ARTS for ALL
One of the delights of being in this school is the opportunity
to see the boys involved in so many different activities. In a
school of 440 boys many people expect there to be great
enthusiasm for sport but there is a remarkable passion for
the creative and performing arts, too. We have six different
choirs, two orchestras, a jazz band and a concsert band, a
Brazilian Bateria and numerous chamber music ensembles.
The boys are fortunate in that they have wonderful support
from our professional theatre team when staging drama
productions and our directors, both musical and dramatic,
are outstanding. Each year there is a junior school Art and
Design show in which every boy has a least two pieces on
display and their creative work in computing and animation
is always impressive. We are especially fortunate that the
governors are so supportive of all these activities. The Reeve
School of Art and Design is a bright, spacious and well-
equipped building, the theatre provides an excellent setting
for our productions and a brand new music school opened
in April 2018. The arts are certainly alive and well at King’s
College Junior School!

ART
Art at King’s is fun, inclusive and a celebration of creative
and practical learning. All boys are taught by specialist
teachers and schemes of work are developed around
the core practices of drawing, painting, printmaking and
3D design, as well as ceramics, mixed media and digital
processes. Projects are inspired by contemporary art
practice, art history and the rich heritage of different cultures
in order to foster aesthetic awareness and understanding.
All age groups work in the purpose-built studios of the
Reeve School. The Art department is a place to develop
skills, explore ideas and experiment with materials and
processes. Pupils of all ages are encouraged to build the
confidence and skills to record and respond to the world
around them.
DESIGN & ENGINEERING
Boys are given exciting opportunities to explore their
practical creativity in Design and Engineering at King’s. In
years 3-5 boys are introduced to the properties of
materials and practical problem-solving. They learn how to
use tools safely and evaluate design solutions. From year
6, projects cover a wide range of topics including
Computer Aided Design with laser cutting and 3D
printing, working with wood, metals and plastics and
solving real life problems through modelling and creative
exploration. Each scheme of work aims to develop
confidence in the workshop by exploring different
practical skills, whilst developing engineering and
design thinking. We have four purpose built workshops
with a variety of tools and equipment. Our recently
developed and versatile multimedia space provides access
to computers and practical equipment, allowing for a
smooth transition between different stages of a digital
project.
Every year Art and DE set a new theme to act as the
focus for projects in the autumn term. This work is then
showcased in a joint exhibition which fills the Reeve School
and features work from every boy in both subject
areas. The annual show is a highlight of the junior school
calendar and encourages the boys to see that there are
many ways to explore and respond to any starting point.
CURRICULAR DRAMA
Classroom drama is taught to boys throughout the junior
school. Lessons are designed to offer children opportunities
to express themselves confidently, work as a team in small
and large groups and above all, have fun! They learn a range
of skills to enable them to develop and express their ideas
such as working in role, hotseating, freeze frame, addressing
the audience and teacher-in-role. Topics and schemes of
work cover opportunites for writing and performing drama,
improvisation and role play, and responding to drama.
Pupils have the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular
groups, such as the debating society, an annual public
speaking competition and form assemblies which give the
boys a chance to perform in front of the whole school. In
the autumn term, boys in Priory present an informal evening
of drama to parents where they showcase pieces of drama
devised by themselves in lessons and assemblies. LAMDA
examinations are also available for pupils from years 5-8 and
boys are entered for grades 1-5 in acting, prose and poetry
examinations. Boys also have the opportunity to perform in
French at the soirée française and petit déjeuner!
DRAMA PRODUCTIONS
We hold an annual major school production which may
be a musical or a play. This usually involves a large cast
and auditions are open to all boys in years 5-8. Every boy
who auditions is given a role! In Rushmere (years 3 and
4), productions take place every year and include all boys.
Children interested in the technical side of theatre may join
the light and sound team for school theatre productions.
In recent years, productions have included vivid and
enthralling adaptions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour
Dreamcoat, Dragon Days, Peter Pan, Ye-Ha!, The Wizard of
Oz, The Wind in the Willows, Guys and Dolls, Robin and the
Sherwood Hoodies and Pirates of the Curry Bean.
CURRICULAR MUSIC
Music is an essential part of the boys’ education and is given
a prominent place in school life. Our aim is to encourage
the enjoyment of music and music-making in all our boys,
to use music to build self-confidence and social skills, and to
provide top-quality tuition to nurture musical talent.
The curriculum acknowledges the work of several eminent
music educators and has been designed to meet the musical
needs of all our boys. Class music lessons involve singing,
theory, keyboard and percussion work.
All boys are encouraged to sing, whether it be in class,
assembly or in one of the six junior choirs. We also
encourage boys to have instrumental or vocal tuition with
one of our many specialist visiting music teachers. We offer
a beginner scheme to younger boys, which provides group
tuition on an orchestral instrument at a reduced fee.
Associated Board practical exams take place at the school
each term and boys can be entered for these at the request
of their instrumental or singing teacher. We provide booster
theory and aural classes outside class time for boys preparing
for ABRSM exams.
MUSIC PERFORMANCES
Outside academic lessons, we have a wide range of
ensembles and groups which rehearse before school,
at lunchtime or after school. These ensembles cater for
musicians of all abilities as they move through the school
and provide valuable opportunities for boys to perform with
others and learn ensemble skills.
There are many performance opportunities within the
school and beyond, including regular informal concerts,
chamber music concerts, showcase concerts, house music
competitions, music festivals, school services, assemblies and
foreign tours.
Recent highlights have included a chamber choir tour to
Austria, Christmas carols and concerts at The Ritz, Holy
Trinity (Sloane Square) and Cadogan Hall, and Evensong at
St Paul’s Cathedral.
COMPUTING AND ANIMATION
Computing at King’s allows the boys to develop transferable
skills and gain effective knowledge that will continue with
them throughout their lives.
In Rushmere, boys learn soft skills, such as the development
of multimedia presentations, spreadsheet modelling, effective
internet searching, an introduction to programming and
touch typing.
Upon moving into Priory, this knowledge is reinforced
alongside the addition of new activities that include learning
theory and making movies, animations and websites
through the Adobe creative suite (Dreamweaver, Flash
and Photoshop). Pupils also learn to code using HTML and
programme using the Python programming language.

FACILITIES FOR ALL
King’s is fortunate to have a range of exceptional facilities in which students and teachers can practise and demonstrate
their passion for the ar ts. Art, Design and Engineering flourish in the purpose-built studios and workshops of the Reeve
School, whilst drama productions are performed to a professional standard in the Collyer Hall Theatre, which can seat
an audience of nearly 200.
Our state-of-the-art music school was opened in April 2018. This impressive addition to the school campus includes four
music and specialist classrooms, 16 individual practice rooms, performance spaces and a magnificent concert hall that can
accommodate an audience of 200 alongside a 70-piece orchestra.
