Food for Body and Soul There seems to be much concern these days surrounding food, even in societies where
food is plentiful and starvation is rare. There are food scares…salmonella, listeria…and the usual
concerns about fat, cholesterol and sodium. Medical conditions such as anorexia nervosa and
bulimia affect thousands of people. Food, essential for life and meant to be enjoyed, becomes
instead a threat, something causing discomfort, even sickness. Where food is scarce, finding
enough to eat becomes a great responsibility.
In the Scriptures, food is mentioned quite often. In the Garden of Eden, food
symbolized wisdom and temptation. In the desert, it symbolized God’s care for His people.
The Passover meal was a commemoration of rescue from slavery. In the New Testament, Jesus
is frequently shown eating. Having a meal with Martha, Mary and Lazarus shows Jesus
relaxing with friends. Eating with Zacchaeus, Jesus shows His regard for people often
overlooked. His dining with tax collectors and sinners is a statement of who the Son of Man
came to save. In the miracles of the loaves and fish, food is a sign of blessing and abundance.
Jesus brings together much of the symbolism associated with food. As in the desert of
old, food represents God’s provision for people. Food represents deliverance, and Jesus’
concern for those often overlooked by others. Food also points to those the Son of Man came
to save. In the taking of the bread, the blessing, breaking and distribution, food points to the
sacrifice of Christ, and His presence in the Eucharist.
Let us remember then that when anxious about food, when hungry, when in any kind
of need, we can think about the Lord and how He provides, and that we, in turn, are to provide
the same for others in His name.
Father David

We Offer Our Prayers “Whoever believes in me, even if they die, will live.”
Jodi Dombock Alan Kurpiewski, husband of Nancy
Prayer Before an Election Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our city/state/country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, Men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom. We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. —from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

The first picture in this month’s article is that of District Deputy Stewart Mattson awarding past Grand Knight Vinnie Romano the plaque acknowledging St. James the Apostle Council #9806 as a Star Council. As stated in previous articles this award recognizes outstanding achievement in membership, insurance, and programming.
The final results are in regarding this year’s ID (Tootsie Roll) Drive. Just under $5,000 was raised. Some of this money will be donated to the Illinois State Knights of Columbus to be used for state-wide efforts for the intellectually disabled such as Special Olympics. The brunt of the money though will be donated to local charities. Thanks again to all that contributed and to all the Knights that helped with the collection.
The Knights were able to meet face-to-face in the month of October for the first time since March of this year. Although hampered by the inability to have met face-to-face for so many months, the Knights continued their charitable work. At the recent First Communion ceremonies, each of the first communicants received a rosary and a rosary case compliments of the Knights. We donated money to the Global Wheelchair Mission which supplies wheelchairs to countries where these devises are not usually available. Locally, we purchased masks for the St. James Youth Ministry to be used at future face-to-face meetings of this organization. One such mask is pictured.
Please look forward to two other Knights-led events. We will be having our annual Seminarian Raffle to support diocesan seminarians, but it has not yet been determined exactly how this is to be accomplished. We will also be hosting a blood drive on Saturday, November 28 (the Saturday after Thanksgiving). There will be a different format for this year’s drive as we will be using a mobile unit to collect blood.
If any of these activities sound like things that you might like to be involved in, please contact a Knight so that you might join us in our attempts to further Christ’s kingdom here on earth.

Did You Know St. James the Apostle Parish Hosts a Weekly A.A. Meeting?
Every Monday at 8 P.M. we host a closed A.A. Meeting for those individuals who have admitted to a personal problem with alcohol, have a desire to stop drinking and will commit to the 12 step recovery program. We welcome those who want help. Enter through Door 9 behind the statue of Mary, accessed from the Ministry Center lot.
There is a lot of activity at Access these days, maybe because Doctor Goyal used to have ten abortion clinics and now he is down to two located in Downers Grove and Wood Dale. We do believe in the power of prayer! Your prayers are powerful, on the sidewalk or from home. Our parish has committed to pray from 10:00 A.M. to noon on Thursdays so we will be there then for sure. If you’d like to join us you would be most welcome. You meet lovely people at a 40 Days vigil.
You can sign up to pray for an hour at Access Clinic in Downers Grove, 1700 75th St. at any time. Visit www.40daysforlife.com/downersgrove and click on “Vigil Schedule”. From our church, go south on I- 355, exit at 75th Street and head east (left). The clinic is right across from the Woodridge Water Tower (about a 15 minute drive). Parking is on Devereaux Street just to the left of the clinic. It is very helpful to them if you do sign up so they know that hour is covered. We’re in this together and we are making progress. People are praying at vigils all over the country and all over the world. Be a part of something wonderful! If you can’t come out, prayers from home are greatly appreciated.

The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry Presents a Telethon on Nov. 1
Join the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry for an online variety show benefitting the capital campaign Building Fund. Viewers will enjoy an old-fashioned telethon featuring acts by local entertainers on Sunday, Nov. 1 starting at 6:30 P.M. A link to the event is free, and during the show, the Pantry will share news about our capital campaign which will expand hunger relief efforts in the community. The goal is for viewers to be inspired to donate by calling phone lines staffed by volunteers, or online, to help reach our campaign goal of $900,000 needed to renovate our new, larger home.
