5. LappstadenThe largest, preserved, Sámi church town in the world, with about 80 Lapp dwellings and log cabins from the end of the 1700’s. Lappstaden has never been a permanent settlement but has only been used during markets and church holidays. The dwellings are still used by their owners during the “Storstämningshelg”, the last weekend in August each year when contests, auctions and many other activities take place. Lappstaden is not ploughed during winter.

6. Arvidsjaur folk museumThe folk museum, Gamla Prästgården, exhibits the local pioneer culture from the turn of the last century. Café and handi-crafts shop. Open-air stage.

7. Arvidsjaur churchAttractive wooden church from 1902, the fifth in Arvidsjaur and the second at the same location. The church has a 3-aisled wooden hall, designed by Gustaf Hermansson in experimental neo-Gothic style, with transverse gables over the side windows and entrances. Music performed certain evenings in summer.

8. Outlook tower on Lillberget mountainEasily accessible, with views of the whole district. Access by car. There is also a path from K4 goods entrance directly to the tower. There is a barbecue site and a dry latrine at the tower.

11. Arvidsjaur’s winter golf courseThis is a 9-hole course, par 70 for 18 holes. Play is on groomed, pure snow and water, which forms a suitably hard surface for the ball to land on and which is good for putting too. There is also a driving range included in the facility.

Arvidsjaur, in the heart of Lappland, lies about 130 km south of the Arctic Circle. Arvidsjaur is the name both of the municipality and of the main town with its nearby lake. It is a Sámi (Lapp) word meaning “the generous lake”. Around 7,000 people live in the municipality, 5,000 of them in the actual town of Arvidsjaur.There is a wide range of cultural and leisure activities all year round in Arvidsjaur. The ski slope, offering downhill skiing and snowboarding, is popular in winter. You will also find illuminated tracks for cross-country skiing and more than 600 km of designated snowmobile tracks. Excel-lent waters for both summer and winter fishing are easily accessible. You can, for example, fish for rainbow trout in the Nyborgstjärn tarn right in the centre of Arvidsjaur. Within easy reach are also an ice rink, riding school, bowling alley, adventure pool, sports hall and, making the golf season unusually long, courses for summer as well as winter golf. Event companies in Arvidsjaur have most kind of activities on offer, ranging from dogsledding and beaver safaris to traditional Sámi pursuits.

The special permit requirement does not apply to guided tours, but a minimum of tractor licence is required. *w Drink-drive limit is 20mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.w Speed limit is 70 km/hour. Local differences may occur and must be respected.w Wearing of helmets not obligatory but is recommended.w Driving in plantations and young forest is not permitted unless the trees have an average minimum height of 2 metres above the surface of the snow.w Snowmobile drivers must stop before crossing public roads. Passengers are not permitted to ride on snowmobiles or on sleds when crossing public roads.w It is not permitted to track or follow wild animals by snowmobile.w If the terrain is unfamiliar, drive on the snowmobile tracks.w Avoid driving over unfamiliar and unmarked watercourses; use the prepared snowmobile tracks.

* Exception for snowmobile safarisThere are certain exceptions for snowmobile safaris. Anyone with a driving licence or tractor licence (irrespective of date of issue) and who is at least 16 years old may drive all-terrain vehicles if included in a group of maximum 10 people.
