Fall Edition www.nwcsd.k12.ny.us “Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try” - Gail Devers” Message from the Superintendent of Schools Dear Niagara Wheatfield School Community, It is hard to believe we are nearing the end of 2018. The start of the school year has been both busy and exciting. There were a number of significant community engagement events and our fall sports teams had an outstanding season. On Saturday, October 13 the students, community members, service organizations and staff participated in Phase #1 of the Eco-Campus Revitalization Project at our High School/Middle School campus. In all, approximately 75 helping hands contributed to the beautification of the walking path along the front of the school. Phase #2 is planned for Saturday, May 18 from 8:00 am to 11:00 am at the High School/Middle School campus, so mark your calendars if you would like to help. The first Saturday in November marks our Falcon Wall of Fame and Athletic Hall of Fame annual induction ceremony. This year we honored 10 new members as they were inducted into the Falcon Wall of Fame and 5 new inductees to the Athletic Hall of Fame. You can see all of our inductees proudly displayed in the hallways of our High School. Our fall student-athletes performed exceptionally well. At this moment our teams combined record is 123-39-2, resulting in an overall win percentage of 76%. Danielle Carlson will represent our District in the New York State Swimming Championships held on November 16 and November 17, while our Girls Varsity Volleyball team will be competing in the New York State Championships during the weekend of November 17 and November 18. Good luck to all those still competing. Finally, we continue to commit resources to improving our facilities and grounds. Currently the District is completing an $18 million Capital Improvement Project, awaiting final approval for our Energy Performance Contract, and waiting for initial approval for a Smart Schools Project. We are also working with our architects to put together a Capital Improvement Project for referendum at the May 24, 2018 Budget Vote. We are in the process of finalizing the scope of work for this project. If approved, work will begin as early as July 2020. Message from the Superintendent of SchoolsDear Niagara Wheatfield School Community,

It is hard to believe we are nearing the end of 2018.

Artsy Pumpkin Project The eighth grade Art class recently created some striking pumpkins just in time for fall.

Students brought in old paperback books, that were ready for recycling, and turned them into “Boo-k” pumpkins!

The students “cut corners”, so to speak, by using the interdisciplinary knowledge from the Technology class taught by Mr. Pavan. They used the band saw to cut the books and the scroll saw to cut wood accents. Students then used paint, ribbons and natural elements for detail to complete their projects.

Colonial Village Bus Drivers Prepare for a New School YearThe annual Kindergarten Bus Orientation at Colonial Village Elementary was a huge success as parents and students learned all about the importance of bus safety.

Colonial Village Counting Challenge is on! Colonial Village (CV) students, in grades 2-5, were challenged by teacher Miss Jennifer Mielke’s good friend “The Count” to participate in his annual CV Counting Challenge.

Students who took on the task, scrambled to list the first 12 multiples of a number in less than 10 seconds (if they were in grades four and five) or less than 15 seconds (if they were in grades two or three).

Over 150 students completed the challenge for at least one number, two fifth grade students, Kaitlyn Molloy and Travis Reed, completed the challenge for all 12 numbers! “The kids were very excited to come in and say their multiples,” said Miss Mielke. “I loved the fact that knowing their multiples would help them in the future with multiplication, division and finding equivalent fractions.” “I loved it! It was fun,” echoed student Riley Vandenberg.

Dee’Vine Colon, Mark Hoover, and Ayden Johnson are busy taking on the Counting Challenge.

BEN Was in Full Swing for the FallThe BEN PTO (Benefit Errick Road Needs Parent Teacher Organization) was in full swing sponsoring their fall social events. They kicked things off with a book fair, Halloween dance and other events such as a Trunk of Treat, PJ Day and First Spirit Day celebrating 1000 Falcon Cash spent in the school store.

(LtoR) Parent Jennifer O’Toole, her daughter Harper Raine O’Toole and bus driver Donna Lewis who greeted them on their “practice run”.

Front Row: (LtoR)”Bus Man” (Terry Kanouse), Marlene Wentz, Leslie Buczkowski (Director of Transportation), Sarah Smith, Debbie Carey. Second Row: Alex Davis, Aimee Hammond, Paula Armagost, Sandy Niesser, Donna Lewis, Nancy Isenhart, Dawn Jones. Third Row: Jonathan Schul, Robert Rosati, Jennifer Parks and Margaret Messer (School Bus Fleet Coordinator).

It’s the Great Pumpkin at Edward Town MSThe Edward Town Middle School Student Council held a pumpkin decorating contest on October 16th to help celebrate the fall season.

