The Works Art & Design Festival 2013

Welcome to 13 magnificent days of art, design, workshops, demonstrations and festival spirit.

As president of The Works International Visual Arts Society, it is my pleasure and honour to welcome you to the 2013 Works Art & Design Festival, the first of the summer festival season, now celebrating 28 years of exhibits, performances and arts activi-ties in the heart of downtown Edmonton.

The Works is the largest free outdoor art and de-sign festival in North America. Last year it attracted 372,000 people, enjoying more than 700 works of art, by more than 600 artists, featured in 53 exhib-its, spread out over 31 exhibit sites, in Edmonton’s Downtown Arts District and around town.

This year, the theme of the festival is Human Energy, focusing on groups of artists working together, multi-disciplinary stage presentations and featuring The Works Canadian Aboriginal Artists Program. Come and enjoy the colour, ex-citement, and enthusiasm of the festival, and the contributions of artists from Edmonton, across Canada and from around the World.

Kevin Feehan, President The Works International Visual Arts Society

As Minister responsible for arts and culture in Al-berta, it is my great pleasure to welcome everyone to The Works Art & Design Festival 2013.

Street corners and city squares around the world have long been the original stage for artists to showcase their creativity. For 28 years, this an-nual festival has energized Churchill Square in the heart of downtown Edmonton with the very best in art and design.

I would like to thank The Works International Vi-sual Arts Society and the many volunteers and participating artists who, year after year, bring this vibrant festival to life and contribute to Alberta’s thriving culture.

The Honourable Heather Klimchuk

On behalf of City Council and the people of Ed-monton, Alberta’s capital city, it’s my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending this year’s The Works Art & Design Festival.

Edmonton is a city of unique cultural and artistic opportunities. Our communities thrive on creativ-ity, collaboration and personal expression, and these elements are reflected in the many exciting festivals that take place here every year. The Works Art & Design Festival brings Churchill Square to life by welcoming artists, designers and citizens from around the world to display and view won-derful works of art. The festival strengthens our city by building partnerships between artists and the community, highlighting the significant role art and design play in helping individuals find meaning and beauty in their lives.

Thank you to The Works International Visual Arts Society for organizing this festival and for your dedication to supporting Edmonton’s artistic community.

Best wishes for an enjoyable and successful fes-tival!

Stephen Mandel, Mayor

VIP MESSAGES

Almost three decades ago, a new organization, The Works International Visual Arts Society, launched its first ever The Works Art & Design Festival and the fledgling Downtown Business Association made the wise decision to become the Founding Sponsor. In those early days, the Works Art & Design Festival was one of the brightest lights in a struggling Downtown as, each year, it brought its own vibrancy and excitement to the core and sig-naled a start to a much needed source of Downtown pride, our summer festival season. Of course, as we all know, downtown is now well on its way to a re-naissance unparalleled in our city’s history, but The Works Art & Design Festival is still that bright light leading us into yet another summer of crowds of delighted festival goers. And the Downtown Busi-ness Association is still a proud sponsor and grate-ful that The Works Art & Design Festival continues to make our downtown their home.

Jim Taylor, Executive Director

To the left of this message there is a long list. Many of those listed are individual people, and many more are businesses and organizations that represent many, many individual people. The credit for creating and presenting this festival is owed to all of the peo-ple that are directly and indirectly referenced on that list, as well as a great number of people that are not. Their energies, in the form of time, thought, re-sources, creativity, intelligence, good will, and sweat are what gets The Works Art & Design Festi-val up every year. What makes the Festival happen is the synergy between the efforts of these people, and the participation of the people who visit. In 2013, as we celebrate Human Energy, I feel very fortunate to be working in a community where these synergies take place. I also feel especially excited by the range and depth of artistic experiences avail-able on Churchill Square and around town this year. The Artists in the 2013 Festival have approached the theme with a particular thoughtfulness—ref-erencing bodies, motion, ingenuity, exertion, and interaction and offering opportunities to engage in physical, political, and even personal discourse. Thank you for taking part,Amber Rooke

Our Government understands how important arts and culture are to our identity, our society, and our economy. On the road to Canada’s 150th birth-day, in 2017, we have a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the arts by investing in events like Ed-monton’s The Works Art & Design Festival. This unique gathering is an opportunity for the region’s residents and visitors to expand their cultural ho-rizons and discover the best in visual arts and new media.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I thank everyone who helped bring this year’s The Works Art & Design Festival to life.

The Honourable / L’honorable James Moore

This is Me

This is Me is a unique exhibition presented by ATB Financial, inspired by our partnership in the Empower U financial literacy program. We asked women participating in Empower U to create self-portraits and share their own vision of themselves.

At ATB Financial, Alberta means the world to us, and we’re honoured to support these women and present their remarkable creations.

Please visit the ATB Financial tent at The Works or www.wearealberta.ca to view the This is Me self-portraits.

This is one question that you can help answer by donating your unused but not unloved jewellery to this sculptural collage project. The result will be a richly decorated pair of artworks, laden with the intermixed memories and whimsies of a broad community of strangers.

WHERE ENERGY MEETS OPPORTUNITY

Enbridge is proud to sponsor and support internships for students from across Canada with The Works International Visual Arts Society.

Enbridge Art Internships through The Works help to provide new cultural workers with meaningful job experiences. These positions at The Works Art & Design Festival and The Places Art & Design in Public Places Program bridge the gap between education and cultural work through fast-paced, hands on learning. The Interns play an integral role in beautifying and revitalizing Edmonton’s downtown core.

Enbridge delivers more than the energy you count on. We deliver on our promise to help make communities better places to live. It’s part of the reason we were named one of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World.

THE WORKS SOCIETY EDUCATION INITIATIVES

This fast-paced program combines hands-on experience and theoretical learning as participants from across Canada complete in-class modules and apply this knowledge to their Enbridge Art Internships at The Works Art & Design Festival and The Places Art & Design in Public Places Program.

The Places Art & Design in Public Places Program internships provide new cultural workers with meaningful professional experience. Open to any student or graduate of an art and design or culture-related education program, these placements bridge the gap between education and cultural work. The program uses on-the-job training, mentoring, and hands-on experience to help interns develop critical business and arts administration skills in project development, management and marketing

Beginning each May and running through the summer, Enbridge Art Internships at The Works Art & Design Festival offer over 550 hours of in-class instruction and practical work experience. Since 2001, The Works Society has generated 182 intern placements. These select interns have benefitted from working with experienced arts presenters alongside Governor General Award-winning artists, international art and design educators and prestigious Canadian art curators.

To encourage ongoing skills development, Works to Work allows participants to return summer after summer to progress from Assistant to Coordinator to Supervisor to Lead Supervisor levels.

University of Alberta’s Department of Art and Design has led the way in providing their students the opportunity to earn 6 credits by participating in The Works Society’s Education Initiatives. There are now many opportunities for students from Canadian institutions to earn credit as program participants.

For more information on Enbridge Art Internships at The Works, visit www.theworks.ab.ca Click Education.

THE COUNCIL PRESENTS: THE WORKS SUMMER SOLSTICE GALA, JUNE 21, 2013The Edmonton Business Council for Visual Arts Annual Gala, celebrating the open-ing of The Works Annual Art & Design Festival each year, supports student scholar-ships and internships.
