
and attention deficit disorder. Drawn to music, she listened to her parents’ records – they like Folk Music - and she performed high school musicals.
In 1986 her brother, Eric, invited her to try out for a band he was forming. The Band became No Doubt and its unique brand of rock and Ska quickly found a healthy audience.
In addition to touring with No Doubt Stefani collaborated with artists like Moby and Eve and began dating Gavin Rossdale, the front man for the band Bush.
In 2001 No Doubt earned two Grammys for songs on its Let’s Rock album but Stefani decided to leave the group soon after. Her debut album Love. Angel. Music.
Baby. was a huge success, blending techno rock, dance music, and New Wave and featuring scores of talented collaborators. It earned five Grammy nominations including Album Of The Year and stamped Stefani as a legitimate superstar. In 2008 she reunited with No Doubt and the band went on a world tour the following year.
Stefani comes from a long line of seamstresses; she entering the world of fashion was a natural progression for her. Her creations attracted a number of A-list celebrities.
She and Rossdale have two children; she donated $1 million to the Japanese Earthquake relief fund and she continues to raise money for the victims.
