1. AS Media Evaluation of Foundation Portfolio 2. In what ways does your music magazine use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real music magazines? My music magazine follows the conventions of real magazine in many ways so it seem professional and authentic. Firstly I have used the rule of thirds to follow the convention of the front page being organized and constructed well. Secondly I have a close up of the model so that the readers eye direction like other magazines have demonstrated. To make it clear that the magazine will include information about the model, I have put cover lines that are related to her next to the image. However I challenged the convention of using photo shop on the face as my model alone gave the impression of the genre rock e.g the black eyeliner. However I defied the convention of the genre rock by having a model with a smile on the front page to challenge the stereotype of rock. This is due to people assuming rock is for those who are angry and aggressive which I didnt want my magazine to represent. 3. Similarly I have used my image to cover part of my masthead to follow this convention I have also used a small box at the bottom about what will be in the magazine I have used a puff on my page like the one next to it to follow the conventions of an advertisement I additionally added a different colour block behind some text to emphasize the importance of the text 4. How does your music magazine represent particular social groups? The social group my magazine represents is mainly adolescents as they are the most common part of the population that is in favor of rock music. I represent them by having the model on the front cover being of the same age group so it is clear who the target audience is. Also the colours on my front page are mostly red and yellow which are unisex colours so it is aimed at both genders. 5. What media institutions would distribute your magazine? The type media institution that might distribute my magazine are those that have experience is distributing rock magazines. Also it could be TV institutions who could advertise my magazine to get more attraction from a different type of audience e.g. adolescents. My main way of distributing magazine though will be through digital distribution. By having my magazine digitally distributed it means I have thought more of the audiences need for actability and o n demand. It also means there is less money spent on the physical product of the magazine. 6. Who is the target audience for your magazine? The audience for my magazine is mostly teenagers of any gender as rock is becoming more modern and popular in this generation. However there might be interest from middle aged or even mature people as rock has been around for many years and they still might be interested in the genre. 7. How do you use the codes and conventions to address your audience? To address my audience I used the convention of optical focus and in that position I placed a large text to interest the audience. Additionally I made my masthead bold and in capitals to catch the readers eye and conform to the convention of a rock music magazine. Like many magazines I used a puff to present my audience with another incentive to buy my magazine and make my music magazine look professional. To address my audience I followed the language convention of advertising such as `Q and A and `Win VIP tickets to intrigue the readers attention as they would have something to gain from this magazine. A convention I saw of importance was the barcode which made my magazine seem genuine and as something to buy. 8. I have used the convention of having a long shot on my contents page I have used the convention of having an advertisement on the corner of my page I have pursued the convention of having a banner along the top of my page with the magazines name on it 9. What technologies were used throughout this process? The technology I used throughout this process is photo shop which I learnt a lot about over time. To start with I needed to get my image the right size so I cropped it to my targeted close up. Then I duplicated the layer so that when I used the magic wand tool on my background then it would allow me to delete my green screen around the model. Next I duplicated that layer into my photo shop document that I used to create my music magazine so that I could add text boxes around it including my masthead. As I went along I named all my layers and put them in groups so I could move several objects at the same to make editing easier and keep everything more organized. I also added shapes with a colored fill to put on top of some texts to make the words stand out. Using a shape I also created my puff as a circle as I knew it would grab the readers attention. 10. What have you learnt from this experience from the preliminary task? From my preliminary task I have progressed extremely as I have learnt how to make a magazine front cover look professional. On my preliminary front cover I made my background a pale blue colour that vertically turns to white which is not a convention of music magazines. To transform this I used a black fill shape as my background on my foundation portfolio which follows the convention of a one colour background. Secondly I have made my masthead in a font that is similar to a real rock magazine which is done to present the loudness of rock music. Originally I had my masthead in a font that was not professional and looked unusual in that setting. Thirdly on my preliminary task I used to have one long shot which is not usually seen on other magazines and even though I used a medium shot as well, there was no eye contact to engage the reader. In my foundation portfolio I made sure I had a close up to immediately attract the readers eyes especially with the eye contact. 11. What have you learnt from this experience from the preliminary task? (continued) The cover lines on my preliminary task were in a small font with little information which made me address the issue and research how cover lines should look. By doing this I learnt a lot and made sure my foundation portfolio had a range of fonts in different colours and sizes to interest the reader. Also I used language techniques such as alliteration to give the magazine the right context. By the theory of eye direction in a Z formation, I placed my main cover line on the optical point and organized my text in the positions they eye can easily follow. This is unlike my preliminary task where the text was put in an unnoticeable place. I followed the conventions of alignment in my foundation portfolio after observing how my original product looked without it. I linked in the colour of my models necklace to the colour scheme of black and red to give a good contrast while still using colours that are associated with rock and rock music. To help my progress I managed to use the software photo shot instead of published which made more things accessible such as layering and editing images better.
