arts impact - with asian elders

CHANGING LANDSCAPES The impact the Arts can have ... B - an older women from the South Asian community who attended verd de gris’ creative sessions at the Asian Women’s Resource Centre in Adelaide Street, Halifax. “At the beginning of the project B was very depressed and withdrawn. She also showed signs of physical weakness and had hand tremors. B didn’t fully engage with other women within the group and during general conversation she looked distracted and sad - she seemed lost in her own thoughts and memories. But as a result of Changing Landscapes B changed in many ways and on many different levels. Physically she became much stronger and she began to ask for specific exercises that she needed to strengthen different parts of her body. She particularly enjoyed working on her upper body strength and chest stretches. She liked the ‘pushing’ exercise. I created a ‘leaf’ dance for B during the Autumn which involved the hands shaking like leaves, B joined in with great joy and responded very enthusiastically to this movement. It seemed to be a very positive and creative experience for her. One particular session was very significant for B in terms of her willingness to open up and share some of her feelings. It began with the translation of some song lyrics and was about a letter from home in Pakistan. B began to cry during the reading and with gentle encouragement she began to share some very intimate memories and stories from her own life. She clearly felt safe and supported to be able to open up within the group. The other women listened very respectfully and kindly and were clearly touched by her grief and sadness. She showed a great deal of courage and strength by opening up - the session we had created allowed her to feel supported and loved.” Extract from dance worker Natalie Speake’s evaluation of ‘Changing Landscapes’ 2012 verd de gris 11 garden terrace • hebden bridge • hx7 8bl tel no: 01422 845 667 • email : [email protected] • web: www.verd-de-gris.co.uk