Students were invited to participate in painting their pumpkins with the following categories in mind: Most School Spirit, Most Unique Pumpkin and Neatest Pumpkin. Almost 20 students participated and, even though it was a little messy, fun was had by all!

Winners of the prizes were all students in our sixth grade. Congratulations to: Logan Dolling (Most Unique Pumpkin), Sureshi Sood (Most School Spirited Pumpkin) and Amelia Soliday for the Neatest Pumpkin.

All students are welcome to join the ETMS Student Council. Anyone interested should contact either Mrs. Gleason or Mrs. Zamorski in room M209.

Errick Road Pumpkin Tradition Is Over 25 Years and Going Strong!Literary Pumpkins is a tradition that shows no sign of slowing down soon!

Each year in the beginning of October, students are asked to read one of their favorite books. They are then assigned the fun task of turning a main character in the book into a pumpkin!

As you can see much thought and creativity goes into each design. Everyone can agree, they all did a great job this year!

Safety Patrol Up For the Task at Errick Road ElementaryThings got a little safer at the beginning of the school year at Errick Road Elementary School. A select group of fifth graders were picked for this year’s safety patrol and they are certainly up to the task. The students are committed to providing a safe and caring school environment for all students at the school.

Fifth graders interested in becoming a safety patrol member are asked to write a paragraph about what qualities they possess that makes them a good candidate for the position. Safety Patrol member Lincoln Allen, a student in Mrs. Haseley’s fifth grade class, says, “Being respectful, responsible and safe are important qualities to possess.” A safety patrol’s job is to model for students the Falcon Force Expectations that have been taught in the classroom and to assist students in a safe transition throughout the building and outside to the bus. School Physical Education teachers, Mrs. Hayes and Mr. Vekich, are the Safety Patrol advisors and say the team has a significant and positive influence on their classmates.

Nico Leffler, Xavier Severance, Luciana Strangio, Olivia Ribbeck and Lauren Simon are assisting their fellow students before school.

Student Emma Ambrosia and friends hard at work on their pumpkins.

students participated in a new program called WEB (Where Everyone Belongs), which kicked off on August 28 with a high energy assembly and orientation for 6th graders.

The program recognizes that the transition to middle school is one of many changes that occur throughout life that can be stressful. While some students have systems or people in their lives to ease that transition, those without a strong support network may experience academic, emotional or social difficulties throughout the first year of middle school. WEB is a yearlong transition program designed to guide 6th grade students through the challenges of their first year of middle school by linking 6th graders with 8th grade mentors and creating an environment where they feel cared for, supported and connected to other students.

This summer, 31 incoming eighth graders were trained by school counselors and WEB Coordinators, Mrs. Lombardo and

Mrs. Yeates, to serve as WEB Leaders. Those students went through an application process which centered on selecting leaders who are responsible and above all else, kind. On orientation day, the WEB leaders participated in the opening assembly, then broke down into small groups where they worked with the 6th graders to help them get to know each other, school rules, strategies for middle school success and tour the school. It was hard not to notice students leaving the building smiling, chatting and looking much more relaxed than when they entered. As for the eighth grade leaders, they have the opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills that will serve them well throughout life.

WEB Activities are currently being planned which will take place during the remainder of the school year and will continue to foster the mentor relationship between 6th and 8th graders. A new group of WEB leaders will be selected from the current seventh grade class next spring.

Greenway Project Gets Underway

Ester Chong ready to roll up her sleeves and help with the new plantings.

Faculty, staff and community members of the Niagara Wheatfield School District bundled up for a chilly, rainy morning to help revitalize the High School/ Middle School nature trail.

In late September, students from Mr. Nixon’s and Mr. Collins’ classes were picked to represent Colonial Village at the Play 60 Kickoff Party at the Buffalo Bills Field House.

At the party, the students were able to hang out with current Buffalo Bills players, while they showed off their dance moves. This year during the month of October, the whole school kept track each day on how much physical activity they completed in a day. The goal is Play for 60 minutes a day!

Members of the Interact Club, Outdoor-Environmental Club, My Brother’s Keeper and others worked with the Niagara Greenway Project and the local Rotary Club to spruce up the nature trail.

Volunteers pulled out weeds and old ornamental plantings in order to replace them with natural, native plants that will help keep the environment safe and healthy. The new plantings will attract birds, butterflies and other pollinators that are needed to sustain an ecologically conscious local environment.

The students and adults are looking ahead to a five-year project as they work around the campus trail and then move on to the other school campuses in the District. The next event will take place in the spring after students and teachers have a chance to learn about native and invasive species. Students will then plant, germinate and harvest more natural species in their classrooms and then place them around their school campuses.

