AT THE ANMED HEALTH FOUNDATION, we’re driven to make sure quality health care is available to everyone. That’s why our annual community report always tells at least one of the many stories of how someone benefited from the programs funded by the public and the generous support of one of our biggest supporters -- our employees.

The plight of David Ramsey is one that should touch any heart, because he is a local man who simply could not afford to buy a piece of equipment – and when you consider that the cushion is relatively low tech and low cost, it’s remarkable that it’s all that stood between wellness and illness for Mr. Ramsey. The Robert B. Claytor Patient Assistance Fund provided the cushion through the support of the Foundation, which means through your support, you helped save Mr. Ramsey’s life.

The AnMed Health Foundation makes it easy to donate thanks to programs that support the Claytor Fund and others. Programs like these help to remove the financial and emotional stress associated with recovering from a family tragedy or accident that is out of our control.

We’re also raising funds for the AnMed Health Mobile Diagnostic Unit. Once this state-of-the-art clinic becomes a reality for our region, it will travel to neighborhoods, churches, workplaces and community centers to reach people who might otherwise not receive screenings. These tests can detect cancers and other diseases early, and our staff can teach about lifestyle changes that can lead to better health.

A CONCERN for community well-being is the foundation of AnMed Health, and it started when Jennie Gilmer saw the need for a community hospital so many years ago. The birth of her son was a difficult one in 1903. Like most mothers in Anderson in the early 1900s, she was unattended during the delivery of her child. Anderson’s only registered nurse had been called home to Charleston because of her own mother’s illness. It was a difficult – and frightening – delivery for the young mother.

She immediately saw the need for a local hospital. Not long after she gave birth she rallied the community and got the support and funds needed to build a hospital, which opened five years later where the current Medical Center stands today.

AnMed Health was founded to meet local health care needs in the early 1900s and since then has grown to become a regionally and nationally recognized health system. Mrs. Gilmer’s desire for local quality health care is one we carry with us today at AnMed Health.

DAVID RAMSEY’S WHEELCHAIR is his constant companion. It has kept him moving for 27 years since a gunshot left him paralyzed from the waist down. It is his lifeline to mobility.

The chair also can be dangerous for him.

People who spend most of every day in a wheelchair rely on often unseen technology to remain healthy. Without the proper cushioning, sores can become life-threatening ulcers, and that’s what happened to Ramsey when his cushion wore out before

Supporters help Ramsey when insurance failshis insurance was prepared to buy another one.

He developed a sacral ulcer and was hospitalized with an infection and other wound care issues in January. Without a way to replace the cushion, Ramsey spent much of his healing time worried about what he would do when he returned home. Valarie Haisley, RN, CWCN from Wound and Ostomy Care, was

concerned that without a proper cushion, her patient was at risk of re-infection, more hospitalizations and even death.

With Shelley Stone of Care Coordination, she contacted Service Recovery Manager Leigh Freeman, who also manages the Robert B. Claytor Patient Assistance Fund, which then purchased the cushion for Ramsey with the help

of the AnMed Health Home Care showroom staff.

“I don’t know what I was going to do without this,” Ramsey said. “I have been trying for months to get the insurance company to replace my ROHO cushion.”

The Robert B. Claytor Patient Assistance Fund helps more than 600 patients each year purchase lifesaving medications or medical equipment, Freeman said. “Mr. Ramsey is the perfect example of why we need the Patient Assistance Fund. Many patients are unable to afford medications and medical equipment because of insurance limitations and also because people are struggling financially to meet their basic needs. We want to thank Reverend Bob Claytor who started this fund over 25 years ago and all the people who have helped it remain in place over the years.”

The AnMed Health Foundation supports many causes in the community through gifts, donations and fund-raising efforts, including the 2015 Camellia Ball, premier event of The AnMed Health Foundation. The ball raised more than $173,000 this year to support Pediatric Therapy Works.

The AnMed Health Foundation raised $70,220 in the annual Kids Classic at Toccoa, Georgia’s Curahee Club in October.

Tim Self was named the executive director of the AnMed Health Foundation in 2015 after former CEO and President Emeritus John Miller served on an interim basis for most of the year.

Self previously served as director of development for major gifts and planned giving at the University of Tennessee Medical Center and UT Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville, Tennessee. Self successfully led the medical center’s fundraising efforts for an $11 million expansion of a Level III neonatal intensive care unit to serve the families of premature babies and sick infants.

Self has served as associate director of development and church relations at the Holston United Methodist Home for Children, manager of special events at the National Kidney Foundation and district executive for the Boy Scouts of America. Self received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Non-Profit Management from Maryville College and earned certification in healthcare philanthropy from the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy’s Madison Institute at the University of Wisconsin.

Nationally-syndicated columnist Sharon Randall, who has ties to the Upstate, made two appearances in April to support the Foundation’s campaign to raise money for a Mobile Diagnostic Unit.
