BADMINTON was invented long ago; a form of sport played in ancient Greece and Egypt. Badminton came from a child's game called battledore and shuttlecock, in which two players hit a feathered shuttlecock back and forth with tiny rackets. The game was called "POONA" in India during the 18th Century, and British Army Officers stationed there took the Indian version back to England in the 1860's. The army men introduced the game to friends, but the new sport was definitely launched there at a party given in 1873 by the Duke of Beaufort at his country place, "Badminton" in Gloucestershire. During that time, the game had no name, but it was referred to as "The Game of Badminton," and, thereupon, Badminton became its official name.

In Jan 08, the ARV – SSC Badminton Club was organized with six members - Ye, Neo, Au, Nu, Pakin and Nick. Membership grew steadily week after week. It became the first sport event in ARV-SSC. The group decided in Feb 08, that the time had arrived for the internal competition. ARV Managing Director, Alan Stewart, offered a trophy for the winning team. The shortages of extra time and members delayed the first friendly match in 2007 season. The first tournament is to be held during the Summer 2008 season. Badminton will be first contested as an official sport at the ARV Offshore, Thailand.

Second Tournament will be opened to all other neighboring and alliance companies and will be held in mid year 2008.

Detail of venue, registration and prizes will be announced in Mar 2008.

WINDSURFING

The beginning of windsurfing can be traced back to 1965, when two good friends, Hoyle Schweitzer and Jim Drake wanted to combine surfing and sailing. They had seen that the major problem in surfing was that you had to wait for waves. Drake came up with the idea of an articulated mast and so they developed the universal joint. By the end of 1968 they patented the first windsurf board, the "Windsurfer“.

Nearly immediately windsurfing knew a growing popularity. Unhappy with the old Fiberglas boards, Schweitzer searched to find a better material that was longer lasting and cheaper. The result of the search was polyethylene.

Very soon the boards became shorter and lighter. The sinker boards were invented, the footstraps and the harness. The funboard was born. In the beginning it was only practised on Hawaii. But then it was repanded all over the world. The windsurfers got better and better. They began sailing in big waves, the wave sailing was born. It was a new challenge. They also always got faster.

KITEBOARDING

Kite Sailing, as it was known, was a medium that used the wind as an aid to harness its momentum and energy to mobilize their canoes across water. The earliest recorded history of KiteSailing dates back to the early 12th Century.

In the 1800’s George Pocock took the basic kite design to a whole new level by increasing the size of the overall kite and used them as a sail to glide carts on land and ships on the water. The designs of the kites were engineered with 4 lines, the same setup being deployed today. Both carts and boats were able to turn and sail upwind. The wind would generate enough lift underneath the kite to raise it off of the ground and powerful enough to sustain it for a period of time.

In the late 1990’s off of the Hawaiian coast of Maui, Laird Hamilton and Manu displayed the extreme sport opportunities to radical surfers and wake boarders. Its popularity has since skyrocketed as one of the fastest growing water sports in the past two years.

SWIMMING

The earliest records of people swimming are drawings found in the Kebir desert, which date from about 6000 years ago. The Nagoda bas-relief also has paintings of swimmers that are 5000 years old. There are many other ancient depictions of swimming from as far a field as Babylon and Assyria (in the Middle East). The Bible, the Iliad and the Odyssey all contain references to swimming. Many ancient civilisations swam, including the Egyptians, Phoenicians, Persians, Romans and Greeks. Plato once declared that anyone who could not swim lacked a proper education, and Julius Caesar was known for his swimming prowess.

The English are thought to be the first modern society to develop competitive swimming, which began in London in 1837. The most popular stroke at the time was breaststroke, although the recently developed sidestroke was also used.

The first person to swim the English Channel was Matthew Web in 1875, who used breaststroke to cover the 21.26 miles in 21 hours and 45 minutes.

BOWLING

The history of bowling can be traced back to the Stone Age. The first evidence of the game was discovered by the British Anthropologist Sir Flinders Petrie and his team of archaeologists in Egypt in the 1930s. He unearthed a collection of objects from a small child’s grave that appeared to have been the primitive form of the game. William Pehle, a German historian, claimed that the game of bowling originated in Germany around 300 AD. In Germany, the game had its origin as a religious ceremony for determining absence of sin. In England, bowling was started as early as the 1100s. Throughout England, several variations of bowling, such as half-bowls, skittles and ninepins, existed during the mid 1300s. during the regime of King Henry VIII, the game gained popularity and was played as a symbol of nobility and social status.

Bowling has been popular in America since Colonial days. During 17th century, English, Dutch and German settlers imported their own version of bowling to America. At that time, the game consisted of nine pins which were regularly played in an area of New York City still known as "Bowling Green".
