FOREWORD

The original Arts to Go toolbox was produced by the BC Training Committee to encourage the Arts: music, dance, drama and crafts. Elaine Hayden, Provincial Commissioner for BC, requested that the Arts Trainers attending the 2001 Trainer’s Conference make suggestions of how to promote the Arts in BC. The Arts Trainers agreed that a toolbox representing all of the Arts should be created. They decided that girls should record a compact disk containing Guiding songs both old and new, and that the toolbox should include drama activity cards, dance instructions and craft ideas. BC Council approved the Arts to Go proposal. In the summer of 2002, ten Guiders gathered for a weekend to create the basis of the toolbox. They produced sample campfires, new dances, drama ideas, and suggested that crafts complement the other Arts in the toolbox. They felt that the toolbox should also include information for Guiders on where to find the Arts in each Guiding program. Girls from all parts of BC gathered for Expressions 2002, a week long summer camp celebrating the Arts. We wish to thank the girls and Guiders for their efforts in learning the songs in just three days before recording them. The CD will be an excellent resource for Districts throughout the province. BC Council then provided each District, and Area in BC with an Arts to Go toolbox to encourage the use of the Arts at the Unit level. In 2012 responsibility for the Arts was given to the BC Program Committee. The committee recognized the value of the Arts to Go toolbox in helping bring the Arts to Guiding and felt there would be value in updating the resources, creating new links, suggesting new ideas and detailing where these Arts fit into each branch of the Guiding program. The Program Committee also felt that they would wish every Guider to have access to the toolbox so their aim became to make the booklet available online; the Arts are then just a click away, waiting to introduce a whole new generation of girls to the wonder of music, dance, drama and crafts!

HOW TO INTRODUCE A SONG

Before you meet with the group:

1. Select a song that suits your purpose and age group.

2. Become familiar with the song by either listening to a CD or an MP3 on the internet, using a song book, or by having someone play the melody on an instrument or sing the song to you.

3. Practice singing the song yourself until you feel comfortable that you know it.

4. If possible, try teaching a small group first or trying the song out on other adults.

When you are with the group:

5. When teaching others:

a. Sing or play the entire song once through while the group listens. (if it’s a long song, sing the first verse and chorus)

b. Teach the song in segments line by line. Sing each line while the group listens, then have the group repeat it with you.

c. Sing the whole song together at least twice.

d. If needed, review portions of the song that are difficult by having the group try them line by line.

6. Sing the song at several meetings, at camps and events to know it well.

7. Let the group choose the songs they like to sing and introduce new songs periodically to expand their repertoire.

8. Remember to have fun!

Page 5: ARTS TO GO to Go - Music.pdf · 5. Create your own dance. Choose a type of music and a dance style, such as: country, hiphop, modern, etc. Choreograph a routine and present it to

HOW TO INCORPORATE MUSIC INTO MEETINGS 1. As the group is arriving have someone lead a singing game, dance, or Sing-A-Long

that allows new arrivals to join in. Pathfinders and Senior Branches members could be invited to help with music and singing.

2. Play music or sing while you are making crafts.

3. Make musical instruments and use them to accompany recorded music or while you are singing.

4. Songs and music can enhance ceremonies such as Enrollment, Advancement, Openings, Bridging Events, Thinking Day, Guides Own, Reflections, and Closings.

5. Have a talent-sharing night where the girls can share songs or dances they have learned in the community or through Guiding.

6. Provide a service by singing or dancing at Senior’s Centers or Community Centers. (Please remember that Christmas is a busy time and a visit from your group would be appreciated at other times of the year)

7. Give time during meetings for girls to think of songs and ways they can incorporate them into the program or be the leaders in teaching the other girls a new song.

8. Invite parents to watch their daughters perform songs and dances that they have learned through Guiding.

9. Invite an Arts Resource Guider and an International Adviser to your meeting for a night of International activities, songs and dances.

10. Set aside 10 minutes of each meeting for singing or music.

11. Invite community members to share their talents. A fitness instructor could lead or demonstrate activities to music; a musician could play an instrument, talk about their career or accompany the group while they sing.

12. Attend an Arts Event, festival, or concert. Older girls could offer service by volunteering to help at these community events.

MUSIC IN THE PATHFINDER PROGRAM

PROGRAM AREA

My Music, My Movies and More!

Get Musical

1. Host your own karaoke night. Karaoke machines, which play the instrumental tracks of popular songs, can be rented from music stores or online. When the machine is hooked up to a television and a karaoke CD is inserted, the machine plays an instrumental version of the selected song, while the lyrics appear on the television screen. Individually or in pairs, have everyone choose a track and take a turn singing a favourite number. Or find a song to sing as a group to get things started.

6. Many hospitals and seniors’ homes would be delighted to host a concert for their residents. Help organize and produce a one-hour concert or recital for a group of seniors in your area.

7. If you find yourself humming along to various tunes on the radio, why not come up with one of your own? Maybe you already play the piano or another instrument. If not, get together with another Pathfinder who does and put words and music together! Record your music or put on a live performance for your unit.

The Arts from A to Z

7. Are you good at crafts or other art forms? Do you enjoy spending time with little kids? If so, think about teaching a craft, drama activity or song to a Spark group

Finding the Path

Broaden Your Horizons

6. Learn one or two of the World Centre songs. Do the lyrics give you an idea of what it would be like to visit a World Centre?

A World to Discover

Around the World at Home

1. You may have danced the night away at your school dance, but have you ever tried the tango (from Argentina), the samba (from Brazil), or tinikling (from the Philippines)? How much do you know about international dances? Learn a form of dancing from another country (there are lots to choose from!).

Teach the dance to the other Members of your unit and hold a dance-off. 4. Move away from the standard “top twenty hits” and open yourself up to music from

other countries. You just might find a new favourite! The library, the Internet, second-hand CD stores and movie soundtracks (e.g., from Bollywood/Hollywood) are all great sources for your search. Check out the world music scene. Listen to music from different cultures or countries. Expand your tastes.

Bring your music to an upcoming meeting and present it to your unit.