The group will be meeting on Saturday, May 18th at 8:00 am at the High School/Middle

Faculty members Beth Pyskaty, Angela Porter and Fran Walgate are joined by Bill Ross, former Middle School Principal, as they spend time together volunteering for the clean-up.

Magic Happens When You Read a Good Book“Spectacular Magic” filled the halls at West Street Elementary School as the 3rd Annual Summer Reading Challenge results came in.

Over 100 students participated in the event from June to September and 75 of those students read up to hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of minutes during the summer. Readers were treated to a Hogwarts-themed celebration to honor all of their hard work – they read over 113,000 minutes collectively this summer!

According to Elizabeth Scully, Reading Specialist at West Street, “The students this year read more minutes than the past two years combined! Most importantly, they are finding books that interest them, captivate them, and transport them to other worlds.”

Gracie Bell, a fourth grader, was awarded the prize for reading the most minutes individually this summer. Her total was over 13,000! “It was magical. It wasn’t thousands of minutes read, it was thousands of adventures I had when reading!” she said.

During the celebration, fellow teachers and West Street Parent Group members led activities centered on the theme. Mrs. Philisa Fazio directed the students in making “potions” from slime, Mrs. Kelly Caldarelli crafted “enchantments” in her wand-making class, and Mrs. Jennifer Golias ran a lively game of Quidditch outside. It was an amazing and magical celebration for the West Street readers!

West Street Wins Visit from Motivational SpeakerThere’s nothing like starting the school year off ready to take charge and that’s exactly what the students at West Street Elementary did. Mike Masters, motivational and inspirational speaker, kicked the year off with a bang. He talked about importance of speech, conduct, faith, love and integrity, to a packed house.

Mr. Masters visited the school because last year the Kiwanis Kids leaders that are comprised of ten 5th grade students created a video about benevolence and kindness. The video was entered in the WNY Character Council Contest for schools across WNY. “The West Street kids developed a video about encouraging a wheelchair bound student to participate in basketball by having all the kids use scooters on wheels and a shorter basketball so that they could all play at the same level,” explained School Counselor Lenore Palmeri.

The school won a guest motivational speaker, $250.00 to use toward our character education program and free entrance to the following year’s Character Conference.

(LtoR) Zachary Henderson, Christian Schroeder, Virginia Aldrow, Lorelei Ashby, Dominic Zuccari, and Sofia Scribner are “enchanting” with their newly crafted wands.

Environmental Science Learns by Kayaking The Buffalo Niagara (BN) Waterkeepers hosted Niagara Wheatfield High School students as they learned first-hand the importance of our local area freshwater resources.

“The purpose of the field trip was to give students an experience with our Great Lakes waterways so that they could learn by actually being on the water and not from our climate controlled classroom,” said instructor Norm Utech.

When the group arrived at the East Hill Foundation in North Tonawanda, three BN Waterkeeper guides, led by Wendy Patterson, gave students some dry land kayak instruction and within 20 minutes they were all paddling up the Little Niagara River toward the mouth of Tonawanda Creek.

The students all paddled about a mile upstream, taking breaks intermittently to rest and to learn about important aspects of stream and watershed health. Students were then asked to observe various aspects of the creek and to relate their observations to what they have been learning in class about watersheds and ways we can help to protect and improve the water quality of our local waterways.High school students taking to the waterways

Dreaded Winter VirusesBy Marilyn Schlehr (School Nurse at Tuscarora Elementary School)

When a virus enters your body, one of three things can happen: The virus can die, OR your immune system can activate and kill the virus, OR the virus can survive, multiply, and produce a cold or the flu. How do you keep this from happening?

Prevention The Power of Produce: Plant foods contain natural disease fighting compounds called phytochemicals and antioxidants. These substances can enhance your immune system. Therefore, eat vegetables and fruits at least 5 times a day, preferably 7-9 times.

Exercise: Regular, moderate exercise will stimulate the fighting T cells into doing their job – attacking foreign invaders like germs and viruses.

Healthy Lifestyle: To improve your immune system and resistance to disease commit to these guidelines: do not smoke, sleep 7-8 hours each night, eat a nutritious diet that includes breakfast, and avoid (or take steps to reduce) mental stress.

Germs: To avoid the spread of germs, wash your hands frequently with warm soapy water (for at least 20 seconds), and do not share cups or food.

Water: Drink 8-12 cups of water every day. Water helps to cleanse the body and remove toxins, including germs. By keeping body systems, especially the respiratory system, well hydrated, you can enhance your virus-fighting potential.

