WELcOMEThe year 2012 is a landmark one for Greenock Arts Guild Ltd, we will say goodbye to Campbell St and reopen at The Beacon with the very best of facilities for performing arts and a beautiful river view Bistro. Everyone who has performed on the stage, taken part in activities or seen shows at the Arts Guild Theatre or Wallace Bennett Studio will have feelings about their closing but from now until June they will be going strong, providing an excellent service to all who come to enjoy the programme. You will find here all the good things you’ve come to expect from your Guild favourites plus some first time visitors from the wealth of Scotland’s creative talent and we are ready to take your booking for springtime entertainment.

In 1951 there was much to celebrate with the Festival of Britain in London and Glasgow and in Greenock the Arts Guild Gala heralded the first theatre opening in Scotland for 25 years. In 2012 we have the unique opportunity to say thank you to Inverclyde’s first centre for the arts with our ‘Festival of the Guild’. There are many ways to take part as these celebrations transport you back in time to enjoy all the glitz, glamour and style of the 40’s and 50’s through theatre, film, music and dance. I look forward to seeing you there.

Question: What do The Beatles, Badfinger, The Average White Band, Nilsson, Sir Cliff Richard and The Rolling Stones all have in common?

Answer: John Wilson

Question: What can you expect from an evening at a John Wilson show?

Answer: A voice to die for, showmanship unequalled, a highly talented band, a plethora of great original songs, covers that can only be described as hidden gems, all sung with an honesty that the original singers and composers would be proud of!

“…this collage of everyday experience is tremendously nourishing, heart-warming and affecting. Like life itself, you want it to go on for ever.”Mark Fisher, Published in The Scotsman, 21 May 2010

A photographic memory. Thick brown hair that goes frizzy in the rain. A cameo brooch that belonged to my grandmother. An obsession with list making and thank you letters. Small ears. Asthma. The ability to achieve ten things before breakfast. The knowledge that it’s always important to wear clean underwear as you never really know when you might have an accident…These are some of the things I got from my mother.

Hand Me Down is an original show made with ten women from the same family which aims to explore female relationships in families.

DOUBLE NUGGETRandom Accomplice showcase two ingenious, hilarious and incredible stories – Mary Massacre and Seven Year Itch – under the banner DOUBLE NUGGET.

“an hilarious and uproarious evening of stage comedy...Random Accomplice will be long remembered as a right rollicking night out.” The Sunday Herald

MARY MASSACREA bitter sweet, emotional rollercoaster of a story about two disappointed women waiting at the candy floss machine on Irvine Moor. On the surface, there are the overlapping stories of the women who share a light hearted secret and a love of psychics. Underneath, a tale of deceit, loss and betrayal.

Both of them are unaware how they’ll change each other’s lives forever.

SEVEN YEAR ITCHThis true story of the brutal slaying of an office worker in America is interwoven with the delightfully flamboyant tales of two Glasgow co-workers, one of whom is obsessed with Dolly Parton.

Seven Year Itch is for the day dreamer who looks at the stapler with murderous intent, for anyone who thinks about shredding their co-workers fingers and for those of you who sing out loud and proud at your desk.

Goodnights Entertainment present a brand new one woman show by award winning ‘Girls Night’ writer Louise Roche Starring Casualty’s Rebecca Wheatley. Hilarious, Intriguing, Uplifting!

Barbara has just survived an eventful ‘significant’ birthday, which has got her thinking about many things – not least the merits of ‘Big Pants & Botox’. Come and join her as she takes us on an hilarious, emotional, intriguing and ultimately uplifting journey.

If you have to empty your bladder before joining the kids on the trampoline, and it’s a few years since you’ve had an uninterrupted view of your feet: if you know a prolapse has nothing to do with structural engineering, and that the word piles doesn’t have to be followed by the word ‘of ’, then you’ll be amused, delighted, and even comforted by Louise Roche’s new play.

WARNING: It is recommended that you do not watch this play with a full bladder!

Using Tchaikovsky’s stirring score and a moving adaptation of the original choreography, sixty dancers of Ballet West will tell the story of the love of a young man for the cursed Odette, who is destined to spend her life as a swan, unless true love can release her from the spell of the evil Von Rothbart.

Ballet West is a ballet company that mixes professional dancers with students about to begin their careers. Over recent years, the company has developed a significant reputation in producing very high quality, classical ballet, which has developed loyal audiences in venues throughout Scotland. OUR HOUSE - Music and lyrics by Madness

First presented in London in 2002, OUR HOUSE combines a witty and brilliantly-crafted romantic tale with the energetic and often madcap songs of Madness. Our House is the story of Joe Casey who, on the night of his sixteenth birthday, takes Sarah, the girl of his dreams, out on their first date. In an effort to impress her with bravado, he breaks into a building site overlooking his home on Casey Street, which is owned by Mister Pressman, a high-end property developer. The police turn up, at which point Joe’s life splits into two: the Good Joe, who stays to help, and Bad Joe, who flees.

Songs include: It Must be Love, Baggy Trousers, My Girl, House of Fun, Wings of a Dove.

On the 27th December 1936 in a penthouse suite high above the streets of New York a meeting took place between a young, beautiful and very much in demand actor, John Gielgud, and the playwright Edward Sheldon. It was to change both their lives forever.

Gielgud wrote ‘I had an extraordinary time this afternoon. Edward Sheldon who wrote ‘Romance’ and other successful plays has been stricken with some appalling petrifying paralysis for fourteen years and is blind too. All the well known stage people go to see him, talk to him and act scenes from their plays and ask his advice...he talks with consummate ease and charm, as if he had known you all his life...

The Man Who Lived Twice is a dramatised account of what took place between these two men, the ‘crippled muse’ and the ‘fastidious actor’, who a few days later returned to give the performance of his life…

“Laughs, heartbreak, war, regeneration, scented breezes, sparkling wit and the best dog puppet ever. Perfect for children and grown-ups. Terrific.” (The Guardian)

This multi-sensory theatrical adaptation of Jean Giono’s environmental classic tells the inspiring story of a shepherd who plants a forest, acorn by acorn, transforming a barren wasteland. A Comedy By Stephen Greenhorn. Sit back, belt up, and get ready for a dramatic roller coaster ride around Scotland.

Alex and Brian are two local lads, desperate to leave their mundane lives and dead end jobs in Motherwell.

They decide to get out the only way they know how - doing a runner with a prized surfboard owned by Alex`s psychopathic boss.

The only transport available is a “borrowed” worn-out Lada, but they hit the road and head north for Thurso, where the surf is up all year round...

On the way they meet beautiful girls, strange characters and hippy travellers leading to some late night whisky fuelled, philosophical discussions and romantic encounters.

Between the hilarious, laugh a minute one liners, pin sharp wit and banter, there’s a serious undertone which turns a light hearted farce into a moving, thought-provoking wee drama.

Be part of the celebration of the Arts Guild!

Late 40’s and early 50’s Britain was full of glamour and glitz. War was behind us and people looked forward to a new world order and a spirit of internationalism enjoyed through the arts. In Campbell Street, Greenock the Wallace Bennett opened in 1949 followed by the Arts Guild Theatre in 1955.

This June we will honour the Arts Guild’s 65 year history with a week of performances which take us back in time with music, theatre, dance and movies from the theatre’s early days.

There are many ways to be involved, you can submit an idea for you to perform, vote for the movies you’d like to see, book for a performance and set up a stall at our Vintage Fair.

To join the party go to www.artsguildtheatre.co.uk to find out more and to tell us what you’d like to do for the Festival of the Guild.
