The Hamptons Take 2 Documentary Film Festival, directed by Jacqui Lofaro of Bridgehampton, will pay tribute to pioneering documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles, who died at his Manhattan home on March 5 at the age of 88, by screening his last film Iris and hosting a panel discussion on Sunday at 2:30 PM at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor.
The film, which doesn’t open in theaters until the end of April, tells the story of colorful style maven Iris Apfel who grew up in middle class Queens during the 1930’s Depression, and tracks the creative and successful life she achieved in the worlds of both fashion and interior design.
“We thought it fitting to celebrate both Albert’s life in documentary film and Iris Apfel’s continuing impact on
Tribute To Filmmaker Albert Maysles With Iris
freedom in fashion,” explained Lofaro. “This pairing of 88-year old legendary filmmaker Albert Maysles with the quick-witted, flamboyant 93-year-old Apfel re-ignites for us all the bright blaze of creative invention.”
Director Albert Maysles and his brother David (1932-1987) were pioneers in the “direct cinema” or “cinéma vérité” style of documentary filmmaking, in which the hand-held camera follows the subject, without use
of scripts, sets or narration.A panel discussion after the film
screening will be hosted by Susan Lacy, the creator/longtime producer of the PBS American Masters series, now on HBO. Panelists will include filmmakers D.A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus, and Mirra Bank, who worked with Maysles over the years. Admission is $15 at the door.

today’s birthdayby Miles X. Logan
ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Foul! There’s a full court pressing on you now. Though you’d gladly be traveling in 20 seconds if they put the ball in your court, you can’t and they won’t, at least for a while. Next week will be a slam dunk, so once you get in the air, pass up the coach and live like the big folks do in first class. No tour buses for you.
TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Gentlewo/men, start your engines! Rich are petty? Poor new man. They’ll hunger no more, for they left rubber-room jealousy behind to earn their victory lap. God/dess in those details, the God/dess of good luck. The flag’s checkered, like your past. Qualify in record time. Win the race and put the medal on your lapel.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Extreme games! Everybody’s going wild. You’re going to have to become an ex-spectator. It’s even quite dangerous to look before you leap now. Bung “G” jump on him, if you have to. Throw him and the other scary monsters out of your life. They’ll have you over a barrel until you get over your falls from grace.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Hike!
As in “Take a...” A snap decision? A full backwards advance is a retreat and you can’t just punt, so why not go offside for as long as you can? There’s no penalty in delaying this game. First down a few vitamin C’s to help you handle the stress, and then go sit on the bench until they remember why you’re not in the game.
LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Let’s get ready to rumble! You’ve boxed yourself into your corner of the world for too many rounds of duck-and-weave. Puttering around house cleaning is making you feisty, like you mean it. Even if you’ve a gorgeous form, men may treat you like a punching bag unless you renounce that title now. Time for some road work.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Game, set, match! Accept the backhanded compliments, that’s all those base lie-mongers are capable of hitting back at you. Your net gain of points-by-the-double is your only fault and that’s making their cool spins come unstrung in short order. The judges have their eye on the ball and it’s you they love to serve.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Stroke! Of luck, that is. Being in the swim of things is fine but the “us” trail you’ve been crawling on has put you in the fast lane to the gold. Put that old impish pool shark technique on the back-stroke. You’re greased and ready to swim the channel, so change the channel on all of those old habits that should be deep-sixed.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) No pain, no pain! How much weight does await chucking off of your heart before the big burn stops? The bar-belles are too light and the iron-men are too heavy to bear. Mr. Universe has something good in store for you - the gym store. Push up your mouth into a smile and pull up to where you can work it out and hard.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) And they’re off! Their rockers, that is. Your horsey friends are jockeying to get the inside rail against that lovely bit of thoroughbred flesh you’ve been running with lately. They act like parrots mutually betting on who’s riding who. It’ll stop when the photo-finisher sends you the positives with you in the winner’s circle.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Play ball! It’s time out from sand, lots of sand, and time in at the owner’s punch-clock. Someone hit a homer and you’re the designated runner, so run home to the home team and get it on base before they strike out. Take meows to the bald-faced game going on with a grain of salt. No mo’ work’s fine - after you’ve dug out.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Fore! Use your eagle eyes and look out for a diamond in the rough. Par for discourse with this birdie requires a scorecard and a pencil with a big eraser. Chip away at the cheap shots and iron out your differences for this under-par bogey knows all the right clubs and balls and can improve your score.
PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Serfs up! Arise and shine up your woody because you got company incoming and it’s friendly. Fire up what broke down somewhere on the serf route your pal tried to make you take. The only hitch will be if you get bored till your back teeth are floating from listening to what’s been ebbing and flowing since last time.