After Symptoms Occur “Feed a cold, starve a fever?” Many people say they can never remember whether to starve the cold or the fever. The answer: neither! The best advice is simply to listen to your appetite because being neither hungry nor stuffed will get rid of a cold, flu, or fever any faster. “Starving” an illness is particularly a bad idea. Intentionally restricting calories only makes it harder to recover from an illness.

Drink plenty of fluids: Drink significant amounts of water – at least 8-12 cups throughout the day. Additional water is needed not only to help fight infection, but also to combat dehydration brought on by fever. If you have flu-symptoms, vomiting and diarrhea also increase your need for water above the normal 8-cup requirement.

Presentation on Vaping Educational for ParentsJessica Hutchings, a program coordinator at ‘Kids Escaping Drugs”, conducted an educational presentation for parents at the High School open house and a recent faculty meeting.

This dynamic presenter spoke of the vape culture and how it has evolved since the devices were commercially introduced in the US in 2006-2007. She showed examples of various types of devices that are on the market (especially the Juul), the dangers and misconceptions of the juices that are used in vape pens and mod devices. She discussed the impact of nicotine on the undeveloped adolescent brain, the dangers that are beginning to be associated with vaping and also how these devices are very specifically marketed to young people in an effort for Big Tobacco to target a new generation of people to purchase and use their products.

“Vaping, especially Juuling has become an epidemic at middle schools and high schools across the nation and in the Western New York region,” said Ms. Hutchings. “Students now have the ability to discretely use very highly concentrated versions of nicotine, known as nicotine salts, right in their classrooms. The Juul is the newest trendy device that teens want to have in their pockets, just like smartphones. However, young people are quickly becoming addicted to these nicotine salts, and having a very difficult time quitting the habit.”

Unfortunately, teens and young adults have been brainwashed into believing that vaping is safer. Although it may be safer than smoking traditional cigarettes, that does not mean it is without risks. Because the trend is so new, science and medicine have not had the opportunity to determine what the long term health consequences of vaping are going to be. Although, early studies have linked the trend with pneumonia, cancer and a condition known as popcorn lung. “We need to focus on educating young people about how they are being targeted by the Big Tobacco companies with this vaping culture and also about the dangers associated with this popular trend,” said Ms. Hutchings.

“The presentation was enlightening and disheartening regarding concerns that many of my colleagues and I share regarding the vaping epidemic,” stated Angela Porter, High School English Teacher. Michael Mann, High School Principal, added. “Educating people about the perils of vaping and illicit drug use is the best way to proactively confront these problems. I would strongly encourage every school district across western New York to take advantage of this free public service.”

Vitamin C: Take 250 milligrams each day for 5-7 days. Although vitamin C will not prevent the cold, it may soften the blow, decrease symptoms (such as a runny nose and sore throat), and possibly shorten the duration of the cold by a day or so. Also drink plenty of vitamin-rich orange or grapefruit juice. These provide vitamin C as well as the fluids and calories your body needs.

Have some chicken soup! Researchers have studied the possible benefits chicken soup may have on colds and flu. While they’re not sure what the exact mechanism is, they believe that the benefit comes from something related to the smell or the taste of the soup. Eating chicken soup (or a soup that smells or tastes like chicken soup) may help increase the flow of mucus and clear nasal passages. It will not help cure or shorten your illness, but it may help relieve symptoms temporarily.

Garlic may help stimulate your immune system. Include one to three cloves of garlic each day in your diet by eating foods like: garlic bread, spaghetti sauce, lasagna, salad dressing with garlic, and by adding it to pasta salad, soups and stews. Do not use if you are on a blood thinning medication.

Pamper yourself: Get plenty of rest and relaxation.

Hopefully, by adhering to a healthy lifestyle, you can prevent an illness from occurring in the first place, or at least lessen the severity if one does arise.

Colonial Village Team Attends TrainingThe Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) team at Colonial Village will be spending this school year receiving training and diligently working to roll out what the framework will look like for all of their staff and students. Together, they will establish several clear rules for the behavior they expect in all areas of their school. At the roll-out, staff explicitly taught those expectations to the students. They will reinforce them consistently when students demonstrate positive behavior. The expectations for all student behavior will be clear throughout the building and playground areas, including the cafeteria, gymnasium, bus and classrooms. By detailing every expected behavior and teaching to kids in a positive way, it will provide a common language for everyone in the building, including students, teachers, teacher aides, front office staff, custodial staff, bus drivers, cafeteria staff, and the schools paraprofessionals.
