A Word from the Pastor
Time for a parish roundup: the capital campaign, the
renovation of Cathedral Center, priest assignments, and a
liturgical change. I’ll start with the capital campaign. Though it
looks like not much is happening, there is much happening
behind the scenes. A capital campaign subcommittee of the
Administrative Council has been meeting almost weekly to plan
the next phase of the campaign. We are looking for a part-time
fundraising coordinator (in preparation for a full-time director of
development) who would research possible donors in the
Portland area and beyond. This person would also assist the
business manager in other administrative campaign duties. We
continue to work with Campbell & Company as consultants.
The renovation of Cathedral Center has met a couple of
challenges. We are working with our architects and others to
refine the scope and reduce the cost of the renovation. We are
challenged by an old building, which is not officially an “historic
landmark” but still comes under the purview of the landmark’s
commission (in our “Alphabet District”). This limits in some
ways what we can do in our renovation. Our hope is to cut the
cost per square foot, if possible, while maintaining the historic
integrity of the building. I’ll keep you posted on our progress—
it’s challenging. To keep the project before our eyes, we will
bring back the Cathedral Project Prayer to conclude the Prayer of
the Faithful.
By now you have heard that Fr. Tim Furlow has been assigned
to St. Patrick Church as administrator. We wish Fr. Tim well as
he begins his new assignment; and, because of his proximity, we
hope Fr. Tim can participate to some degree in our Cathedral
activities. For the summer months, one of our newly-ordained,
Fr. Rick LeFaivre, has been assigned to Cathedral. Fr. Rick will
be with us until September, when he will return to Rome to
complete his studies. It is possible we will have a priest “in-
residence” at Cathedral after that. No priest has been assigned as
parochial vicar (assistant). In addition, we have a Portland
seminarian with us for the summer, Chi-Nhan Vo, a fourth-year
college student at Mount Angel. Chi will be working mostly at
St. André Bessette, but he will also assist here at Cathedral. A
welcome to him and to Fr. Rick!
Today, Corpus Christi Sunday, we will commission all of our
Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. Those who have
received the recent training will receive a certificate, good for
three years. For those yet to be trained, I hope to schedule
another training during the month of June. Eventually, all of our
extraordinary ministers will have received the new, required
training. Those who have not yet been trained should continue
as ministers—we need you! Along these liturgical lines, all are
reminded that Archbishop Sample has “determined that during
the celebration of Holy Mass, after the Agnus Dei, the faithful
will kneel.” This new posture begins today, a change “that will
unite us with the Universal Church.”

Pre-Kindergarten: Building a Foundation for a Lifelong
Love of Learning: Cathedral School’s Pre-Kindergarten
program offers a safe environment where children can exper-
iment, discover, find independence, and become thinkers.
The developmentally appropriate curriculum includes lessons
in literacy, math, social studies, science, creative arts, physi-
cal education, and religion; and still leaves plenty of time for
play. If you have a four-year-old ready for Pre-Kindergarten
next year, there is a spot for your child at Cathedral!

'rediscovery'. This program offers the chance to rediscover
yourself, your spouse, and a loving relationship in your mar-
riage. 10's of 1000's headed for divorce have successfully
saved their marriages by attending a weekend. Retrouvaille
is a not spiritual retreat, not a sensitivity group, not a semi-
nar, not a social gathering. For confidential information about
or to register for the program beginning with the weekend on
June 22-24, 2018, please call 1-503-225-9191 or vis-
