The Campus of the University of Twente is animportant location for arts and events. Not only

in the Vrijhof, but also in the Open Air theater andeven on the O&O square. Here students and external

parties perform, give lectures, concerts, cabaretperformances, dances, expositions and workshops.

The Vrijhof is also where Apollo is based, the culturalumbrella organization of the performing and visual

arts. In this semester booklet, all events of the firstsemester are listed, from September 2017 up to

January 2018 inclusive, sorted by theme.

Tijdens de Open Lessen kun je kijken hoe het er aan toegaat bij de repetities van de Nederlandse groepen: de toneelgroep, de musicalgroep en theaterlab. Kom gezellig langs. Naar aanloop van haar 31ste editie in november 2017 in Groningen zullen de nieuwe deelnemers eerst enkele andere theaters in Nederland laten lachen, gieren en brullen. Uiteraard staan deze zes talenten ook in de Vrijhof op het podium. Laat je meeslepen door een variété aan grappen en geniet van hun mooie verhalen en muziek. Komt dat zien! Pro DeoSamen met een ander team uit Nederland zal Pro Deo een improvisatie voorstelling neerzetten in de vorm van een wedstijd. Twee teams zonder script. Ze nemen het tegen elkaar op in een theatersportwedstrijd, waarbij met suggesties uit het publiek scènes worden geïmproviseerd. Monday 4 December 19.30, Amphitheater Vrijhof [VC]A room with a view – Theatre Hotel CourageTheatre Hotel Courage is the international theatre company of Katrien van Beurden. She depicts the world with archetypical tragi comical universal masks, inspired by the Commedia dell’arte. Theatre Hotel Courage travels around the world to create an imaginary hotel with actors from the various countries they visit. Everywhere they go they ask the question: ‘If the world would be a hotel, what archetypical character would you be and what would be your position in this hotel?’ The answers to this question are the starting point of ‘A room with a view’.

Met liederen vol levenslust, liefdeslust en troost in stormachtige tijden trekt kleinkunstgezelschap De Andersons ten strijde tegen de onverschilligheid. Tuesday 5 September 12.30-13.30, O&O-plein [NL]Muzikaal cabaret – Enge BurenEen vrolijke start van het nieuwe collegejaar!Achter Enge Buren gaan drie multi-instrumentalisten schuil, die uitblinken in waanzinnige muzikale persiflages en karikaturen. Ze lenen bekende popnummers en geven daar met absurdistische teksten en arrangementen een eigen draai aan. Dit op een originele en bovendien instrumentaal en vocaal ongemeen knappe wijze. Kortom; een muzikale, energieke, chaotische doch harmonieuze en zuivere explosie van heel veel liedjes in één show.

Thursday 7 – Friday 15 September, small exhibition roomInteractieve ramen – VloeistofA new way of experiencing dance, go crazy and play with time and space!At an unexpected location, you’ll be surprised by the interactive dance installation by Vloeistof. The images will grab you instantly. And they should, because the scenes are short: the stories are told within seconds. The projected film shows complex images the eye cannot behold straight away. Time and space play an important role - the forward and backwards movements don’t seem to match the film. The audience is directing the movie, through its own movement by fast forwarding or back playing it, speeding it up or slowing it down, meanwhile discovering new things all the time.

De vier Meisjes, allen afgestudeerd aan het conservatorium, arrangeren en zingen op theatrale wijze kerstliedjes én Nederlandse popnummers van toen en nu. Laat je verleiden door de ogenschijnlijk onschuldige Meisjes, zing stiekem een Wijsje mee en sta open voor de verrassingen die zij nog meer voor jou in petto hebben.

Die scheuring loopt dwars door de samenleving heen en is voelbaar tot in het buitenland, zeker ook in de Turkse gemeenschap in Nederland. Hoe slaagde Erdogan daarin? Hoe is het leven in Turkije?Journalist Froukje Santing en columnist Erdal Balci publiceerden samen Vechtscheiding: Hoe Erdogan de Turkse gemeenschap splijt.

Hij bedacht een techniek die uit afgedankt ka-toen een nieuwe vezel destilleert: de SaXcell, sterker en zachter dan natuurlijk katoen. Prof.dr. Thursday 31 August 15.00, Kick-in Tent [SG]A self-driving robotic car - Edwin DertienA car that drives on his own, winks at you, inviting you to drink a beer together? Really, it exists. Studium Generale presents you the Ami 6, a charming car, filled to the brim with robotic engineering by Edwin Dertien, Assistant Professor Robotics and Mechatronics, UT. He will introduce the autonomous car, a project he worked on with artist Tristan Kruithof. Dertien will give a talk about his fascinating work.Only for Kick-in students!

Een half jaar na de inauguratie van Trump maakt Maarten van Rossem de ba-lans op. Hoe zit het met het klimaatbeleid van de regering Trump? Ongetwijfeld zal hij ook het gure politieke klimaat in Washington becommentariëren.Prof.dr. Maarten van Rossem is emeritus hoogleraar Geschiedenis en bekend Amerika-deskundige.

