Tropical paradiseThis tropical yet functional abode answered the design brief for a home that would combine a holiday ambience with a functional everyday living environment
Cutting a striking fi gure into the sky, this luxury
Buildcraft home is superbly modern. With its long
driveway, extensive use of windows and oversized
pivot front door, the grandeur is instantly visible.
Once inside, the stateliness continues.
There is a large, vaulted foyer that contains a
stylish glass-fronted open-tread stairway fl owing
upstairs, two elegant plant pots that frame the
foyer, and the magnifi cent glass-fronted staircase
which refl ects the light that streams through
the windows, fi lling the hallway with natural
brightness. In fact, the natural light is a theme
that runs throughout the house and you would
be hard-pressed to fi nd a room that doesn’t make
fantastic use of it. Most rooms host fl oor-to-
ceiling glass windows or doors and all areas are
fl ooded with natural light, meaning there is no
need for artifi cial lighting until it gets dark.
Strong, deep browns feature prominently in
furnishings, except for a collection of eye-catching
bold red lights that were handmade in Europe and
that dangle over the kitchen bench. The kitchen
has been designed to suit any lifestyle. It is fully
This modern home was the winner of a 2012 Hills Building & Design Award for excellence in residential building and design.

equipped with a spacious butler’s pantry and
motorised cabinets. Whether you are a gourmet
chef or a family quickly pulling together a last-
minute meal, all the modern appliances enable
the creation of a superb feast fi t for a king.
Adjacent to the dining room is the luxurious
living area with its own fully equipped bar. The
deep browns of the sofa and the back bar area
contrast beautifully with the pale fl oor tiles and
ornate mosaics used on the bar front. A luxurious
shag-pile rug makes you feel right at home as
you sit down to appreciate the state-of-the-art
fi replace and the large fl at-screen television.
With its own bar and resort-style facilities, the
house has a relaxed holiday feel to it — which
is exactly what Buildcraft was aiming for. When
asked about the inspiration for the design,
Buildcraft revealed that the client wanted a
tropical resort-style feel.
The dining and living rooms run adjacent to
a relaxing patio area that houses glass walls
and stacker doors, allowing the house to fl ow
freely out to the undercover deck — perfect for a
barbecue or a summer meal. Buildcraft said that
in order to create the resort-style experience, the
living area had to be connected to the outside
through fully retracting glass doors, meaning the
rooms that were previously inside now become
part of the outside area. A magnifi cent swimming
pool runs alongside the patio, adding to the
holiday feel.
The clients requested four bedrooms for the
home, each with its own ensuite. These well-
adorned rooms all contain joinery-made bedheads,
bedside tables, dressing tables and oversized
walk-in wardrobes. The ensuites are tiled from
fl oor to ceiling and also boast expert joinery. Other
elements of the brief included a unique and grand
design using traditional elements and featuring
natural products, and the inclusion of a home
theatre room, a games room, an outside cooking
facility, and two alfresco areas.
As with any grand design, it was important
this house would be long-lasting. The clients
and builders wanted to use as many natural
products as possible so they could create a
beautiful home that will continue to be used by
future generations.