Elizabeth Montgomery, 1933She was beguiling, literally and figuratively.Elizabeth Montgomery’s portrayal of Samantha Stephens on “Bewitched”
was so effective that she captivated the nation with her impish charm and innocent smile. A mere twitch of her nose became a signature move.
What made it so wonderful was that she was a closet witch who wouldn’t hesitate to use her magic when things got a bit sticky at home.
The series first aired in 1964 and became the highest rated show in the history of ABC before ending in 1972. It still airs regularly all over the world.
Montgomery was no neophyte. Her father was Robert Montgomery, a famous screen star who once served as the president of the Screen Actors Guild. He had his own TV series, “Robert Montgomery Presents” and Elizabeth made her debut on the show when she was 21.
After feature roles in Johnny Cool and Who’s Been Sleeping In My Bed Montgomery was ready for major Hollywood stardom – Alfred Hitchcock was among the directors interested in working with her.
Instead, she opted for the chance to work with Dick York on “Bewitched,” where she would have an opportunity to play not only Samantha but her mischievous twin Pandora Spocks as well.
Unlike her wholesome TV persona, Montgomery was known to get around. She dumped her first husband to date and later marry the dashing actor Gig Young. She divorced Young to marry the director William Asher – they had three children, and two of the pregnancies were incorporated into the story line of “Bewitched.”
She later moved in with the actor Robert Foxworth, and the pair married nearly 20 years later. Soon after, she became extremely ill. She was diagnosed with cancer and died in 1995.
She left behind a hidden gem: her performance in the title role of “The Legend Of Lizzy Borden” earned her an Emmy and purportedly solved the riddle of the famous murder on August 4, 1892 of Andrew and Abby Borden, Lizzy’s father and stepmother.
Montgomery, it was revealed later, was a blood relative of Lizzy Borden.

Vincent Longo’s paintings and Elaine Grove’s sculptures are on
display at The Drawing Room in East Hampton. In his paintings, Longo explores the energy and symmetry of the grid, creating improvisational yet structured abstractions through painterly latticework, radiant color and a timeless sense of ornamentation. Grove’s sculptural assemblages emerge from the touchstone of classic constructivism, marrying the found object with an internal logic that is immediate, poetic and rooted in history -- both of the arts and of the artist. The show runs through April 27.Student Arts Festival Part II

Deadline for submissions is Thursday at noon. Email to [email protected]’s Courage 5K
Katy’s Courage is hosting their fifth annual 5K on Saturday. Registration and check-in will be from 7 to 8:15 AM and the race will begin at 8:30 AM. Pre-registration costs $25 per person, and day-of costs $30 per person. Participants may register online at http://KatysCourage.itsyourrace.com. Runners will start at 21 West Water Street in Sag Harbor, head north and make a right onto Main Street, make a right onto Glover Street, run through the Redwood section of the course and finish back on Water Street.
The Katy’s Courage 5K is a celebration of the life, generosity and bravery of Sag Harbor’s own Katy Stewart, a 12-year old girl who lost her battle with cancer in December 2010. The not-for-profit organization is dedicated to education, pediatric cancer research and counseling support. Net proceeds from this year’s race will support Katy’s Kids @CMEE, a program that provides counseling opportunities for grieving children and their families, as well as, the Katy’s Courage Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan and scholarships for students in Sag Harbor and East Hampton schools.
Last year, over 1200 participants from four to 89-years-old, ran, jogged or walked the entire course and over $50,000 was raised through participation, sponsorships and cash donations. Proceeds benefitted high school scholarships awarded to local
graduating students, a donation was made to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and monies were allocated in funding the creation of Katy’s Kids @ CMEE, the Children’s Museum of the East End.Polar Bear Plunge

New To TheatersLost River (R ) Ryan Gosling wrote
and directs this suspense/fantasy and, as is often the case with actors, his effort, though well-meaning, is nothing short of embarrassing. Christina Hendricks does her best, given the wooden script and cloying sets. It’s a bomb.
Coming Soon Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 (PG) Kevin
James is back and he’s brought all the sophomoric prattle with him. Add a star if you are mentally deficient.
New On DVDThe Imitation Game * It was a
deep year for films indeed when a picture of this quality fails to win multiple Academy Awards. Benedict Cumberbatch is beyond brilliant playing Alan Turing, a mathematical genius who helped crack the German code during World War II, and went
on to become a key figure in the development of the first computers. His life falls apart when he is prosecuted for being a homosexual. Keira Knightley co-stars. Both received nominations, as did the movie, director (Morten Tyldum), and screenplay, which won a statue. Easily one of the best two or three movies of the year and one of the decade’s best thus far.
Now PlayingAbout Elly *(NR) Academy Award
winner Asghar Farhadi (A Separation) delivers the first great film of the year, a psychological thriller about a woman who disappears while on vacation at a Caspian Sea resort. Farhadi, who also wrote the screenplay, plants seeds of doubt and mistrust carefully within the framework of a seemingly joyous holiday weekend, leaving the viewer to observe with increasing alarm as they grow. A brilliant cast turns in multifaceted performances. Farhadi, an Iranian, is in line for another best Foreign Film Oscar. Don’t miss it.