Tuesday 10 October 19.30, Amphitheater Vrijhof [SG] The Future of Stem Cells – Christine MummeryScientists succeeded in ‘resetting’ ordinary cells (from your skin for instance) into stem cells. These cells have the same characteristics as embryonal stem cells, but without ethical dilemmas. When given the right treatment these induced cells can develop into any type of cell. The possibilities seem to be endless: they can be used to study diseases, to create new tissues or to test medicine outside the body with own cells. Prof.dr. Christine Mummery (Leiden UMC and UT-Applied Stem Cell Technologies-group) was the first scientist in the Netherlands to introduce human stem cells.

He worked on striking topics such as madness, crime and punishment, and sexuality. His work focused on a critical analysis of knowledge and power and on ethics as an art of living. Steven Dorrestijn, PhD, is senior researcher at Saxion University of Applied Sciences. Free lunch for students!

Wie kent de wonderlijke avon-turen van Alice in Wonderland niet? Het is niet alleen fantasie wat de klok slaat. Wiskunde en logica blijken een belangrijke rol in de verhalen te spelen. Auteur Lewis Carroll was dan ook het pseudo-niem van de wiskundige Charles Dodgson.Drs. Henri Ruizenaar, wiskundige én fervent Alice-verzamelaar, onthult veel van deze verborgen sleutels. Hij toont ook zijn collectie Aliceboeken in vele talen.

Kijk ons vliegen naar de maan en weer terug. Wat men vroeger bedacht, is werkelijkheid gewor-den. Of juist niet. In elk geval zeggen dergelijke voorspellingen ook van alles over de tijd waarin ze werden bedacht. Wat waren toen de problemen die om oplossing vroegen? En welke, soms stiekeme, kritiek op het politieke systeem valt te destilleren? Drs. Eveline van Rijswijk is historica en bestudeert toekomstvoor-spellingen. Deze ‘granulaire’ materie kan spectaculaire natuurverschijnselen opleveren, zoals schuivende lawines. Ook thuis is er veel granulaat: koffie, hagelslag of katten-bakgruis. Korrels hebben wonderlijke eigenschappen; soms gedra-gen ze zich als vaste stof, soms als vloeistof. Prof.dr. Henk van Houtum plaatst migratie in een breder historisch en geo-grafisch perspectief en legt de tegenstrijdigheden en averechtse effecten van het huidige systeem bloot. Prof.dr. Henk van Houtum, Nijmegen Centre for Border Research, Radboud Universiteit, publiceerde onder meer Grensland en Eerlijke nieuwe wereld.

Wat bete-kent het dat de mens -die eigenlijk pas net komt kijken- zijn naam plakt op een geologisch tijdsgewricht? Met fragmenten uit de film Stalker van Tarkovsky. Prof. dr. René ten Bos is hoogleraar filosofie van de management-wetenschappen, Radboud Universiteit en de Denker des Vader-lands.

Thursday 14 December 20.00, Concordia Enschede [SG] [NL]In de wolken – Pier SiebesmaWolkenlatijn klinkt prachtig: cirrus (haarlok, veerwolk) of cumulus (stapelwolk). De eerste indelingen voor wolkenvormen werden ruim 200 jaar geleden bedacht. Tegenwoordig gebruiken weer-kundigen tien hoofdsoorten, afhankelijk van hoe (door de mens of de natuur) en op welke hoogte de wolk is ontstaan. Een voor-beeld van een door de mens gemaakte wolk is het pilotengat: een gat in het wolkendek dat een vliegtuig veroorzaakt. Prof.dr. Pier Siebesma (TU Delft en KNMI), werkte mee aan de nieu-we Wolkenatlas en toont ondermeer prachtige time-lapsefilmpjes van wolkenvorming.

Uit onderzoek blijkt zelfs dat je IQ daalt wanneer je telefoon naast je studieboeken ligt. Hoe werkt aandacht? En hoe kun je je wapenen tegen afleiders? Welke trucs halen ‘aandachtsar-chitecten’, zoals reclamemakers en verkeersdeskundigen, uit de kast om onze aandacht te trekken? Prof.dr. Stefan van der Stigchel is directeur van het Attention Lab waarin hij allerlei proeven doet op aandachtsgebied. Hij publiceer-de het boek Zo werkt aandacht.

Monday 4 December 12.45, DesignLab [SG] Thomas Kuhn, Lunch Lecture PhilosophyThomas Kuhn gave a lot of thought to the theme of knowledge. He introduced the idea of the paradigm shift, meaning that scientific disciplines undergo fundamental and essential changes rather than progressing in a linear manner. These paradigm shifts open up new approaches to understanding what scientists would never have considered valid before. Prof.dr.ir. Mieke Boon is professor Philosophy of Science in Practice in the Philosophy Department (UT).Free lunch for students!
