It is likely that the very earliest music ever created was for dance; the first time our distant ancestors first banged on a log with a stick, someone undoubtedly broke into the Neanderthal shuffle! Things have come a long way. From ballet to break dancing, music and dance are now inseparable partners. Many great composers have done their finest work when inspired by the beauty of dance. Some have written full-length ballets intended for virtuoso dancers. Other compositions use the compelling rhythms of dance in works intended for concert performance.

On November 15, the Garland Symphony Orchestra will feature pianist Lei Weng performing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1. On December 20, the Garland Symphony Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, Kallman’s Holiday Hoedown, selections from Amahl and the Night Visi-tors, and will also feature its popular Holiday Sing-along with holiday favorites! Art Faculty of the Garland ISD will exhibit their personal artworks in the Gallery Space December 10 through January 16. This annual show benefits the Kaye Swartz and Terri Smith Scholarship Fund for deserving senior art students in the Garland ISD. The public is invited to make a tax deductible gift toward this scholarship fund through envelopes provided at the show. This allows the art faculty to showcase their own artistic talents and the public is invited to vote on their favorite artwork as a “People’s Choice.” Viewing hours are Monday-Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, and during all performances.

The Garland Quilt Guild will be displaying quilts in the Granville Arts Center Gallery Space November 1 - December 8. The quilts on display have been created using a wide range of techniques, including hand and machine quilting, piecing, appliqué, beading, and embellishments.
